Hi Paul, Hi Kyle. I AM an audiophile of sorts. I graduated from UCSD with a B.A. in ICAM; Basically a music technology degree. With the compressor, you're not adding an "amount" to the signal, like when adding the other effects like chorus or delay. The knob for the compressor is setting the threshold in decibels for when the compressor is activated. If sound coming into the line is above that set threshold, the compressor is activated and compresses the signal. How much it is compressed is dependent upon the compression ratio you choose. If you need a sound guy to help you set up, answer audio tech questions, or just help you get familiarized, I'd love to help you guys. I live just outside LA, Ventura County, and all I would want in return is a thumbscrew T-shirt :P haha. Anyway, have fun with the new gear and the fun new effects. Can't wait to see you use it on the next Awesome Hardware. Keep up the great work guys. I'm gonna build my own computer for music production soon because of your channels.

Computer-Aided Manufacturing in the music industry, not sure what your major is, but you got some degree i guess. pulse-code modulation, PCM sound, a codec to encode sound! You only need the same codec running to reproduce, to do the encoding to analog signals. It's kind of easy, the less compression the better, lossless streams work the best, but is your player able to reproduce it again, or does it go back to a less good ratio, because your player can't play > 19k2 steams, there the tresh hold comes, when it's producing a less good analog signal then the source is. So try to decode the stream to the original signal again, too highest rate as possible that your DAC can reproduce, the less compression the better! You don't need a sound guy at all here, just basic knowledge about codecs enough here! Keep the signal on the original format, the decoding DAC in the last step of the process, in the headset or DAC to the speaker set, some speakers can do that job too, inducing a DAC in the speaker set. You don't need any soundcards for that, onboard codes are the best these days!

Love these types of videos! Please do more of them as you get new stuff. Wouldn’t of minded an extra 5 minutes, or even more, of you playing around with it. Pure hardware videos can get stale after awhile, these always break them up enough to keep things really interesting. The behind the scene type of hardware that allow for all the magic to happen always seem really interesting. It’s like Linus’s fascination with servers. Am I ever going to have full server rack full of high-end commercial hardware that I could store and edit hundreds of hours of 8K video on? No. Do I absolutely love watching his videos on them? YASSSSS

exactly how i would see it - things we wouldnt buy ourself since we dont have any use for it but its fun to see how your (Paul, Kyle, Linus, etc.) setup works and runs i think thats even more fun than having the 10th. review of a 1080 ti or just another AIO Cooler because after benchmarking most of the stuff lands on some shelf - but tech like the Yamahasoundboard/mixer is something we are experiencing regularly on your channel and its fun to know which tech u r using to run your channel (even all the kinks and probs u got with it - probably even a possible new segment: 'tech i use that drives me nuts ;)' ) so keep on doing these kind of 'random' tech videos because technophiles are always curious :)
I purchased one myself and do not regret it for my streams. It is just awesome.

I live right down the road from Sweetwater HQ. I bought this a few weeks ago from them and the staff is fantastic and very helpful.
Great little mix board for your application. Soon as I saw what you got I was like, "oh he must have gotten that for the compressors lol
Can you hook up an Android Smartphone to the Yamaha MG10XU Mixer for the purpose of recording (with software on PC of course) a two-way phone conversation for a podcast? If the answer is yes, what would the connections be on this Mixing Board?
It is a "Locking DIN" not a BNC Paul
This may be my favorite Paul's Hardware video ever
LOL That bottle pop actually made me flinch! It was so loud and sudden!
I love how you are socially aware enough to not want to "feed the Amazon beast". Very well put and I feel the same way
One more thing.. I am not sure exactly how informational this is but you guys are VERY entertaining. Absolutely like kids with a new toy.
Kudos to you. Thanks for taking the initiative to provide a higher quality viewing experience for us. It wasn't bad before, but I'm sure you can have fun with the different voice effects and add some new moves to your repertoire.
Interpretation of Kyle is ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON
Hello, can you help me? I have Rode Procaster and Behringer Umc22. But i have environmental noise like PC's fan and my voice is muffled. What should i do? I want most clear voice. Nowadays im looking to "Triton Audio FetHead". But i think my audio interface is bad. Should i buy mixer or audio interface or fethead? I have a few models on my mind. Scarlett 2i2 or Behringer XENYX Q802USB. I will use only microphone so i dont need more channels.

