Yes, that's the same range of feelings experience when I hear Mike's music. I.love so much of it and have always loved his voice in its various guises. Sometimes it's just so lovely to hear him sing following the melody line.

Fun Fact: Although he quickly dropped the stage name when the Monkees began it's interesting to note that in the original credits for the pilot episode he is still listed as Michael Blessing and Micky is listed as Micky Braddock which was the name he used on Circus Boy in the '50s.

I understand they just released a 12 cd set of his work in the 70s. I am really hoping there will be a official release of his early demos. His demo version of Don't Call On Me blows away the later Monkees version. The demo version was said to be recorded in 1963. He is incredibly talented and his voice here was amazing.

It occurred to me that Mike stood up to greet Lloyd Thaxton to BE POLITE, (because in those days a young person would stand up when greeted by an older person) and it threw Mike off somewhat when Lloyd told him to sit. That may be why the interview was a little awkward, with Mike being perhaps a little embarrassed? Anyway, Mike handled it well with his usual poise and confidence.

Shondell Miller I never hated him but there was always something about Nesmith I didn’t like. Maybe it was his aloofness. But him performing this at his young age shows he has emotion.

@yandrsupreme Yes, I figured that too. I think I mentioned that in another comment on here. But what I was talking about here wasn't why Lloyd asked Mike to sit down, what I was talking about was why Mike stood up when Lloyd came over.

They were the four right guys for the job, and thank god for that. All talented in their own right, and when you put them together something truly special happened.

I loved Michael's voice from the Monkees and I always looked for him to sing again!

I started singing along to this, and almost immediately tears began falling from my eyes. This song is so beautiful...So strong towards the heart. The lyrics are pure poetry, pure grace and beauty.

Lloyd seemed to sincere and excited to have him as a guest. What a prophetic sweetheart

After the show someone said to Mike, "Whatever you do from now on, never do a TV show about four guys in a band based on The Beatles. It'll be a flop." Thankfully Michael Blessing Nesmith didn't listen and the rest is history.

I met Nez two weeks ago when he was in Santa Monica he is as handsome as ever and warm. It was on my bucket list to meet him.

It will. Linda Ronstadt sang Mike's Different Drum, and that song hasn't and isn't going anywhere. A classic, along with Mike's solo and Monkees music.

He's got an angelic voice.

I don't know how much camera experience he had before he started on "The Monkees" but Mike was in teen drama camps and studied drama in college. He had a fair amount of stage experience. Acting wasn't new to him and that might have explained his ease in front of audiences.

@@GingerGilligan It's a bummer, Ginger. Mike concentrated on making music in the 70s and then his starting to make music videos got him interested in TV again. Then NBC President Brandon Tartikoff saw his video album "Elephant Parts" at Sundance Film Festival, where it was a hit with audiences (Mike had also put up seed money for the festival from his inherited fortune). He approached Mike about doing a show of comedy videos. Mike researched acts in he LA comedy club scene and they produced a short-lived great show called "Television Parts" in summer 1985. It was terrific and introduced a lot of later successful comedians (Garry Shandling, Roseanne Barry, Arsenio Hall) to TV, but its ratings were low and they only produced eight shows. I was disappointed because I liked the show myself. Mike then moved into executive producing movies and running his home video business, as well as producing music for other artists. He has had cameos in shows like "Portlandia" too, but not as many appearances as he would like. Mike had one other opportunity for a series (I think it was the late 80s or early 90s). It was to be a family comedy about two sets of divorced neighbors who married again. But when Mike read the proposed scripts he was disappointed by their quality and decided not to continue negotiating to star in the show. The casting director was furious and told him for pulling out, he would "never work in this town again." Seems that this blacklisted him. He also said that when he asked former "Monkees" producer Bob Rafelson to direct one of the videos for "Television Parts," Rafelson told Mike he had no future in television. I couldn't imagine why Rafelson would say that until I read a short piece with him and learned his feelings about the Monkees in general. Rafelson said that he "grooved on those guys like no other," but he didn't think any of them had any talent. 😲 I wish Michael had gotten more film work because he was an appealing and funny actor in what he did display. He says he would do it again if anyone called him and described acting as "his first love."

GingerGilligan He probably wasn’t interested by that time as time was spent in developing the group into a real band & he was doing more songwriting by that time so his projects were music related. I don’t picture any of the Monkees to be great in acting even though Jones was in theatre. Guest spots in shows I’ve seen like Jones on The Brady Bunch but I think they followed their calling rather nicely & thanks to the fans, they are not forgotten.

Cheryl Hulting Very interesting-knew some of what you said but not everything. Maybe he would have been a good actor if the circumstances would have been different. And maybe the scripts weren’t as bad as he thought but if you’re that interested in acting & you’re not well known for it, I think one should just take the job as other things can spring out of that.

God blessed you with the most handsome face, body and voice while you were alive. Heaven was within you and now you are part of the Infinite Light. First time on TV, he must have so psyched. Feeling on top of the world.

