Personally I use flashcards and mnemonics for difficult words of test prep i.e. GRE. These are super helpful.

As someone who moved to the USA at a teenage age, I would suggest that learn the basic vocabulary first. Learn the concept of finding parts of speech in a sentence. So whenever you find a word that is unknown to you, catch the parts of speech and try your best to guess the meaning. For instance, if you find a word that is adjective (parts of speech); that’s mean it describes what noun up to in certain way. That moment, guess the meaning of what best suit to the noun and then look for the meaning/definition. I am not sure if my explanation is understandable to you but believe me that’s how I improved my vocabulary. Although I started high school here in the United States and it’s quite different situation than you.

My husband encourage to me for study. In Bangladeshi curriculum systems is awful. Students always struggle. Teacher doesn't know how to talk with student.
