With increased popularity results in more income... Meaning; that eventually Ben could decide to eliminate some ads or increase his income. I'll bet he'd rather take the dollar bills over keeping a level income. I would probably do the same, but might be nice and considerate and know when not to interrupt a very good conversation to make a few extra dollars.

I'm glad Ben had an atheist on and actually had a conversation. As an atheist conservative, yes we exist and there are more of us than you'd think, this is the kind of conversation that needs to happen more often, not the crap that Knowles puts out. This is why I support and respect Ben.

Account Inactive Agreed. Ben also understands that if an idea is good and works, then it is useless to just quote what happens to be in the bible. He prefers to give reasons and explanations on why the idea is good outside of merely quoting the bible, regardless of people's religious or non-religious beliefs.

Curiosity Unleashed Because part of the conservative agenda is God-oriented, and I find that nearly all atheist conservatives I know are very anti-God and certainly not pro-God. The conservative movement doesn't need that in the mix. And by the way, if you're left leaning you're not a libertarian.

His answer about the French Revolution should've been: "That shows why reason without empirical evidence is useless. People often think they're being rational but are completely mistaken. We need to try to be rational whilst constantly testing our results against reality. That's what the French Revolution and Marxists both failed to do. They were so convinced they were right that they had no qualms about taking over a society and enforcing their beliefs from the top-down. By contrast, a liberal democracy is about testing things before you put them into widescale effect. The state system in the US does exactly that. It's a series of different experiments to see what works best."

TLDR: Atheist addresses Shermer's point, 'if Christianity caused all these great things how do you explain its past and the immoralities it was causing at the time?' Convo starts at about the 24 min mark. 1. The Protestant Printing Press!!!/2. Prayer/3. Aristotle!!!/4. time for growth, Memes/5. How the Bible is important to an Atheist like me, I get a little emotional here. lol On the point of why Christianity worked well during Renaissance/Enlightenment. I hadn't thought of this until Shermer asked Ben to explain Christianity's rougher past when claiming it lead to the Moral revolution of Europe. I don't think it was everything, but a major difference was the Printing Press and how it was used especially by the likes of Martin Luther. 1. For the first time ever the commoner could learn to read. No longer did kings/emperors dictate the word of god, it was there in your own hands. The Protestants believed in Individual Responsibility, You got yourself into Heaven. The Russian Catholic beliefs were more along the lines of your Czar will lead you there, and let's face it the Czars had become not so Great at leading anywhere. The people were mostly reading one book and they used their combined belief and will to forge some of the greatest tools ever known. If you look into the history prior to the Russian Revolution many of the grievances against the Romanov family were the same as had been brought about by the Protestant parts Europe. These practices had already spread to many other Catholic countries, but Russia held out much like our Radical Muslims today. So there was a huge divide, in the beginning rulers more often used Christianity to rule and not necessarily doing a good job of it. Later the message grew, more and more people were involved in interpretation and popularizing what should be read. Today we have women preaching despite 2 Timothy. Individualism. This is some of that growth stuff I'm talking about up top. Memes. 2. Christianity added the Morals and most importantly Prayer. Prayer is kinda like Meditation being that it is a mental task, but the results are so much different. Meditation teaches you to separate yourself from the world, very useful. I've seen similar verses in the Bible. But Prayer teaches you to take your mind for a dive into the world. My theory is that Prayer teaches one to force the 'conscious and unconscious' parts of the mind to work together. If you look into Sam Harris' "unauthored thoughts" when explaining his stance against Free Will he speaks of a voice I think we all have. It interrupts us, it seems to magically solve problems we didn't know how to solve weeks ago, it's kinda smarter than us. For lack of a better word, it's Godlike. Prayer is simply using the conscious self(the thoughts you create yourself) to feed the unconscious until is provides an answer. I think of it as a mind exercise for Creativity, very Divine. Growth 3. Another major factor would have been the Mongols, the Muslims, and Aristotle. The Muslims had acquired some of Aristotle's teaching and had them translated as they tended to do. It wasn't especially important to them, but they did have a Golden Ageish kinda thing for a bit. Anyway, when the Mongols invaded Baghdad they ensured a halt on scientific research creating one of if not the darkest of ages. The knowledge lost was more important than the Library of Alexandria even if the culture failed to do much with it. Baghdad knew of the invasion in advance and much like Alexandria some people took scrolls and ran!!! Some to Europe some to Africa or somewhere along the way. After this the Mongols took what is now mainland Russia, a little more of the Middle East and then went into a vegetative state until defeated. So, we can be certain that some of these refugees of Baghdad made it passed modern Russia out of duty to knowledge/power etc. All we have to do is look as some of their works and how they start referencing his views. Baghdad was sacked in 1258, Renascence started around 1300. The Christians were moral enough to be open minded and accept these teachings as true too. You gotta love how much the Bible teaches Culture Appropriation. :) Christians and Jews seem to accept reality well no matter how strange and attempt to explain it. Growth 4. Where I think Sermer and most Atheists go wrong, the flaw in their logic is they expect Religious claims to be true and they look at the Bible that way. He want's to know how Ben can make the claim of Christianity being a good moral guide when witch burning and the like were going on. The Bible doesn't magically transform you just by reading it, it takes growth, Memes. Rome wasn't built in a day. Christianity worked in so many good ways, but they didn't yet have the science to prove that witches didn't exist. If witches existed and were as evil as the tales are what would you do to defend your children, your parents, your lover? Christianity is true enough to be functional, and without proof that witches don't exist... well it was to be expected. But ya see, Christianity Culturally Appropriated again, it listened to the Memes of Aristotle because Aristotle tends to describe reality well. Christianity seems to be better at explaining what to do with reality. "Is and ought" as Sam Harris says. 5. As someone who would have to identify as an Atheist despite all the baggage that brings, It's pretty obvious how Christianity changed the world once it was in the hands of the masses and they followed its teachings over its preachers, priests, and kings. After absorbing enough Dr. Peterson, I've decided to call myself a Secular Christian. I am empowered by Job and teach how he was more a servant of God/more of a servant to humanity than any other human in the bible. Everyone else that I'm aware of had God on their side in the Bible, Samson was spoiled rotten. God happened to Job, can you imagine what this is like?!?! What kind of man can go on after his beliefs have destroyed everything he has? The kind of man who can rebuild himself, his culture, his country. Job was one of my major inspirations to walk away from the Radical Left. Most everything I believed was dissolved by reason and prayer. I am Job and I am Aristotle, I am Hunter S. Thompson and I am I am Terry Pratchett, I am Amanda Palmer and I am Ben Caplin. I am Sam Harris, I am Ben Shapiro, and I am Jordan B Peterson. Cultural Appropriation is a must and Prayer is essential for this to happen. Jesus once said you can move a mountain with faith. Most people take this to mean that if a Christian Prays at a mountain faith God will move the mountain. Here's how I see it. He said to have faith, he didn't necessarily say faith in God and we today consider the free market Godly, Invisible Haaaaand. In other words it operates on Faith. People lose out big time no matter how good their data is. With Faith in the market we are able to top down deconstruct mountains. I'm not real happy about tearing down mountains myself, maybe if we could focus that creativity and effectiveness to making mountains say in water scare areas and made out of rain attractant material? A Lefty can dream eh? My point is, Jesus' Prayer and his Mustard Seed analogy describing how to use the mind may be the source of much creativity. I keep looking in Greek and Roman and find noting of the sort. The East has Meditation and Reincarnation, but these tools will only take you so far. Egypt just had a strange sense of order and the Middle East had some good laws for the time. I'm no professional but a passionate amateur, and I've seen no one preceding Jesus teaching to use the mind in such a way. Prayer was so ingrained in me as a thought process that even after I stopped the physical actions of Prayer I could never stop the mental tasks it had created. It took me 15 years to realize this.

