Whether things worked out the way they were supposed to or not, you can’t deny Nike made the Air Jordan line iconic. They saw what a star MJ was and had the vision to build everything about that shoe, from the design to the marketing, around his whole essence. Anyone who hasn’t seen the movie “Air” about Nike and MJ really should. It’s so inspiring.

Just watched “Air” today. Great movie. Reminded me of “Moneyball” in a way. Getting inside a tangental sports-related topic, one that on the surface might not seem overtly interesting or entertaining, and making it really come alive and pull you in. A few scenes really stood out: the picnic table conversation with Michael’s mom, the conceptualizing & making of the prototype shoe, and of course Matt Damon’s prophetic monolog at the pitch meeting with the scenes of Jordan’s career interspersed.

My point is that Matt Damon's big speech in the movie Air was not what made Jordan sign with Nike, nor was it a classy move on MJ's part to go back to Nike and ask them if they would match. Jordan was thinking of himself first, like any of us would do. This was about money. Back in 1984, Addidas was the cool hip hop urban shoe, and Nike was the boring white people running shoe. If Addidas matched, then we would have had the Jordan Air Addidas or something, or Jordan Flyn' Addidas. Either way, Jordan turned Nike into a "cool" urban shoe.

The thing is people don’t understand that a HUGE reason why Jordan’s brand grew was because Nike was the first company to give an individual basketball player his own model they also took a huge push to make his name and likeness a brand in its own which Adidas and others like Converse didn’t really care to do even to the established and big names like Larry Bird and Magic, as well as actually taking his input they also didn’t have their own Tinker Hatfield an absolute design genius, Adidas wasn’t going to give Jordan that much freedom and like Jordan said we’ll never really know but it’s more likely he doesn’t get the massive brand he has today, as a big fan of his shoes I’m happy his mom pushed him to actually even attend the meeting with Nike and take up their offer

To put this into perspective, Jordan signed this deal well before he had ever won a championship. The NBA was actually struggling in the 70s and only started to be on the up again with the magic/bird rivalry. Nike was actually making a huge risk/bet that the NBA was going to continue to grow It's easy to go back and say this or that but it's like investing in Amazon when they were a book company, it took a combination of massive unprecedented success and luck.

Well right in the beginning Adidas showed they weren’t willing to invest as much and that would’ve very likely continued for an un productive amount of time, and Nike was super hungry and motivated to develop, develop, develop and allowed him to be involved in that as well. Michael definitely made a ton more money through Nike than he ever would’ve with Adidas just for that reason alone 🙏

Also as a collector of nike, ive seen some pretty nasty shit with nike's quality control! its absurd. I dont know if adidas had the same problem but its funny how you spend so much on their products and they couldn't even keep a damn glue from spreading where it ain't supposed to be... Shoe height ain't even, panels aint the same size most of the time, etc... Hell! Theres a running joke in my nike collecting community that if a nike is flawless, its probably a top tier fake because the real one will have flaws and glue stains.

It's so stupid how there are people who are solidly one brand or another, unless they are contracted professional atheletes. They all make quality gear. I could wear my nike shirt with Adidas shorts and a pair of reeboks, and they all are fine. why does there need to be a brand war?

Back in the early 80's, being primarily a European brand, Adidas focused solely on soccer. The mentality was athletes wore the shoes that the shoes company made. It was unthinkable that they would create a new brand of shoes with individual name and likeness of an athlete. Jordan, as far as I know, was the first athlete whose name and logo were used on the shoes, hence "Air Jordan". It was a revolutionary concept that only Jordan could do.

Jordan is extremely likeable, well-spoken, intelligent, respectful and doesn't throw anyone (e.g., Adidas) under the bus. Much props to MJ! He's the consummate superstar in my book. His decision in 1984 has made: Nike the #1 shoe company in the world (2x Adidas), and Nike the #2 apparel company in the world.

I just watched that Matt Damon Ben Affleck movie about this. Of course they made it all about his super smart and business savvy mom and gave Mike little agency in the decision, but it was still a great movie from the standpoint of where Nike was before and after and how they were a running show company that put there whole basketball shoe budget behind Jordan instead of hedging their bet by offering smaller amounts to multiple players. I recommend it to anyone interested in this subject.

Doesn't really matter, its not like adidas went bankrupt or else we really would be making it a what if. Jordan wasn't already jordan when they offered their contract so they didn't see it worth it which is understandable. Either way both nike and adidas are still top two apparel brands. Adidas still does alot of college sports, soccer, track & really good performance clothes so I doubt they even dwell on it as much as us nike do, well other nike fans do because I don't lol

They are both leaders and giants in sport wear and equipment when compared to other companies - but Adidas still have the edge over Nike particularly in soccer.
