I'm wondering which GB coaches influenced Clyde Hart. Team GB had good 4x400m relay teams way back, but the US were light years ahead of us back then.

This training sought of mirrors Bud Winters the great San Jose track coach who coached Lee Evans, John Carlos and Tommy Smith with progression over time. Clyde Hart's system works, the new coaches are strictly speed based which is good but it doesn't work everyone.

@@faux3117 basically endurance is much easier to train and it is more beneficial to train it in the 400m than speed. Decent endurance can save you 2-3 seconds over the last 200m of the 400m. Its a scientific fact that if you do endurance training fast twitch fibers will switch to slower twitch fibers. There is some limited evidence that you can switch slow to fast but not to the same extent and it is harder and takes longer to do. You can also pretty easily teach fast twitch fibers to have more endurance. We know how to do this. If you want to create an olympic gold medallist it's better to get a really fast person and train them to keep their fast twitch fibers while also developing more endurance in those fibers and more speed endurance in their combo fibers and slow twitch fibers.

This type of workout model is more fitting of elite athletes such as some hs athletes, collegiate and professional athletes. Do not use this program to train young athletes. Develop speed and speed capacity in youth athletes using short sprints plyometrics and drill work. As they progress and grow stronger you can add distance to the sprints. Please dont train your youth with this workout model into they have developed a solid speed base amd have grown strong as a sprinter.

@@elijahebbert6884 I mean it wasn't optimal for developing max speed. Basically Johnson had the 200/400 WR wich is insane. But now he don't have those WR anymore. Maybe he could ran even faster if his training was more orientated on speed instead of endurance. We never know.. At least for me Johnson was the most talented sprinter from a movement efficiency standpoint.

@@Leonidas-eu9bb Well if you ever listened to Clyde Hart talk you'd know that MJ used to be on a more speed based program in his early years at Baylor. However he was incredibly injury prone. After his sophomore year (I believe), coach Hart took a risk and switched over to a slower, more volume intensive approach for him. That year he opened up with a sub 44 and the rest was history. He went on to dominant the event for damn near a decade, became the first man to defend an Olympic 400m title and went under 44 seconds more than anyone in history (and its not even close) and you have the audacity to say it wasn't optimal? Look at Jeremy Wariner. After running 43.4 in 2007 under Clyde Hart he switched to a more speed based program through Mike Ford and his whole career went downhill. Before you start bashing a coach educate yourself a bit. Jesus.
