There are some relatively tight federal sentencing guidelines. Don't have them memorized off the top of my head but with no downward departures except for the plea, I believe this was on the higher end of the guidelines.... now hes likely to be sent to a cushier prison camp as opposed to a tougher federal prison due to his ethnicity and nature of the crimes.

He was given a lighter sentence at the behest of Mueller for cooperating with him. Prosecutors wanted a stiffer penalty. We don't know what and how much he spilled. I didn't know that a person sentenced to prison for a felony was allowed to leave with their hands free in their own car with their family. Maybe federal court gives him a report date to show up for incarceration, but in most states, being sentenced to prison for a felony would normally result in being immediately put in custody of the department of corrections.

@Franco Venture I've heard of pretrial release, which is a huge issue (with some arguing for the abolition of cash bail being required as part of the process), and I knew (from Dog the Bounty Hunter of all things) that sometimes people were released in between conviction and sentencing in cases where sentencing is not done the same day, but I'm pretty sure that many states would not allow POST-SENTENCING release for a person sentenced to a multi-year prison term for a felony.
