Towns in Central West New South Wales are infested with mice after a bumper crop led to a mass breeding season.
Locals are losing thousands of dollars trying to keep them at bay.

Would love to have had black n white bunnies hopping about though lol. I do remember feeling quite pleased through the night every time I heard a mousetrap bang shut! I was determined to find every single tiny hole the little blighters found to get into the house. I must have gone through a ton of steel wool and I did eventually stop them entering the house. I think it was 1982/83 we had that plague at the end of a long drought. The dust storms were horrendous! After the mice we had locusts but they didn’t last long and then a frog plague some time after that. The dates are fuzzy it was a long time ago. I do remember the popping sound driving over the frogs. Was quite a sight at night time seeing the road ahead covered in them. They didn’t hang about long either. For a start ,for house owner you can surround your house perimeter with corrugated sheets or flat steel sheets at least 2'ft high to form a barrier that the mice cannot climb over. If needed make 2 barriers a few feet apart. Likewise for farmers , you can designate an area to create a similar barrier to store your produce. Make sure the barrier is tight leaving no gap.Thats my suggestion.

I lived on a farm in my youth and there is one lesson I learned. If you have a food source available, creatures are going to eat and nest in it. If your crop is just lying there in the open you will always have a serious problem. The Government needs to help them build facilities where the crop can be stored to minimize the damage and or get the crops to processing facilities quickly. I have seen other videos of Australian farms with bails of wheat/hay or whatever just sitting in an open field for weeks. No other method works. Our barns had tons of hay and just a few rodents a couple cats can handle. We never have grain or food stuffs just lying there in open areas. This issue with my cousins in the South is never ending.

I think they need "giant" automated mouse killing traps, where they work 24 hours a day, and kill thousands in a couple hours. I've seen these in the smaller versions, but they need HUGE automatic traps, that automatically drown them, and them dispose of them -- all on their own. Right now, they are breeding at a higher rate than they are killing, so it's a losing battle.

Having lived through 2 mouse plagues in South Australia I understand what they are going through. Mice in their hundreds of thousands. The dogs don't bother chasing the little horrors after a while. The cats ditto. laying down poison does not seem to make a dent in the numbers. Houses have to be completely cleaned out every weekend. All the cupboards and drawers have to be emptied and everything washed. Food checked and thrown out if the mice have been, they leave little calling cards. Catching and killing mice in the bath every morning. The dead mice in the house found before they stink too much. On a farm the hay put away for bad years is fit for nothing. Saddles and horse gear is ruined by thousands of little teeth. They will eat just about anything. But, the best is yet to come. When the food starts to run out - they start to eat each other. Yes, you get dead 1/2 mice, bits of mice, bits of legs, bits of fur and of course the smell.

Ive killed 15 mice over the weekend. No joke. One day they appeared in the bird cage. Saw only 2. Kept setting the traps and oh my word a whole extended family moved in. Its been a massacre

@@bearsagainstevil yea cats were killing off native songbird populations and small reptiles. Using a invasive species to take out another isn't a good plan...

yeah, cats are probably one of the most evil pets you can get, they actually don't just kill them, they'll torture them for entertainment for as long as it will keep breathing... if tomorrow you woke up the size of a mouse you'll be it's next victim

some years ago we had a mouse plague in SA, and it never made juxh news. drove home one night and hundreda of mice were running over the road.... it was strange and creepy. but didn't last long and they vanished. many poor owls died too on the road, but I guess some scored huge. they were white mice, not native mice.. never got to hear how that all panned out. maybe 15 years ago now

A female rat can produce a litter of 24 within 3 months of being born... There needs to be a resource pool for the cat population in order to keep the rat population in check. this isnt a new thing but at least its being addressed.
