    I'm a bit late to the Ground Zeroes party and it seems that every type of speedrun/challenge run has already been done several times over. The only run I couldn't find on KZread was for Eliminate The Renegade Threat mission with extraction of both targets without the use of weapons -- so here it is.

Dishonored, Hitman, and let's not forget WhistleSlide in SC Blacklist ;D Seems like there's almost always a way to do that. Phantom Pain is a game that I'm very interested in as well. It looks pretty systemic, which means even the devs aren't exactly sure of the creativity players can demonstrate in its engine. I hope that's as true in the full game as it has been in the promo video demos they've showed. About TPP and MGS in general, be mindful though that we're talking about a series that NEVER tried to be realistic. Now I know that it isn't the best of excuse, but I think this applies to the next game as well. Tricking the guards into thinking you're a hot woman when wearing a box with a model painted on it is pretty self explanatory, no to mention the Fulton system. watch?v=1MpmPSUJG5I The point is, judging the game for its realism isn't he best course of action here: I think it would be better to seek the challenge within the gameplay and its own rules and A.I. Ultimately, it's all about having fun.

    1) I never said that I have a problem with some of sillier elements like fulton or cardboard boxes. This issue never even came up in my discussion of GZ here and it is not why I was criticizing it. *Every* game works according to its own unique set of rules, with its own unique quirks. It is not something exclusive to MGS, and these little quirks shouldn't stop us from comparing the rules of different games to each other. 2) You have to understand that the word "realistic" does not mean "identical to real life". The technology is nowhere near that yet, so it would be foolish of me to ask GZ to achieve that. Realistic simply means "trying to imitate real life in certain aspects". See the distinction? In this sense all MGS games are as realistic as they come, so once again, they are not exempt from criticism. I don't need GZ to imitate real life with 100% accuracy. I only need its rules governing the AI to be interesting. And the reason I do not find them interesting because I've already played stealth games with more complex rules. It just so happens that ALL of them were trying to make THEIR rules as realistic as they could. That's why I judge GZ based on the similar criteria. Of course, it is totally possible to make a complex game without trying to copy reality one-for-one - you can do it by using your imagination and setting the game in a fantasy or sci-fi world, populated with fantastic creatures. But GZ is not that kind of game: it is set in a highly realistic world with some mild sci-fi elements (just like most other games I've been comparing it to), where all main characters and enemies are humans. And if you want to have a complex stealth game with human enemies you have to make them behave like real-life humans. Which is where GZ fails. What you said here - "would be better to seek the challenge within the gameplay and its own rules and A.I" - doesn't make any sense. We *always* seek challenge in the game's rules. You either play by the game's rules or you don't. It's impossible to find challenge anywhere else in the game. And trust me, I tried to find challenge in GZ. What I've found was that it could be made challenging only if you play it in certain ways (like when you try to go for S-rank or play it without using weapons, as I did here) but these were not very interesting _kinds_ of challenge. I've seen better. Oh, and about "fun": the more complex the game gets, the more interesting it becomes. And more interesting = more fun. That's how you get games that are more fun - by making them more complex. Your suggestion for making it "fun" by burying my head in the sand and forgetting about my earlier experiences with far superior games won't work for me, I'm afraid. 3) With that said, you cannot expect me NOT to judge the game on its realism when every single aspect of the game strives to be realistic. Even the game designers themselves would've disagreed with you on your assertion that "judging the game for its realism isn't the best course of action". They definitely wanted us to do that! Just look: the graphics in the game are trying to be realistic (because the game uses photo-based textures and runs at smooth 60 fps on modern systems), the physics are realistic, the intricate level design makes Camp Omega feel like an actual place, the characters are life-like (because they are well-animated and use more polygons for their models - if you played Deja Vu mission you can even hear the game boast about it by comparing the polygon counts of the MGS games), the narrative deals with topical issues (like black sites and torture) and portrays deep, strong emotions. Why do you suddenly expect me to give the *game mechanics* a pass? After all, mechanics (or "rules") are the most important part of the game and they are what we should be judging it by first and foremost. So my main objection to GZ still stands: its game mechanics - and especially its AI - are obsolete and do not match the level of quality of every other aspect of the game. They would have been barely acceptable 8 years ago, never mind in 2015, after all the advancements made by games like Crysis, Blacklist and Absolution. For a stealth game, and especially for a game belonging to a legendary and revolutionary stealth series, this is very disappointing. THAT is what makes me concerned for TPP, not the cardboard boxes painted with hot women. 4) All your post says to me is that you love MGS games and want everyone else to love them as much as you do. Unfortunately, for me, as someone who has been playing stealth games for 10 years, the stuff that GZ offers is not enough. And you won't convince me otherwise just by asking to "have fun". I don't know if anything here will sound offensive to you, but believe me, there was no offense intended. I just explain things like I see them.

