I remember his reaction to Bolt beating his 200m record. He was genuinely overjoyed for him. He then said, "The person to beat that record probably hasn't been born yet"!

I don't think enough people are appreciating that usually sprinting world records (with the exception of Flo Jo and this one) are normally marginal improvements less than 0.05 of a second. This guy destroyed the WR a magnitude of 7x that

My name is Michael Johnson and I literally ran the 400 because of him in 8th grade I ran it in 1:06 and my coach said I'd never live up to my name and I kept believing and wanting to be as great as he was...by my senior year in high school I had a PR of 46.8 and had won state in the Open 400 twice and won state in the 4x400 three times....he was and is my inspiration, although I never got as fast as him I still tried to live up to his greatness and it brought out the best in me and yeah he's by far my favorite athlete by far, don't give up on your dreams and also strive to be Elite!!!!

Imo, there is zero doubt that MJ is still the greatest 200/400 runner of all time... his performance at Atlanta '96 cemented his legacy.

Michael Johnson, always made it look so very, very easy. He was so amazing to watch. He always looked like if he wanted to he could simply run even faster. It was beautiful.

Best finisher I've ever seen in the 200m and 400m. I just remember before he ran the 200m Final, I was jumping outta my chair in my room by myself yelling at the tv like I was in the stadium as a teenager😃 That was a HUGE moment in time when smashed his own 200m record. Great memories.

I can still remember my dad was going crazy when this guy did this 😂 absolute legend

Like others, I’m here after Lyles run. As I was watching MJ run though I couldn’t help but notice all the camera flashes throughout the stadium, and realized that magical era, like many others, has pretty much come and gone.

Michael Johnson's double was an incredible achievement, but it must be remembered that Marie-José Pérec, the French sprinter won the same double at the same Atlanta games before Johnson.

The man's 400m record still stands...20 years later. Consider how much training methods (technology) have improved in the last 20 years. He was ahead of his time 20 years and counting.

Well, if you are comparing it to the 100m times, in the 100m you have to accelerate through much of it but in the 400m you run a much higher percentage of the race at full speed.

I was lucky enough to be the guest of one of the Olympic sponsors for the entire duration of the festival - had the opportunity to attend all of the USA men’s BB, women and men’s swim & gymnastics, as well as the T&F finals. Even from the UK I used to love watching him as a kid. It was always special.

I've always loved the sprints and the greats including Michael Johnson and after reading his book " Slaying The Dragon " it took my respect to a whole new level of what it takes to achieve your dreams ... Never seen such a precise blueprint to greatness

I still get that same feeling of excitement when I watch his clips all these years later.

Man those iconic gold shoes! I think to me it's more impressive than Usain's because when this happened, I was a little 4 year old, who didn't know anyone could ever run that fast! With Usain, it's impressive, but being much older now, you know it's possible! Great to see Johnson giving Usain props though!

I am jamaican and I want to say that Usain Bolt, who is also jamaican can be the bets sprinter alive too, many us and jamaicans are good at sprinting

Romain Ebanks...Thank you for your comment! Michael Johnson dominated in his era...I admired his running style! Yes, I totally agree the jamaicans dominate sprinting now, both male & female...Usain Bolt is the best for his era!

I don't know why but his running style makes me cry; it is so beautiful.

so happy to see how fast a man can really run. its so carefree feeling to watch, im so jealous that i can’t run like that because of my heart disease.

Just imagine slashing 0.34 seconds off the World Record when even the most elite of the elite sprinters could rarely go below 19.70 seconds in the 200 meters. Just mind blowing.

Surely another tenth of a second had he not been wearing that stupid Mr T gold chain...