Thesirevn So number 1- The fact that if you are left born in the wild without any religion, morality would still exist even without religion being taught to you because what is right and wrong may look subjective but in the above cited example it doesn't look that way. 2) Atheists are not immoral. They are as likely to be charitable and empathetic as their religious counterparts , even if they do seem pessimistic. 3) When you talk about enlightenment and why it happened so late, the fact that science caused industrial revolution and deep involvement in science converted many people to rational human beings is why there was no enlightenment before. (Ben's counter is good too.)

I agree the sponsor plugs interrupt the flow of the conversation, but I think the guest have taken it in good form and it will evolve. I could see this being televised down the road. For me, in this polarized environment we’re living in right now, we have to have these conversations just to say look this is how grown ups behave.

"Why do you get up in the morning?" I very rarely give it thought, which is what may give religious people an upper hand here... But if we're talking cosmically, the fact that consciousness sprang into existence--willed or not--is truly the most remarkable thing I can fathom--and I can't fathom a God, which may be by design. So not only the objective and non-value-laden fact of conscious, but the fact that this consciousness is capable of experiencing swings beyond the non-value-laden fact, and that that proverbial needle can be moved in a direction toward the preferences and away from the horrors, both inherent in the nature of consciousness, makes this a truly unique wonder to behold. And contributing to that in some positive way while taking in the beauty of nature, life, and existence as much as possible, is what gets me up in the morning. That is to include, not being limited to, experiencing being a part of creating life and raising life, interacting with other conscious beings, human and otherwise, and being productive for others and myself, moving the needle of progress the tiniest of bits for all mankind, perhaps for all Universal-kind. Both whether or not there is a "God" nor whether or not I believe there is a "God" changes none of the above.

What a fantastic, reasoned, respectful conversation. As a Conservative atheist, I really appreciated both points of view here. All too often we paint people in a labeled box of one kind or another - an atheist must be a leftist, or to be a Conservative one must be a follower of JC. This shows that people of principle can arrive there from different places, and that action speaks louder than belief. Well done, Ben. Thank you.

Of all the outspoken mainstream atheist types, Schermer is my favorite. He isn't afraid to plant his foot, but he also doesn't assert his certainty a la Krauss. Good example would be tge IQ2 debate which I believe Schermer and Krauss debated D'Souza and Hutchinson. Schermer makes great points while still engaging in a conversation. Shapiro is the same way on the reverse side of the coin, so there's no surprise that that convo was fantastic. Well done.

Conor Corrigan Being a good person has no correlation with religion? Than what is the purpose of religion? That is exactly one of the main purposes. Ofcourse the more relevant question would be is being a good person related to being christian, because ofcourse all religions aren't the same. In my estimation being christian is very much related to being a good person. Can an atheist be a good person? Absolutely. But does out of the absence of christianity in a big set of people or a civilization emerge the same amount of good people when there is no moral authority? I'd say no.

Predestination/free will was difficult for me until I wrapped my head around the fact that God exists outside of space and time. You have the free will to make decisions, but God in His existence outside of time already knows the outcome of those decisions. So both exist in parallel states. God didn’t determine your decisions, He simply knows the answer before you do. If you give up and go the other direction right now, you’ve made that choice.