    ***** Thanks for the in-depth answer. By reading your previous comments, I thought you were really disappointed by some of the game's aspects not being realistic enough, which prevented the "fun" (like when you where talking about the guards' reaction time). To me it sounded like "it's not realistic enough, so it's bad". Sorry if I misinterpreted that. I do believe the game has some issues as well: auto cover is clumsy, the unintuitive button mapping, the fact that guards will dive if you try to run over them when driving without raising any alarm of sorts. To be fair, every MGS game was incredibly realistic when they came out in terms of graphics and overall presentation, however this was by no means the same for the gameplay. GZ is not that different. It certainly doesn't feel like your usual MGS game, but it is nonetheless surreal in some situations. For instance, when you hold up a guard and force him to lay on the ground, they'll stay like that for good, unless you go into alert mode (or someone sees them). That's not realistic, it's a recurring feature in the series since MGS3; if this game was really trying to be realistic, they wouldn't have included it. In the previous games, you could distract guards with adult magazines and basically remove from the equation for a couple minutes. In the previous games you could do a roll attack on the enemies to put them off balance, something you can do here as well with the dive action. Again, not very realistic In the TPP trailers, you can make your horse poop and use that to have the guards drive off the road (much like the banana peel in Mario Kart games). Other examples would be the unlimited empty magazines, the miraculous first aid spray, the regenerating health. I think many people tend to project the visual fidelity on the gameplay. Believe me, the realism of the saga lies in the themes of the story, not the gameplay. Not even the story iteslf is meant to be realistic in many ways. In comparison, while in the Splinter Cell games you usually have a generic conspiracy/ terrorist attack to stop, in MGS you have flying guys that can read you mind, immortal vampire looking dudes, electricticity wielding russian colonels. In TPP there's this Quiet chick who can turn invisible and move at lightning speed. However, the themes in each game are incredibly deep and well presented to the player, which is why Kojima is highly regarded more as a story teller than as a stealth game designer (although he pretty much invented the genre back in '87, so credit where it's due :)) To sum up, MGS always does this juxtaposition both in the story and gameplay mechanics of realistic elements and "cheesy" stuff. Of course it's not exempt from criticism, but I think it's should be judged considering where it comes from and what it wants to do. As a side note, considering the game is on PC and mods are already spreading, what aspects of the game would you change in order to make it more interesting to play?