EDIT: after re-reading your comment it sounds like you have decent mics. I would suggest you find a way to add EQ to your mic. boost the high's and the mid's a tiny bit, and get rid of the low end and you should sound more clear. You can also turn the gain down on your mic and bring the mic closer to your mouth to reduce background noise. Getting a pop filter can help with plosives and bear in mind that the closer the mic gets to your mouth the "louder" the low end becomes creating a "muffled" sound. EQ can help with this. I'm going to leave the rest of this stuff down below bc I hate myself: Depends on what you need. A directional mic may be what you need. You can find many different directional mics online and one of the most common mics for talking voices is the Shure SM7B. If that is out of your price range, then I would suggest you look into Microphones with a cardioid polar pattern. Sometimes its not the equipment that runs your mic but rather the mic itself. Condenser Mics commonly require phantom power to operate (I say commonly because some mics have their own built in power supply from batteries) but give great sounding vocals (for talking), and this phantom power can be supplied by an audio interface or a mixer such as the one featured in this video. if you just need a simple way to record yourself then I recommend a Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio interface. The Gen 3 uses usb c to standard usb to connect to your computer and allows for one XLR connection and one 1/4 jack connnection. It's only 109.99 right now and is a great device for beginners looking into recording themselves or just as a method of talking to people over the internet. It also has connections on the back of it to drive (or send audio to) monitors (speakers). and has a 1/4 in headphone jack, which you can buy a 1/4 adapter to use with standard headphones. The nice thing about the mixer featured in this video is not only can you record yourself, but you can also EQ your own mic, add compression, and add silly effects to your voice which is cool. Compression in a nut shell just prevents the microphones volume/or level from going over a specified amount. Set the gain or "sensitivity" of the mic and then add compression and then no matter how loud you speak into the microphone the compressor will not allow the volume to exceed what you set. EQ in regards to this mixer and other mixers like it, just takes pre assigned bands within the audio and allows you to essentially make them louder or more quiet. (aka, manipulate high pitch noises, mid range noises, and bass) The other nice thing about the mixer featured in this video is if, perhaps you want to connect more than one mic to your computer/record more than one person, this mixer allows you to connect up to 4 mics via either XLR or 1/4 adapter, along with 6 other 1/4 jack connections. From what I can see, only 2 of the channels with XLR connections have a compressor, which in reality is all you would ever need. Just for sending good audio across a stream or to record JUST yourself, I would recommend the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, if you want to get a little bit more serious then look into getting a mixer. Research the best mixer for your needs and make sure that your mixer is capable of connecting to your computer via USB or understand the way that audio signals work. Some mixers only send audio across 1/4 connections and if that is the case you will need a separate device (such as a Focusrite Scarlett Solo) to capture and send the signal into your computer. The more I learn about audio equipment (I'm in college becoming an audio engineer) the more complicated it gets. thanks for reading this wall of text. Hope you learned something and maybe this will help you make a semi-educated purchase.

Get the NS1 plug in from Waves and use that when editing its super easy to use and does a great job!
If you ever read this, Paul, one of the things I liked most in this episode is that you don't "pretend" to know a lot about audio - and yet, you seem to know more then some of the experts out there...
Does the eliminate the need for a dac/amp to drive a high ohm headphones? I was planning on getting a Mayflower arc dac/amp (the replacement of the O2) to drive my high resistance headphones, and then I started looking for a mixing board to use for KZread and Twitch so if this can eliminate the need for the Arc then it would basically pay for itself there.
What I like to see is how this device is connected by various types of cables to each inputs and outputs eg. speakers, TV, laptop, amplifier, smartphone, tablets etc. Thank you.
Can you use the USB interface of the Yamaha MG10XU to do the audio recording so that we can hear what the ADC sounds like? Right now I believe you are recording the analog output to the Zoom recorder.
8:46 when he sounded like antvenom xD
ive been using this thing for about a year now for my mic and am music stuffs. I love it
Most people would go into deep technical details, Paul just dives straight into the surreal. Excellent.
sir can i plug it directly to the powerplug? no more avr or something not to cause damage of the mixer?
My room mate just got one of those for the studio. It's fucking bad ass.
Thanks Paul. My question is do you need a separate sound card before you can record to cubase for example?
I love the Wolverine-style "SNIKT!" sound when you open the box cutter.
That knife sound.. Sheesh! Whatever mic you were using pics up amazing detail.
As long as YOU are happy with it, but it of course sounded way better than having the mic farther away. :) I personally returned mine as it didnt pack enough "punch" for the voice compared to my other pre-amps.
Sweetwater is awesome and they will call every now and then just to see how you are doing.

