Michael Brecker and John Scofield - Jazz Licks for Rockers

Музыка

In this episode I will show you ways to incorporate Jazz Licks into your Rock Solos. This includes Substitute Changes, Chromatic Side- Stepping, and adding Dorian & Mixolydian notes to your Pentatonic Scales. We will go over some licks by John Scofield and Michael Brecker playing over one chord.

Michael Brecker is the reason I didn't quit tenor sax. When I heard the solo from "Purple Lagoon" on Zappa's "Live in New York" I told myself that if I could figure out 10% of that, I would keep working on sax. That was 1986 and I still play tenor. He has a lot to offer all musicians.

Amazing lesson. Even for just the chromatic sidestepping part (for me). The majority of guitarists know the pentatonic and it’s what most stay with. This is an awesome way to break out of the box shapes. More of these concepts please 🙏!

I LOVE Rick's Beato content... Is bar none, the most knowledgeable of all guitar leaders out there... I watch all your stuff over and over!!!In regards these type of "Licks in the Style of" I think there Is an aspect to be mentioned: Besides the correctly transcribed notes fir each lick, what make these lines what they are (therefore makes Scofield or Brecker who they are), Is the PHRASING!!!!! It Is so "day and night" to see Rick play and then see the artist plays... all the right notes are there.. but the phrasing change the lick completely... I love bot Ricks and Sco and Breker phrasing..

I like to mix Melodic Minor, Mixolydian and m7b5 arpgeggios, over a one chord vamp for an outside sound. The mM7 arpeggio from the b3 over a minor vamp sounds killer too. When side stepping is added to these scales & arpeggios, it's like going from Earth to Neptune & back again.

Don't see how these licks, as cool as they are, would work in a rock context, where the underlying chords would typically not be used... ? Sure, they are certainly chops builders, but aside from some Allman Bros. jams, they would be too 'outside' to mine ear. Thanks to Professor Rick, and/or whomever responds to my query.

It's all about context. Sure, when the lick it self is isolated it sounds awful, however when put back into context with the rest of the solo it (most of the time) does resolve pretty nicely. Also, sometimes stuff is better without properly resolving if it fits the general mood and tone of the solo and or song

Do you really think analyzing a lick in terms of scales/chords is informative? Do you think that's how Brecker came up with it? I have my doubts. To me it seems 'after the fact' ... and that something else created the lick .... Let's say a lick is like a sentence. What does the lick mean? I'm vague, I understand ... but scale analysis has never gotten me anywhere ...
