I made the trigger area as large as I could without sacrificing the ergonomics for finger and hand position on the back and front of the handle itself. It's one of the somewhat unfortunate compromises I had to make on the design.

@@HeathHeil I should have looked at thingiverse before asking. Now I see there are guts right in front of the trigger well so making that larger would mean redesigning internals. (A major pain I'm guessing.) A winter style trigger guard droops down to make more room in the trigger well for gloved hands and should reduce accidental mag drops like Chaylo was having. Do you think shorting the trigger guard spring would help Chaylo? I really like the leaver type mag release found on real steel pistols that I'd guess helped inspire your design. I hope you don't think I'm trying to be a "back seat designer". I really admire your work and I'm just trying to make suggestions that might broaden your user base.

@@wadekirby8575 unfortunately, there's really not much that can be done here... Possibly a smaller mag release could be added, like on whatever that hk pistol is that has the small release. Mp7 might have it too. Then a standard trigger guard could be there instead of this. As for the spring... That's about as small as you can go, and is quite stiff. I've pretty much never accidentally dropped a mag, so I hadn't really thought about making it even harder lol

probably not possible. you would need a breach, which would need ample space behind or in front of the magazine. the plunger tube would also really be challenging to figure out.

Captain Slug was working on something like that, and aside from the monstrously sized grip required, it (at best) was only clocking maybe 90 fps, with no clear solution for more power. The pigeon gets high shots of ~112, in semi auto, so it's still probably the better choice. I have wanted a nerf pistol with a mag in the handle so bad. Desert pigeon does not sound terribly intimidating though, I wish it was called Desert Hawk or something lol XD

I was talking about getting one to mod into a "dove hornet" from borderlands and called it the desert hawk by mistake. It's an all around better name

This is my preferred sidearm for HvZ now. I run a mark 2 with the rev trigger in the back of the grip and its in gen 1 modulus colors so no black anywhere. I carry 5 mags and use the 9 dart mags made for it so i can fit almost 200 darts without being bogged down in my loadout. Modulus ecs-10 as my primary with seven 22 dart magazines

the whole receiver and slide of the Pigeon is chunkier than a Hera pistol. you thought a Hera pistol was the chunky one of the cut down stock blasters to be a nerf sidearm but you be wrong, that title belongs to the Pigeon

This kinda reminds me of the Soviet Stetchkin and the DEagle both at once.

It would be a metric tonne slower but the euro heel release could be done relatively easily to deal with that trigger guard issue. Looks like alucards 454casul pistol to me

The talon compatible version has no mag release if that becomes a bigger issue for you

You could probably get it quite smaller, but I'd need to invest in more nerf parts and bits to design it.

It is the only place I can recommend with any reliability. You can try Craigslist but that is every bit as unreliable as thrift stores. You could also try Nerf Buy/Trade/Sell but same problem. Ebay really is your best bet and they tend to go for as little as $20 there.

I got mine from Gumtree, if that's an option where you are. Thrift stores, garage sales etc. will be the best place to find a Stampede for a low price as, although eBay is certain to have stacks of Stampedes, the size of that lad will require a hefty shipping fee.

@@totophi Not at all, it's just less compact that way. I've run just my pigeon at games, and then I'll use my katanas, since it's a primary in that case. If I run it as a secondary, then I won't really use the full size ones. Not everyone has access to a printer or the smaller mags, and it's still a secondary even with larger mags

How would you feel about a CO2 semi automatic rifle to go with that? I'm currently working on one and I'd like your opinion. Target FPS Goal of 130-200 (adjustable through on board regulator)

I think it is a neat concept. I would never get one as 99% of the games I have been to specifically ban CO2 powered blasters. Not sure why given that it is really no different than HPA but who knows?

@@CaptainXavier i think some of it comes from airsoft since c02 airsoft guns shoot extremely hard and are banned in cqb games so they adopted greengas as it works in c02 guns but gives low fps.

You are not wrong. There are Nerf blasters that shoot faster and hit harder than most Airsoft guns. It is a very blurry line sometimes.

I find it slightly annoying that everyone associates the Desert Eagle with the .50 Caliber version. Desert Eagle makes more than just the .50 cal model.

Captain- I recommend looking into the other Katana-style mags available that are 3D printed- the KaThanha mag (www.thingiverse.com/thing:3069519) and the Katobu mag (www.thingiverse.com/thing:3086980). The designer of the latter even has a version intended specifically for the Pigeon- the Pigeon Pecker (www.thingiverse.com/thing:3185023).

I'm still really torn about this one... My nerd side loves it and wants one, but the cynical and pessimistic parts of me are dreadfully worried about the realistic size and shape. Color doesn't mean as much as many in our hobby try to make ourselves believe; it's not at all hard, or very expensive, to get a real firearm custom colored. I know one person with two colored Glocks; I can never keep the model numbers straight, but they're both chambered for 9mm, one is a full size frame and the other is the compact size. The full size is Blaze Orange, the compact is in a kind of olive drab looking color. I'm not the only one worried about the similarity, either. There are a few cops who come to our local games, one who plays with his kids and two more that are volunteers to observe while in uniform if they're available just for safety reasons. Since it was released the Dessert Pidgeon has come up in conversations a few times, and it makes all three of them nervous, too.

I don't think that you're strictly wrong about any of those points... but the problem is that any number of nerf blasters, released by hasbro, will look like a real firearm if painted in those sorts of colors. I opted to follow firearm shapes and designs here because the function is similar (holsterability, compact size, battery placement in front) and so it does have a more realistic profile than a number of hasbro blasters. But again, if you painted a magnus, or a kronos black... that's just as dangerous, and the problem is that there's no accounting for the bystander that might have a problem with it knowing the difference. It's gun shaped, so they assume it's a gun. If it's bright pink or orange, there's a much better chance they'll think it's a toy

Like I said, I'm torn. I fully see both of these views, and have read and observed many others discussing the issue- not just on the *D.P.* , but general talk on how realistic is "too much" for the hobby. Personally, I think the matter is underplayed a bit too much for comfort among the community as a whole, at least in the USA, given the hyper-sensitized state of most communities due to the several highly publicized multiple-shooting and/or mass-shooting incidents in recent years. My concerns are less for someone being thought to wield a real firearm and thus being injured (though, obviously, this is a real and scary enough concern) and more for how outsiders will view and speak of the hobby. I feel this is, potentially, a highly significant issue for Nerfers as a community, given the hyper-reactionary socially active nature of this country. Uninformed speculation, misinformation, and personal prejudice being reported as truth is a real and all too common an occurrence, even in otherwise harmless subjects; one need only look up the so-called "Satanic Panic" of the late 1970's and early 1980's and how it almost destroyed the pen-and-paper tabletop fantasy game genre (games like 'Dungeons & Dragons' and 'Dragonlance') before they ever got off the ground, or the religious and political movements against both rap music and video games "corrupting the youth of the nation" during the early 1990's to see clear examples of how bad it could get. Those were decades ago, in a world where we lived in a substantially less thorough and slower news cycle. Consider how now, quite quickly a simple Twitter post can cost someone a career, or a few moments of out-of-context cell phone footage going viral cause a class-action lawsuit. Not that I have a solution, or even a suggestion towards one... About all we really can do is push the best of our community to the forefront as examples of what we want our community to be... People like The Cap'n. :D
