We can see that Michael was mostly hurt because he killed his father’s son. For Vito the family was the most important thing in life and michael know’s that

@@wanrafidhi1898 Then again, later Michael deeply regretting on the execution of Fredo in The Godfather part 3, because Anthony his own son witnessed that incident and thus that incident serves as Anthony's reason why he didn't want to be involved with family's business at all (which, reminds Michael of his own younger years who himself also didn't want to be a part of family business).. Remember in The Godfather part 2, Michael's struggle in family is contrasted with Vito's struggle to *establish* the family from zero. Vito never killed or rat his own friends even when he had harsher childhood than Michael..

@@routhyFedo was literally partially retarded from suffering leukemia as an infant. The movie doesn't explicity say it like the book (KZread has a clip about this) but it shows little things to show his heart like when Sonny is blasting Mike about did he go to school to become stupid because he signed up for the military and Credo leans in to tell Mike he's happy for him. Fredo was manipulated by Roth in part because he always felt weak and stupid in a family of badasses and maybe he should have known like Michael says but it's hard to say for sure he did know. In any event he was kept alive until the.moyher died and by that time he would have just lived out hid days fishing and hoping Mike would forgive him. Whatever liability he was he would have never been in a position to be one again. Michael simply couldn't get past it. I get it if he truly believed his brother knew he'd be killed but that's a big IF if you ask me

As a man who keeps things very close to the chest, and keeps his circle small, you can sense that Michael is afraid and remorseful. He's forcing these things to the surface, and every word he says is painful. A lifetime of sins summed up in a few words. Beyond betraying himself and his wife, you can sense that he believes he betrayed the family by ordering the death of Fredo. He feels that he shattered that version of the family established by his father.

He is there to aid the sinner on how to reform his or her life and provide absolution in a formal manner. However it is only Christ who is actually forgiving sins. The Priest is merely the vessel. There are very holy Priests who actually have the gift to read souls. St. Padre Pio who died in 1968 was one who would tell the penitent if they had forgotten or omitted their sins. St. John Bosco was another. Their are Priest alive today who have that gift. In the end it is only through God’s Mercy that souls are forgiven. Hope that helps.

It’s one of the best performances in any trilogy of films - he was unlucky not to win an Oscar for any of the performances in the Godfathers - probably one of his most accurate performances in anything he’s done. Michael Corleone is to Al Pacino what Rocky is to Sly - it’s that level but clearly playing a multi layered hero to villian to anti-hero is one of the greatest achievements in cinema.

Michael Corleone was a cold businessman from the time he returned home in Part 1 and all of Part 2. But in Part 3, somehow miraculously, he was a caring and loving person and remorseful at his past. Somehow he became a compassionate human being during that time.

As classic as the first 2 movies are and the 3rd seems to be a disappointment in the eyes of many. This scene may be the most important in the whole trilogy because this is something we can all relate to. We all have dark secrets that we struggle to find ways to reveal and some of us live with that forvever..

I know that a lot of people think part three was not nearly as good as one and two but I just think it was a little bit misunderstood. I do agree it’s not as good as the first two, but I would not go as far to say that it doesn’t deserve to be called the Godfather because it does in my opinion. There were many many scenes in part three that I thought were just brilliant The ending could’ve been improved in some ways but altogether it was amazing.

The life of a Godfather never ends on straightening things out. First Solozzo and McCluskey, then Hyman Roth and Johnny Ola. Then Fredo because Roth and Ola manipulated him. And still business to take care of. By the the time he’s finished at the end of this, it’s the early 21st century and he’s in the same place Appolonia died. The only time The Godfather series was set in the future!

The theological problem with this scene is that, if the bishop does, in fact, believe Michael is not contrite for his (eg, he won’t change), then he CANNOT absolve him from his sins.
