Michael Pearl answers: Do souls suffer in hell for eternity? Bible Questions - Episode 74

This Week's Bible Question: I recently heard someone say, if a man dies and goes to hell that he will actually be destroyed and thus not suffer for all eternity. I love our Lord Jesus and I believe he died on the cross for our sins. But I have a question about Hell that still confuses me..... what's the point of keeping all those tortured souls for eternity without any chance of redemption....what does God get out of that?? I don't understand?? But I find it disturbing....

Neither are those that experience hell just. If a sinful person were allowed to live 1000 years they would continue to be that sinful person. When Adam sinned in Genesis he was forced out of the garden and not allowed to access the tree of life , Why? So he would not live life in a fallen state. Simple faith in Jesus Christ is the remedy for sin. The rejection of him is what condemns the sinner to such a punishment. The rejection of the offer of Eternal life is Eternal damnation in Hell. Mankind’s choices have consequences.

It's people's choice on if they want a relationship with God or not. Everyone has a choice. Choosing separation from God is hell. Here's an example. Pretend you're homeless and you can't afford to have food or have shelter. Then I come around and tell you "If you choose to be my friend, I'll let you live in my mansion, and you'll have all the money and food you could ever dream of.". Then you say "No thanks, I don't want to be your friend". That's how God is with us. He's not going to force you to love him. He gives the opportunity to everyone.

You've obviously done a lot of study on this subject and I too felt it was important to really understand what the bible means by hell ...It's important, I believe, to understand that when the word hell is used in the bible it has several meanings, Gehenna , Hades or Sheol and the Lake of Fire ... Sadly, the idea of eternal torment has been used to scare people away from our Creator Father God often by scaring them into religion (who would want to spend eternity with a sadistic God? Our Father God isn't sadistic but that's the impression people get) .... the term that describes best what hell is, is separation from God which is why we can say that the majority of people are already experiencing Hell to some degree on Earth as they try to navigate through life separately from Jesus. My experience of fire is that it consumes completely and quickly and won't take eternity to do so. If I had a rabid dog that I loved but was dangerous and out of control I would, out of compassion, put him out of his misery .. I would not take any delight in watching his suffering and if we, as the scripture says, as Fathers etc know how to give good gifts to our children so much more will our heavenly father do what is good and right ... we can trust in that .... sometime the best gift he gives is death as an end to suffering. We should never preach Hell with out preaching a double measure of Gods love at the same time. In my humble opinion.

Great answer. There are many things in the Bible that I don’t like. But I acknowledge that it is a matter of flesh. No one wants to believe there is hell and imagine that a love one will suffer for eternity, but God has warned us. He sent his only begotten son to save us from such torment. If we choose to ignore him, then it is on us.

Mat 10:28 New International Version Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. That being quoted. I still believe hell is eternal after hearing another preacher explain that God couldnt give us anything more to save us from Death. So when we reject that most precious gift that WE put on the cross, there isn't anything less that we deserve.

When a person dies they cease to exist, some are cremated and some are buried in the ground: Some of us who have died, are sleeping in death and are waiting for the resurrection, but some of us who died have died twice, that is , the resurrection has no power over the second death. With death, all suffering stops: In the case of "the chosen ones"they will sleep in death up until Christ returns, they will be part of the first resurrection: For the chosen ones who are living when Christ returns, there is no sleeping in death, when it is time they are changed "in a twinkling of an eye" to be with the Christ in heaven.

I know this is an old post (9 years old) but here goes. If humans burned in hell forever, they've received eternal life, although not a desirable eternal life, its still eternal. Only those whos names are found in the lambs book of life shall inherit eternal life. You even read the scripture that confirms that being thrown into the lake of fire is the second death. Revelations 21:8.

Fire not being quenched does not mean the fire does not go out. It just means nobody can put it out, but it will go out once the unquenchable fire has consumed all its targeted elements. In Jeremiah 17:27, he predicted a fire that would "not be quenched" that destroyed the palaces of Jerusalem and the gates. The story of the Rich Man and Lazarus is a parable, and it isn't referring to "souls", but using "body parts"--"eyes", "finger", "tongue", "bosom"--this it cannot be taken literally.

Lysimachus78 Abraham's Buxom was a literal place in the underworld that was for the temporary holding place for souls that would be going to heaven after Jesus' resurrection. Those of you who think that all the Parables were fables are very wrong! I can assure you that the Parable of the wheat and the tares is a very real event that will actually happen! Likewise the parable of Lazarus and the rich man is about a literal place that actually existed, although it is now empty, because Jesus opened up Heaven!

@av Those who are snuffed out of existence have no rest day or night. It's speaking of that eternal rest in Christ Jesus. They will never experience that eternal rest. We have literally HUNDREDS of texts in the Bible that tell us the wicked will be "no more", they will be "ashes under the soles of our feet", they will be "consumed", and "burned up". Keep in mind also that Revelation is a book of symbols, describing those who burn forever and ever as the "whore", "beast", & "false prophet".

yes Michael believes in the Bible. It is the truth even if it seems cruel and terrifying. Our knowledge is limited, only God knows the whole picture. When He asked Abraham to kill his own son, he did not hesitate for a single second. We must never hesitate when it comes to the word of God. We must obey it and believe it as absolute regardless of our perception.

