phelps could break WR of Thorpe in swimming pool but I think that Thorpe would have chased him down if they had swum 200m across a river because no place for dolphin kick off wall :v

And the only reason MP didn't win 8 golds in 2007 was because the medley relay was DQ'd in the heats.

well, remember that Michael dominated the 200 free from 2005-2009 until he lost against Biedermann recently. In that period of time, Phelps broke the world record of the 200 FREE twice and won one olympic gold and two world championships so Michael has proved he's the most versatile swimmer who's ever lived.

It’s just epic, the others are racing and he’s miles in front but hasn’t even surfaced/started freestyling yet! (Last turn in particular is like 👌🏼- he actually disappears, he’s swimming so deep). What is amazing is that he was 0.53 ahead of Thrope's split @ 150, but at the end only 0.20 ahead. Given that Phelps had an insane 3rd turn it goes to show how good Thorpe's last 50m was. If Thorpe in 2001 form Raced Phelps in 2007 form (both with LZRs), I would have to give it to Thorpe with a 1:43-mid WR. If Phelps was in Beijing shape then Thorpe would not be able to live with him over this distance. Phelps has come on remarkably, not just since Athens, but also in the last 12 months.

when Ian used to race the 200 he raced against Hoogenband, who beat him forcing him to outpace at Sydney 2000 Olympics. After that Ian remains in "control" of his races and always had a strategy of racing " 1-ok 2-ok 3-ok 4-i give everything I have". Had Ian raced the "modern" way of swimming 200 free he for sure have had 1.43 low PB.

But not this one. Polyurethane suit started with Speedo LZR in 2008 (especially at the Olympics that year). Prior to 2008, including at this 2007 Worlds, it's still textile suit. So basically, this swim by Phelp is still the WR is if you discount the high-tech suit from the 2008-2009 season.

No, it is not. In 2007, Phelps used the polyurethane swimsuit and broke world records in the 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle. 2006 200m butterfly 1.53.80. 2007 1.52.09. It is not possible to accelerate this much in 1 year. He also swam 1.52.03 in the 200m butterfly in 2008. In the 200m freestyle, if she had a textile swimsuit, she would have swam around 1.45.10 in 2007.
