Me being a Hawaiian and watching the Hawaii mens team. All I saw were volleyball players being embraced by the Hawaiian people in the stands. They soaked it all in, and embraced the culture. Honestly, I think thats what helped them win. Hawaiian people are very loving people, we show choke respect, we just want that same respect in return. I love talking about these topics, and I'm glad you guys are opening the door for these kids of conversations. Mahalo guys!

Worsley bros took UH to the next level and represented the school exceptionally well. Having lived in Hawaii as a white male I definitely agree with the conversation around respect, humility, and being willing to learn every step of the way.

UH is a a fine school, but hard to keep the local boys home when Stanford, UCLA, and USC come calling. You get top tier education, and state of the art facilities. Thanks to players like Gage that helped UH win a chip, maybe the local boys will be inclined to stay. If you represent Hawaii and you humble, and hardworking. We back you up.

The thing is are local boys any good compared to mainland boys? There are a few exceptions like Cowell and Hogland, but most of them don’t cut it.

@@locomojoboy2 UH don't normally get the top tier local recruits. Most of the good ones attend private schools, and will not settle for UH after graduation. If you get a full ride at USC, UCLA, UH and your a punahou graduate, theres no question which one you will go to. They are going for education first, volleyball second. Case in point, the shoji brothers, Micah christenson, and micah maa. Recently, ryan Wilcox, Jameson McKibbin and Jack Deuchar. Now that UH have won back to back, perhaps the good local ones that are good enough to go pro, will choose volleyball first and go to UH. I don't think Cowell and Hogland, were the top recruits at the time. However, they blossomed into great players.

I’m not too into ncaa but I do notice, most men’s UH team are not native or from Hawaii. I know Hawaii got volleyball in their blood, I wish there were more Hawaiians on the team. My favorite year was w Kimo Tuyay and Tony Ching. That year they played Pepperdine for the championship

UH Mens volleyball from my point of view represents the school, never heard or seen any non-Hawaiian player say they are native Hawaiian. The people embrace these players. Sorry but Ma'a and Christensen were way off on this topic. The same can be said about them...going off and playing for other schools, playing for team USA. Are you Hawaiian or American, many kanaka maoli don't associate with being American. So you can pick and choose what you are? And they are both hapa, half white. If you can dish it be ready for it, because someone is going to throw it at you. I watch because I love volleyball...the sport. I don't care what race you are.

You being Polynesian can understand why many local boys go to the mainland to play volleyball. Many local parents encourage their kids to go to a big named school to get not just a better education but to grow up and mature. They learn how to live in a different environment instead of the laid back way of the isles. While that is great, just wish more would stay home and show the rest of the country, volleyball is a way of life here due to the perfect weather and raised up on vb in the neighborhoods.

Funny how Micah C. talks about repping Hawaii and the culture. Yet Charlie Wade has done just that. He has made learning about Hawaii and it's language/culture a requirement. Even more so when he brought up Judge Thomas Kaulukukui. He didn't have to but it shows how he embraced Hawaii.

Character is huge. In life and in sports. If you’re competitive yet know how to control your emotions you will get huge respect from most. If you’re competitive, arrogant and a bit of taunt, then you will be the villain. Character is #1 of what tells a persons story. Or the cover of their story anyway. The cover of a story say alot about it. Even though the saying goes “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”.