This was great! More videos of you just having fun with random tech please. :)
Hell yeah sounds great ! I watch you & Kyle on my surrounding sound system TV and yup sometimes it gets really loud .
I Have that exact sound board and I love it, I'm still trying to get it so it's not so loud, albeit I don't have a stream community or KZread at that, so I can never ask people when I start using it
1:52 Paul is that friend who always has their knife from Gus Johnsons vid.
oh man i remember doing this stuff in high school, its good you went hardware since it makes life easier in a live setting, unfortunately running your audio into a DAW and then routing said audio out into OBS or whatever program you use tends to cause latency issues.
Fantastic Paul. Sounding off on a good note.

FlippinFreds Free Form Factor I could notice the difference, it's much more clear and the EQ is better.
I like to hear myself in the headset as long as it is real time no delay. This allows you to speak accordingly and know what you are delivering.
Sounds clean, better than previous sound. What was to total upgrade cost?
The recoding from USB interface is very low. I wonder how you connect it to your computer to record. Thanks!
If I buy a mg12xu mixer with a solid xlr mic, do I need a preamp or external soundcard for high quality sound for my stream ?
I'm REALLY glad I watched this! I get REALLY loud sometimes, so this sounds like it would fit!
I have that same mixer. I really enjoy mine.
I have this yamaha console and I freaking love it. I record many songs on it and they sound super professional. It's the main hub in my studio.
Are you still using this Paul? I've had mine for years now and I love it.
Tech-tubers and audio gear is almost always a hilarious mix ... fun video, guys!
Can you output the main audio from both the XLR and TRS jacks?
Can you adjust the attack sustain release of the comp?
Paul, congrats for the new buy, it is a great piece of equipment. By counting all the inputs you will see there's a total of 10 inputs, hence the product title.
Helpful video! Thank you: I hope you can help with a problem I am having with a mixer in this series: I am not getting audio to go from MG16XU audio mixer to my computer. What am I doing wrong? Here is what I am doing: I am using the MG16XU to feed my dedicated streaming computer's OBS studio. (My computer has an i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20Ghz, 16GB RAM [soon to be 32GB], 64-bit OS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and 1TB HD.) I downloaded and installed Yamaha's Steinberg USB driver V1.9.10-2 for Win 10/8.1/7(SP1) (32bit/64bit). I have a USB A/B 2.0 cable going from the mixer to my computer. (In accordance with the guidance from the manufacturers manual, I am using a USB 2.0 cable instead of a 3.0.) I have tried connecting the cable to the computer's USB 2.0 input and the USB 3.0 input. In both cases, my computer recognizes the MG-XU, and in the device manager I set it as the default. The MG-XU mixer’s level meter displays appropriate levels, and I hear audio via headset in the mixer’s RCA Monitor Out. Lastly, I have tried setting the LINE / USB to either setting to no avail. Despite my effort, I am not able to transmit audio via USB to my computer for OBS. Again, what am I doing wrong? Thanks, Tom Jr.
Professional audio guy here. Good choice for the money. Good on you for caring about your audio... not many people do on the youtubes. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Paul !!! looking into it NOW !!!
hey I just bought one of these for my AT2035!
So does the grey mute button actually mute the headphones output? Like example does it mute the other people talking in ur headphones I’m just trying to mute other players voices in my stream
i dam near had a heart attack when buddy popped that beer open in his face. It was so sudden and random i wasn't expecting it
hi Paul, loved the video. Just have a question. Did you record audio separate or along with video into dslr/camera? how did you get the audio output? cheers
Hey does the mixer function as a pre amp for let’s say... a shure smb7? Or would I need to go through a cloud lifter, then into the mixer. Also where do headphones play a part? Do I need to go through an amp like a mayflower arc then into the mixer or does it serve as a headphone amp already?
Been trying to choose between an audio interface and a mixer, this video came at the perfect time Thank you Paul you beautiful man
That was a cool video, we need more wacky reviews and more joe !
This is the Audio board I've been thinking about playing, and I'm so glad to see it actually sounds very damn impressive, now to convince the wife to let me buy it :D
So from this video, possibly by accident, I learned that Monoprice has a mixer! I didn't realize they had one. I'm looking for something closer to the $60/$70 range than $200. Very helpful video all the way around! Thanks!
Best review ever. Needs more Joe though.
I have this mixer as well Paul! Love this thing!
Yamaha makes great stuff, I have two drum sets, a digital piano, and another keyboard from them and they're all wonderful.
Man I remember when Yamaha sent these out to all tech youtubers and my timeline was full of reviews.
Sweetwater is awesome. Nick is my sales engineer. He calls me up every once in a while to check on me and ask about things I was considering.
Funny I have this exact model on my Amazon Wishlist, I've just added a note to it with a link to this video so I can come back and watch again when I finally save up the cash, thanks :-)
I've had my MG10XU for about a year. its awesome
Do you find the serration useful on that knife? I got the straight one and just wondered if i am missing out. Now you have a compressor you need to normalize your volume to 23LUFS.
I'm SUPER impressed! Just got mine yesterday to replace my ART Dual Tube Pre. It's like day and night with the mic, headphones, and adjustability. Seriously, I feel like a full grown man after realizing that I've moved up in the world :P
Thanks Paul & Joe great garage blog
DUDE! The line from An American Prayer by The Doors was so awesome. That record has special meaning to me and my friends and it's so freaking random that you would pull from it. My respect for you has just doubled. Bravo, sir!
Paul can you monitor yourself as well as hear USB playback at the same time via this mixer?
Will this remove Mic Latency?
Have you thought about offloading your video switching to a hardwear solution like the Blackmagic Television Studio HD? It's more stable than OBS/xsplit and you can feed the audio in through XLR so that syncing the audio isn't an issue anymore. Might be a good upgrade for your streams.
Do you need an Analog to digital converter to use this ?
So does this thing has dac/amp/mixer? External sound card?
So many possibilities now with your new mixer. Can't wait to see what new intro you come up with LOL! Also, the sound quality difference is night and day!
is it enough to power 250 ohms headphones ?
yes do these types of videos. more videos is always appreciated!!
3:47 Somebody help me, I get that same problem when i move my mic around. Can somebody tell me what causes it? Bad cable??
I'm a bit late to the party, but this is the exact model I'm considering at my local Guitar Center, but for a single computer setup using both the onboard audio and an additional sound card to handle game and discord separately, then run both audio streams through OBS for streaming.
New setup sounds softer and closer.. its nice
What kind of speakers are you using? how can you listen music in your Pc? thanks
i use this mixer rode nt1a record voice in macbook but when i listen output got minimum vocal plzz help
New setup definitely sounds warmer than the old one. I like it!
The new sound quality is so much better! You can literally hear it. So much less echo as well!
Been watching your channel for a while. I do like the branch out into audio tech. Because, why not.
Is there any way to route pc audio to the mixer, and then to headphones?
*watches on crappy cellphone speekers*