I get a lot of flack from people for liking The Monkees because they're "fake, manufactured, not a real band", etc. etc. I try to explain that I am primarily a fan of Mike Nesmith and I like The Monkees because that was the group and show he happened to be in. If he was in a "real band" I would be a fan of that. If he became a big star as Michael Blessing I would be a fan of him as a solo artist. It is obvious the man had real talent and was an absolute perfect 10 lookswise as well. IMO he leaves all of The Beatles in the dust.

The Monkees were manufactured - like an iPhone, or a Porsche, or "Corn fed beef"? The argument seems to be that nothing good can be "manufactured?" That's just silly. The Monkees are amazing BECAUSE they are manufactured. They were created by a group of talented people (including the 4 guys we know as "the Monkees." Those four young men were an extremely important part of the group of people who "manufactured" the Monkees.) I don't care at all if the four guys didn't grow up together or meet each other in some club in Oklahoma and decide to play music together. The four were "arranged" to be together by one set of talented people and then the four took the project from there. Talented musicians were brought in to play wonderful songs. The whole project reeks of talent. I love it for what it is. I don't care at all if it doesn't fit some mold that Jann Wenner and the other "rock critics" demand that all rock groups must fit into - I like them, and I made that decision all by myself - without Jann's help or approval. I like the personalities I perceive. I like the music I hear. I like the Monklees!

The Monkees had a magic chemistry despite how different they all were. Don't be ashamed or embarrassed. A lot of great music! Michael stood out for me when I heard the old albums again during college. He is my favorite, and love his whole solo career too!

Really? People are still knocking the monkees about that? I thought we've grown up as a nation. Seriously, there was a YT comment that resonated with me that said that The Monkees were more than just a band, but an art project. That's a fantastic assessment.

I remember on in an interview on the Monkees Michael Nesmith called himself Michael Blessing but I never knew there was film of him performing under that name.

Everything about that man was beautiful.

Michael Nesmith was (& is ) very talented & versatile, he had a burgeoning career as a Country Folk singer songwriter, he would later be a Music video pioneer & a Founding Father of MTV, his Mom would invent liquid paper, he is the only Monkee to have a hit single after leaving The Monkees.

Michael had several hit singles after the Monkees, including Joanne, Silver Moon, and Rio (#1 in UK and Australia!). He wrote hits covered by others, including Different Drum (Linda Ronstadt), Some of Shelly's Blues (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), and I've Never Loved Anyone More (Lynn Anderson). He's a great songwriter - I love his lyrics, as well as his voice!

This episode on LTS aired the year before "The Monkees" debuted in 1966.

I kept expecting Lloyd to ask "Are you from Texas?" And yes, even if I didn't know who Mike was, I would be able to tell he was from Texas just by his accent. (And not from elsewhere in the South either).

But sometimes I wonder if people like Dick Clark & Lloyd Thaxton weren’t just lucky they landed their jobs & then realized there’s tons of money in the rock/pop industry so they carried on with other things related to this field sticking to this career as it generates a ton of money. One of the big rivals of 16 magazine in the 1960’s was Lloyd Thaxton’s Tiger Beat-that’s all teens did was buy mags like that back in the day. Don’t know if teenagers do now but the reason I’m saying this is because Thaxton was born in 1927. Most people born in this decade did not like rock music. Dick Clark was also born in the 1920’s. Music of their era was Swing/Big Band so you wonder if they truly & genuinely liked rock & roll music, R & B & the Pop of the 1960’s.

VaL Moore I thought this had to be rare as I’ve never seen any of the Monkees doing a solo on a teen dance show. So he was “out there” which is why he ended up hearing about the audition & ended up getting it I think because he was remembered for wearing his wool cap.

I didn't know Michael ever used a stage name. I do know Mickey Dolenz, whose real name is also Michael, used the name Mickey Braddock in the show, Circus Boy. It's funny that they went back to their real names when they did The Monkees

Michael said that the use of their real names instead of character names was one of the most crucial decisions made about the production of "The Monkees." That tended to make people think that the Monkees were the same as the guys they played and that was true only to a certain extent. Michael said in interviews that this led him himself to sometimes feel difficulty in distinguishing reality from the world of the show.

Who is Lloyd Thaxton? BTW, both Mike and Davey recorded for Colpix pre-monkees but I guess you all already knew that.

I think Lloyd Thaxton started Tiger Beat magazine and had this TV show at the same time

Ironically this song was a single on Colpix...Davy Jones had already had his LP and singles on Colpix, and the Monkees recorded output would be on a sister label, Colgems. (Colpix was owned by Columbia Pictures...for Colgems they brought in RCA Records as a part owner to get the power of their record distribution...RCA was one of the largest record labels at the time, and Colpix, while they had a number of top chart hits including number one records, they didn't do too well with distribution...in every country outside the United States, the Monkees records were released on RCA Records.)