I have listened to both arguments about the eternal suffering in hell fire for the lost, and the other argument the lost are destroyed in the lake of fire, eternally destroyed, and not live and burn in hell forever. I do hope and pray those who believe on eternal hell fire are wrong, I certainly would not want to spend eternity in heavenly bliss, knowing my daughter is suffering in hell fire forever. How in the world could one enjoy heaven knowing that? Think about it, really, stop and think about it, that is sadistic, simply perverse, evil. So I pray hell fire forever punishment believers are wrong, otherwise I think I will be on the heavenly committee petitioning Jesus to end all suffering, forever, and get rid of hell completely, so we all can move on and enjoy heaven the way it is meant to be. Wipe every tear from every eye, how can God do that for us when we know our loved ones are spending eternity suffering in hell?

Although the subject of hell isn't a comfortable one, nor is it a pleasant subject to deal with, I would humbly suggest that to not deal with it or to not discuss it is contrary to the message that Jesus gave to us. He specifically spoke of hell and the repercussions of not accepting the gift of Grace, and of not repenting of our sin. It is a hard message to hear, and an extremely difficult one to discuss, and thus should be given the appropriate seriousness deserving of such a difficult subject. It must be fully explored and discussed so that there is absolutely no misconception of its existence and its duration. God Bless you!

I am glad that I have entered "The Door" of your world and learned so much from you which I could pass on to others without making a fool of myself to explain something so vitally important for people's souls. The truth will never get old, it doesn't matter from which year it was taught. BTW, Your beautiful beard does not fool me, I am a few years older than you and by the grace of GOD still able and busy doing the Father's work. I pray that God will bless you and your family in the coming years while we are all waiting with the blessed hope in our hearts on the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ who will wipe off all our tears. Shalom from a sunny South Africa and may 2020 be your best year.

There are many scriptures that speak of perishing of souls/burning up like chaff/etc. Therefore, at some point, they must be destroyed. I think the “eternal” part should be read as “afterlife”. That eradicated confusion. Ie, salvation in the afterlife (eternal salvation), punishment in the afterlife (eternal punishment), etc. Not that it happens unendingly, but that it happens in the eternal age/afterlife.

I am sure Mr Pearl you have heard of Mark Finely ,He really seems to be very knowledgeably about the bible as well, he says People who go to hell will be completely destroyed .I cannot remember which episode he said that i have watched many ,I also respect your opinion as well ,So i guess i have to need to study more on this myself ..Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge of the bible .But either way i would not want to tempt God at all ,I am a firm believer so i will not have to worry about that at all ,so i feel .

Hell is real as is Heaven. I can’t grasp why God would create a place of such anguish torment and never ending pain. To what purpose? The Lord doesn’t owe us an answer for we owe Him everything. There is a purpose in everything God does. I just don’t have the spiritual maturity to understand a place like hell and it’s purpose. Maybe one day I will know. God bless you all

God created Hell for the Devil and his angels and not for Humans. He sent a Saviour Jesus to save us and if we don't accept and receive him as our Saviour then we choose to go to Hell

Could you let your son been tortured with the most painful ways for all eternity for ever in hell? I used to think that but i am not sure after hearing so many NDEs testimony. If i could i wouldn't let anyone be tortured for all eternity. Even for Hittler(The bad guy model) that would be disproportional. May God forgive our sins. Lets love our brothers and sisters as ourselves and love above all the One that gave us life.

The people that go to hell are not God's sons..they have chosen to be His enemies just as Satan did...Jesus said to the wicked.." ye are of your father the devil.( John 8:44)

You said it best Michael, you may not agree but it was never our call to begin with. God has his own mind and his own personality. He is perfect but that doesn't mean he is devoid of character. We can also tell from the book of Numbers that he may even be a bit short fused 😅 (forgive me Lord if i speak foolishly) but when He said that the hebrews would eat meat until "it came out of their nostrils" after they complained about eating "nothing but mana", you can feel the temperament and the sarcastic sense of humor of this eternal all powerful fatherly being 😂 having to deal with the tantrums thrown by His children. Who hasn't had an experience like that with their earthly father or mother or even their child at some point when they throw a fit because they want a certain food and when you make it you say "you better clean this plate and eat every last crum!" praise the Lord, our eternal Father, our beloved Creator. Amen.

Can you imagine anything more cruel than creating a human being in order for you to torture them forever by burning them? Not only this but you know they are to be burnt before you even create them. And to top it off the ones who you don't burn only escape because you bestow the necessary faith upon them, giving it to them as a gift that isn't based on any merit they as an individual display. Only a truly evil being would do that.

That is why I am not a Calvinist. God offers everyone the opportunity to spend eternity in Heaven or hell. It is us who decide where it will be by accepting or rejecting Jesus as our Savior. Don't blame God for our choices! If we spend eternity in hell, the greatest torment will be that we didn't have to.

The notion of eternal conscious torment contradicts what the Bible teaches . . . plainly and often . . . from beginning to end.

The thing about eternity in hell i believe is not actually about punishment, rather it is a result of not accepting Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives and just wanting to live like most of the world at large. The pointy being that when we pass from this mortal life He won't recognize us as belonging to Him.
