Michael Tait and Wally Talk Race

Ойын-сауық

Michael Tait, from the Newsboys, is always fun to have on the show. We had goofed around for a bit but then we got into a serious conversation about the racial tensions we are experiencing today. I truly think you will find his viewpoint refreshing and enlightening. If you want to skip ahead to this part of the conversation it starts at (3:50).

I have had my career in D.C. since I was 18 and I'm now 67 (I still live in the suburbs of Virginia). I LOVED moving to D.C. after high school. I had never really been around black people, and I LOVED IT! They were so welcoming to me. I loved the diversity of D.C. -- all kinds of races and religions. This is why I always loved that song "Colored People."

Music is one of those things that does bring people together. Growing up in the 80s in a small town midwest farming community, I loved listening to Casey Kasem's Top 40 and all of the different type of music. Also watching all of those artists on the Grammy's - people of all different colors enjoying music from people of all different colors.

When Michael Tait talked about all the colors in a bouquet, I began wondering what his work would look like if he was an artist or an interior designer! And also began thinking of Anne of Green Gables and her love of things that have enough "scope for the imagination!"

Thanks Michael for explaining how I feel. When I was younger I was exposed to and friends with the poorest girl in our small town my parents were the richest. Only one that showed up to her birthday party that her mom sacrificed for, I didn't understand at the time but my Christian parents were teaching me that we are all the same in God's eyes. He loves us all. I attended without walls church in Tampa, the minority there. I didn't even SEE the difference and was treated with respect, this world is crazy!!! (actually once accused of racism by someone that didn't know my history and I was genuinely hurt)

When each person wants the good of the other more than for themself we will end all the negative ism’s. That is what I read between the lines when Michael Tait says “we need to get out of our comfort zones.”

I played a gig last night, and I met an AMAZING band. After that gig, I hung out with that band all night, and I had a great night. As for the singer of that band, NOT EVEN ONCE did my brain say "This guy is Mexican." NOT EVEN ONCE. What my brain WAS saying was "This guy is a fellow musician, same as me." "This guy is a fun-loving guy, same as me" Why? Because THAT is what ACTUALLY matters. Race never came into the equation, because race does not matter. I am friends with this guy because is a fun-loving MUSICIAN, same as me. Don't focus on your differences. Focus on your SIMILARITIES. Focus on what you have in common. THAT is what actually matters. THAT is how you make friends.

I think what needs to happen is that all the Christian Artist need to unite and either remake the song "WE ARE THE WORLD", or unite and create a new song that can bring all people, all races together.

In my country (Colombia) we don't have a problem with racial issues..... We all listen to the same music and eat the same foods. I think is a cultural difference in the United States. For some reason the black man is considered lower than the white man..... I never knew racism existed till I came to the United States..... My mother remarried a Black Cuban man from Cuba who raised me when I was young..... I was raised with Cuban Black People and I never thought anything about it, it was normal..... To me racism is not a problem..... I think is childish really.

Micheal hai ragione. Io aggiungo non è il colore della pelle a fare una persona buona o cattiva ma la fede in Jesus. Tutti gli uomini e donne, bianchi o neri siamo ad immagine di Dio.

"Both of our races..." Sorry Wally, it should be "Both of our ethnicities...". God made ONE race: the human race; AND He used different situations to draw out different characteristics (skin pigment, muscle structure, hair texture, etc.) in each of us. And like Michael stated, we are each unique pieces in God's bouquet. How boring would it be if we were all exactly alike - silver robots, all the same height with the exact same responses to life. God made women and men to complement each other, to be strong where the other is weak, and God did the same thing between culture groups. I Corinthians 12:14-20 says: For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The hard part comes in living out the very next chapter. It is easy for us to read through I Corinthians 13, but reading through a chapter and actually living it out are two entirely different things. Are we patient with each other? Not always, Are we kind? Obviously not when others feel mistreated. Do we envy each other or do we boast about advantages and situations? Certainly, both of which are wrong. We can walk through this chapter and see all of our shortcomings on display, and all that does is point out that, at times, we are noisy gong and clanging cymbals.
