Absolutely spot on.I am from the UK. Scotland to be precise, and former Fife Constabulary Police Constable. Michael Conrad had that presence about him as Phil Esterhaus.Great actor.Great series.

Damn straight. I just watched the episode of HSB when they scattered his ashes on Hill Street, broke my heart to watch that especially when the street sweeper had to clean all up.

It was still a great show without him because the rest of the cast was so great and Robert Prosky did a commendable job as the new roll call sergeant but I definitely missed Conrad.

@@jimgardner1569 I feel the same way about Barney Miller, as much as I missed Fish and Nick Yemana the show just continued to get even better and better without them only because the rest of the cast was so perfect and the writing stayed pretty sharp. Rare beasts when shows can survive without pivotal characters, I mean look at so many that faltered like The Andy Griffith Show without Don Knotts for one.

Michael Conrad was such a class guy. "Let's be careful out there!" will be always be etched in my brain. Hill Street was always a great show and without Hill Street there would be no Law & Order, Homicide, The Wire, etc. Many great actors and writers owe a great debt to HSB. Thank you Michael and the rest of the actors and writing team for making Thursday nights Must See TV.

That’s a lot of episodes. 80’s comedian Robert Klein told me he was given the role of Hawkeye Pierce but turned it down because he was making so much money doing stand up. It made Alan Alda a star.

What a field: Bruce Weitz and Charles Haid (Mick Belker and Andy Renko from Hill Street Blues) and Robert Walden and Mason Adams (Joe Rossi and Charlie Hume from Lou Grant) were also worthy. Neither Haid, Adams or Walden would win Emmys for their parts, Weitz finally won it in 1984

Wow what a fine actor he was, specially in Hill Street Blues. His character's nuanced humour, patience, and also sweet exasperation at his love-life ! Fantastic. Ive just bought a series box set 2nd hand from World of Books , in perfect condition (now in 2022). How i'm enjoying the sheer brilliance of that show. I'm so sad he died not long after...." be careful up there," Michael. 💘⚘💥💙

Michael Conrad appeared in numerous TV shows from the mid 1950's through the early 1980's. He was a respected actor and never lacked for work, but his portrayal of Sergeant Phil Esterhaus on Hill Street Blues was definitely the best role he ever had.

I am having a wonderful time re-watching HSB, one of my top three favourite TV series. At my time of life I have seen quite a few and HSB just has it all. Michael Conrad was perfectly cast as Phil Esterhaus. I’d love to know who came up with his signature line, Michael or a scriptwriter. It’s so memorable I’d like it to have been an ad-lib from the man himself.

I watched Hill Street Blues when it came out all the seasons. Now all the seasons are on Hulu and I'm watching them all over again. It's very sad that William is dead at such a young age oh, a couple others died as well from that show. Kiel Martin I think also died and so that the Mexican-American with the bald head also died. But it was always a great show and brings back a lot of memories to the good old days.
