Respect to Bolton. It sounds like the joke initially was "Here's romantic crooner Michael Bolton singing some nasty hardcore lyrics" and by telling them to go in a different direction they came up with something much more creative and funnier. Love the Lonely Island and it sounds like this was a fruitful collaboration!

Very astute! I hadn't thought of that, but I agree.
The title of this video is pretty misleading. It sounds like they Lonely Island treated him badly when they first met, when that's not at all what happened if you listen to the interview.
@Serai3

Only if you're not familiar with how movies are made. A treatment is a 3 to 5 page summary written before a script, to give a solid idea of how the film will go. So this treatment was probably about a page and a half, explaining the ideas for the song and video.

LMFAO, right?!!?!
I like how the actual video seems like a satire of that story. Like, they were trying to do something nastier (which is represented by going to the club) and Michael Bolton just wants to talk about his films. I mean, it's so clear the image of them receiving the e-mail and thinking "Oh man, he doesn't want to do anything we want" and coming up with that song. Man that's hilarious. Great song too!
For all the heat & (basically) ridicule Michael Bolton takes on the Internet (but then again, who doesn't?), he seems like a funny, cool-ass dude, and his appearance in that song, along with this interview made me respect him a ton.

He has done something amazing - embraced both his target demographic and the demographic which sees what he did in the 80s as a little cringey. Did you see his Netflix special? It was awesome - both in a humorous way, but he also sang really well. I think he's got a chance of going down as the Tony Bennett of the 80s.
Man, I've never seen Bolton speak outside of his music. The fact that he's focused on what Pacino and Depp think of his portrayal of them, even in jest, right out of the gate is unexpectedly cool. What a champ. He can sing whatever he likes however he likes as far as I'm concerned now :P (and holy crap his commitment to the bits in the Lonely Island collaboration is what makes that video one of my faves from them)
Brilliant move for him. This introduced him to a whole new generation, AND introduced him as somebody who is really cool and funny! Great move for Michael Bolton. And, of course, he really rocked that song. :)

I think it's really hard to estimate how much this helped Michael Bolton with gaining fans or acceptance outside his base, but I would imagine it was quite immense. I believe it's Lonely Islands most viewed song. And that says a lot. Cause those guys were viral city.
The song is excellent, and Bolton was a perfect choice for it.

The great thing about this, is that it's both good music and humor. It shows Bolton as both a good singer and a good sport and it actually doesn't feel that it's at his expense at all, but that he plays more of a character. It's just all good ingredients in the result.

Michael Bolton is what made that song great.
The wholesomeness and innocence on Bolton's part (until the end) is what makes the song so funny and catchy.

Hey, Michael? I know this will never reach you. You did a *GREAT* job in that music video! I'm sure this will sound cliche, but that particular song brought me and a friend of mine HOURS of entertainment. Singing it, wondering where you got that pirate hat in the "Now back to the good part!" scene.... You show a lot of courage, mocking yourself. You do it well, and that caused me to re-evaluate everything about your career. Pulling off that crooner song style coupled with Pirates and Scarface and Erin Brockovitch? Genius. You did it really well. Thank you. I know it was an assload of work, but you did a GREAT JOB! And I'm appreciative of that.

he unlike most people who hit the level of stardom actually refrained from "snorting mountains of cocaine". hes 61, but has not trashed his voice. what most impresses me about him is how well he took care of his kids, by himself. he even walked away from the career for a time to make sure he was around. easier for him to do with a pile of money, but most people would just keep producing and pay someone else to handle the kids.

Blown away he can carry a tune? Whatthe. But yea, seems like a good guy.
What I like about the song is how amusingly wholesome the chorus is as Bolton nerds out about these movies in contrast to the typical lines about clubbing and rock-star/gangster vulgarities in the verses, so I think Bolton making the song clean was what really sold it for me. (There was that one Scarface line but it can be excused as overenthusiastic verbatim quoting I guess :/)
