what to say... difficult to put down words this quintet is amazing!! That Brecker solo in Naima the way he develops it from strat to finish is crazy. Yes and Roy has got something that is difficult to find in a trumpet player, apart from technique, is SOUND.

3 masters at their very best + great drums and bass.

Mr. Brecker and Mr. Hargrove on “The Poet” (in particular) ...... Wow!!!!!!! The sax/trumpet combo is something that works just well enough to play the “head” to get to the solos, or it’s something that is spectacular in itself. It can’t really be practiced. Wish we could heard more of them together.

As good as it gets-one of the best "supergroups" playing tribute to Miles and Trane.

An absolute masterpiece. An extraordinary quintet. An exceptional interplay among these incredible musicians. A wonderful memory of Roy and Michael ...

This gig is right up there with the best; the MD'-ing (and arranging.?) by Herbie(?), and how complementary Roy and MB are with their tones and Miles/Wayne approach. Roy is sublime with his patience and canny slurring. Every solo is a monster, tho i don't like that MB gurgling on so what, empty the water out, lol.. How Herbie comes roaring in on 'Sorcerer' is amazing. Must have been chanting. Mraz and Mr. Jones are tasteful. Many thanks for post. Peace

notice how herbies left hand NEVER gets lazy during the soloing of his right hand. he is a master at this. even other great players left hand gets lazy in chord outlining when they get craze especially during very quick tempos but not herbie. his hands are ALWYAYS working together.

Pinocchio (by W . Shorter) is maybe the most original version i've listen heard (the free-jazz is in) ; Herbie to : with a certain "Cecil Taylor" feeling

is this the same performance as what was released on the record? these are just astonishing music moments, i'm so glad these people were able to come together in this way.

The original band was with Patitucci and Brian Blade. That's the one on record. I knew they toured later with this rhythm section, but had never heard them until now. Incredible@!

wonderfull... "Pinochio" wasn't in the CD version so this is the first time I hear thi arrangement... very interesting

Yes never had him down as one of 'those' pianists before. It almost sounds like someone dubbed it over for a joke! Even more tuneless than Jarret but thankfully not as loud ;)

at first it sounds like he's messing around with various types of Eminor scales, and then he just goes way out that it's a lil hard to describe

@@thechunkytrucker5111 yes at first he went from D minor to a whole phrase on D harmonic minor then D melodic minor and from maybe some modes melodic minor maybe while incorporating chromaticism and maaaaybe some fourth patters but in what scale or mode? I I DONT KNOW! Then he just took off just crazy and sick and insane and umm, aaah, oooo…..🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯. . . . . . . Oh crap what happened? Where am I? What day is it?!?!

Try putting it at slow speed and learning by ear. You'll get some cool stuff for your own playing!

Wonderful set, but when will pop recording engineers learn that CYMBALS are VERY important to JAZZ drummers? Willie is keeping time on the ride cymbal, but I never hear it in the mix! You can't close mic everything else and use distant overheads to get cymbals!