Well compression should make a noticable difference even in a smartphone speaker
Hello. I've used the MG10XU for announcing football & soccer(stadium use). I always press down/on the pad/26db button just below the XLR insert for the microphone(far left). If in the pad/up position, it seems to pick up too much surrounding sound. When pushed in (26db), less sound goes into the mic. I'm trying to use the board now for online video (think youtube), production as I'm a teacher forced to work from home. Do you have a better explanation of this button? Thank you in advance,
I don’t see my peak level left and right flashing up and down. Can you please tell me how to get it to work? Thank you.
heyyyy sir. Im getting feedback without turning anything else on. that green monitor on my Yamaha is up to about 45. my XLR was loose once, and I tightened it and that fixed it. any ideas? thanks.
This video was fricken awesome dude lol you better introduce awesome hardware with that dope voice you had going!
hey kyle thank u for supporting my local sound company!!!!
I hook it up to my Yamaha HS8 with my MG10XU. Put the out line as "MG-XU". Still no sound. Is there like a button am I supposed to click on the Mixer for the audio to come to the speakers?
Sir i have bought mg10xu for home recording purpose ,but when i strat to record ,i found that my mixer gave me recording vocal output along with very irritating hissing sound ,also recorded vocal output is very low in sound .so does this means my mg10xu is a faulty unit ,bcoz in your video ,the sound is amazing louder and noice free . Please help me by replying, thankyou
Awesome knife. Great sound when you opened it
holy damn the audio is SO damn nice with the new stuff
Paul and viewers..quick silly question. I have both SSDs and HDDs in my system. My OS and games are on SSDs. The only thing I use the HDDs for is storage. But being a big gamer does having HDDs in my system, slow my PC down in any way? Should I simply put SSDs in my next build?
Great video! I enjoyed it, laughed a few times. More of these, please!
