Michael Gandolfini on playing a young Tony Soprano

Ойын-сауық

In the new film "The Many Saints of Newark," a prequel to the groundbreaking crime series "The Sopranos," Michael Gandolfini plays a young Tony Soprano, the character made famous by his father, James Gandolfini, who died in 2013. In this web exclusive, Michael discusses with correspondent Jim Axelrod the pressures of taking on his dad's iconic role, and how he created a "new version of Tony" who would grow up to become a feared New Jersey mob boss.

    As great as James Gandolfini's Tony Soprano was, Michael's portrayal of the character revitalizes Tony in ways the audience has never seen. The flashbacks to the younger Tony in the HBO series were fine, but they were just snapshots of the past. The younger Tony we see in 'The Many Saints of Newark' has "more energy and drive" than the older Tony did. He hasn't yet "settled into" the life that he creates for himself as a result of the choices he makes. I think that the younger Tony will make the older Tony seem all the more grand.

    God so intelligent and self aware! Such a big swing for a production to choose a performers debut for such a well known and well done character- let alone the son! • @Scorch1028

    @Scorch1028

    Yeah, that's true for the most part. The only thing I question is David Chase's "timeline" for the characters' ages. Tony was supposedly born in August of 1959, and Chris was born in July of 1969. That means that Tony is just shy of 10 years older than Chris. Yet, Tony's and Chris's age difference in the trailer is greater than that. During the first season of filming, James Gandolfini was 36 , but Tony was almost 39. The pilot begins with Tony reading a newspaper dated June 17, 1998. If Tony had been 15 in 1969, then he would have turned 44 in 1998. I thought that David Chase's decision to have Tony "turn 40" in 1999 made the most sense. Now, Chase has to "retcon" Tony's birth back to 1954, or earlier, for the timeline to make sense.

    I saw him and I said "-- how'd they find a kid that looks just like him --" then I had to go look it up. Oh my goodness. Very very good, kiddo! Enjoyed watching you. Can't wait to see more acting from you. "Met" your father once in Manhattan at a car dealership that I won't name. I didn't want to bother him so I stayed back. He saw me staring and shot me a little wave, and I waved back. That was nice of him; he didn't have to.

    He's so brave for taking on this role. I mean, Gandolfini's performance is considered to be possibly the best on television ever. How do you tackle that on? It's just so crazy to me haha I don't know if I could bear the expectation and immense pressure.
