The idea he didn't "fight back" is ludicrous. DUKAKIS - NOT BUSH - ran a furlough ad about the Patsy Pedrin murder by Angel Medrano, an ad considered "racist" when Bush didn't actually run one on Horton (it was run by an independent group, which is why now we have the 527s). The fact is, Dukakis couldn't let people know what he was in favor of for one simple reason: he was out of the mainstream. You cannot: a) oppose the death penalty AND b) oppose home ownership of handguns WHILE AT THE SAME TIME c) thinking first-degree murderers serving life sentences should get weekend furloughs. He ran a rather hard-hitting ad with a tumbler dressed up to look like Gephardt to beat him in the primaries, and it was Dukakis' consultants (Sasso and Tully) who knocked Biden out of the race with the plagiarism video. As years have gone by, I have come to admire and respect Dukakis more than I did when he ran. Would I have voted for him over Bush in 1988 - even today? No, but one thing he has been is a consistent liberal through the decades, even willing to say (later) that the US was kind of hypocritical to whine about the Russian interference in the 2016 election given our own history while simultaneously calling out Trump. One could argue "Dukakis should have hit back" but what was he supposed to do on crime? He DID gut punch Bush in the first debate on the flag "issue", and they had to drop it.

Dukakis has recently said on FOX NEWS that "Refusing to Raise the Debt Ceiling is Stupid". Spoken Like a True Democrat!

Dukaukis didn't lose because he had a clean campaign. He lost because he was an establishment hack who nonetheless had a weak personality. If he thinks being the grandson of an immigrant means you have to support unlimited illegal immigration, then he doesn't understand reality or the mood in the country, and he never did. He was the limousine liberal candidate for 1988. Part of his success was that Jesse Jackson emerged as his main challenger. I don't know what went wrong with the Gore and Gephardt campaigns but either would have had a much better shot against Bush.

Dukakis was a dull candidate. Very weak choice. Even if he won by a stroke of luck he would have been a one-term President. No way his policies would have even been 'yays' by the Republicans in the House and Senate. He would've been the Carter of the late 80s/early 90s. The Democrats sure had the weakest, least charismatic candidates that year. I think Gary Hart was the decent choice that year(had no scandals occurred). Look at where that liberalism/communsim/socialism led us now with BidenBrandon Harris in office. Lord, save us!