    PlayRough089 Thanks a lot for the level-headed response! The unique perspective of a long-time MGS fan is actually what I wanted to learn about when I started my discussion with Covert Gamer, but unfortunately that didn't turn out so well. I think I see now that the discrepancy between our positions is caused by the fact that you mostly prefer Japanese games and culture (I don't know if you are from Japan yourself, I just got that impression by checking your profile, so forgive me if I'm wrong), while I grew up playing western games exclusively - and THEY take themselves VERY seriously. They *may* have humor and silliness in them but it is almost always conveyed through the narrative, not the game mechanics. Of course, western games still have tons of unrealistic and illogical conventions in them, but they almost never bring attention to that. And as a general rule, western developers are usually trying to minimize the number of things that take you out of the game and remind you that you're playing it. Internal consistency and the pursuit of balance between how the game looks (graphics), plays (rules) and how it tells its story are very important values. That's what I'm used to. And to be honest, personally, the story is the last thing I care about in a videogame. When it's good and well-written, that's great. When it's bad, I just ignore it. But, with a few exceptions, it almost never influences my opinion of a game. So it seems to me like there are deeply ingrained cultural differences between us and that's why our evaluations of MGS are so different. Not much can be done about that -- but it's always fun to explore a new point of view. * * * If you're curious to hear more from my _western_ perspective, I provided a couple of more criticisms. I don't know how useful to you they'll be, but here goes: *About soldiers' reaction time*: this is actually a good example where being unrealistic hurts the game and that complaint you mentioned WAS, in fact, criticizing it for being unrealistic. For me this does take me out of the game and sabotages what the game tried to achieve with its graphics and story. The more that kind of thing happens the less I think of enemies in the game as real human soldiers and the less I care about them. Which makes interactions with them less interesting. And most importantly, the 0-second reaction time is what probably led to game being easier than it could have been - despite that on the surface it appears as if it makes the game more challenging. This is a fine point, so I'll repeat it again: hiding in cardboard boxes and using horse poop as a banana peel is not very realistic, but they give you more options with how to play the game - hence they make the game complex and interesting, which makes them *good*. I can forgive them for being *silly* because they make the game more complex (=fun). The extremely fast reaction time does not make the game more fun. It makes the close quarter stealth *less complex* and more *boring*, because you always have to either play it extremely safe around guards or simply hold them up and tell them to lie down, which is super-easy to do in GZ. You can't do any of the insane close-quarter stuff from Hitman and Splinter Cell games. It is hard to take any risks with the guards without being spotted (unless you replay the level several times to get everything right like I did here, but that's another story). For me that is bad, because stealth games are all about taking interesting risks. At least that's why *I* play them. Don't know about others. Besides, the game developers were most likely aware of this problem and that's why they were forced to introduce such element as a Reflex mode to help the players deal with an instant detection at close ranges - and it didn't make the game any better. _To reiterate, when it comes to game's _*_rules_*_:_ Realistic = good, if the game tries to be realistic in its every other aspect. Unrealistic = bad, when it makes the game less complex AND takes you out of the game. Unrealistic = good, but ONLY if it makes the game more interesting by making it more complex. *>>For instance, when you hold up a guard and force him to lay on the ground, they'll stay like that for good, unless you go into alert mode (or someone sees them). That's not realistic, it's a recurring feature in the series since MGS3; if this game was really trying to be realistic, they wouldn't have included it.* The fact that you can hold up a guard at gunpoint and tell him to lay down IS realistic. It is a very believable scenario. Only the fact that he will lay down *indefinitely* until someone helps him up or he hears an alarm is unrealistic. And you should be able to understand by now why I think it's bad - because it makes the game easier and less complex. If you had to worry about soldiers standing up on their own when you are not around it'd have been a lot harder to cheat this system. As it works now in GZ, when you tell them to lie down, the guards more or less act as if they were tranquilized. It's not that hard to catch several soldiers in one area unaware one-by-one and neutralize them without expending valuable tranquilizer ammo. Most importantly, if it didn't work like this it would make the guard appear more like actual trained soldiers and less like idiots. Because where is the joy in outsmarting and defeating idiots? Another clear example of why unrealistic = bad in a realistic game. To me, at least ;) *>>Of course it's not exempt from criticism, but I think it's should be judged considering where it comes from and what it wants to do.* Well, it's my first MGS game, so I judge it by comparing to all the other games I've played. And to me GZ looks like it wants to be a realistic and modern stealth game that tries to appeal to western sensibilities, but fails. If you played every MGS game, grew up with them and have a strong attachment to them after all these years, then I guess your judgment will be different. I didn't, so that's why I rate it poorly. Well, not THAT poorly, since it's my favorite stealth game of 2014, but still. *>>As a side note, considering the game is on PC and mods are already spreading, what aspects of the game would you change in order to make it more interesting to play?* I'm not a game designer, so I don't really know. I can say what works for me or don't, because I played a lot of games, but I have no experience in the game-making field. From my amateur point of view, it seems that the game needs a redesign from the ground up and a new AI system. As I said in one of my previous posts: "What GZ and TPP need, at the very least, is the perception system like in Human Revolution or Crysis, where the speed of detection changes proportionally to both distance and the % of the body exposed. This would allow the game to avoid issues with detection that I talked about and would make hiding in foliage or behind semi-transparent objects feel intuitive." Programming that stuff would be a full-time job for more than one person. It also needs to get rid of unlimited resources (like Reflex) and unlimited timers (like when you tell soldiers to lay down). But once you change _that_ you have to change the design of a lot of other things and balancing that mess is a tough task (you'll need to think of a way to recharge the Reflex meter or restock on empty magazines, for starters). I'm afraid there is nothing that can be done just by tweaking a couple of variables :( Anyway, thanks again for the talk! I hope I'll have some videos on my channel that may interest you when TPP comes out.

    ***** That was fantastic, prenatual. I just came back to this video because I got a Google Chrome extension ("Turn Off The Lights") and decided to test it on THIS video :) I hope that when Phantom Pain releases, there's more in the game that will balance out some of these aspects. Right now, the main reason I look forward to Phantom Pain is the feeling of options the player has. It seems like it will be a more systemic, or system-based game rather than one with full scripting. I like that. Speaking of systemic games, I'm also replaying Thief 1 on PC right now. It's... Very tense. Sometimes I forget to breathe. I don't really get that with a lot of games.

    Hey prenatual, really enjoy the work you do, love the vids, and look forward to your next ones! Seeing as E3 has come and gone, what are your thoughts on the new reveals and info? Dishonored 2, with Emily and Corvo as playable protags. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Hitman, less emphasis on story compared to Absolution and being a digital episodic release title, with the game being updated every few months with new contracts and stuff. Any other games you saw that you liked? Non-stealth ones?

But I'm sure it will be great. As for non-stealth games, I'm really looking forward to new Mirror's Edge and Fallout 4.

    Batman Fanatic Well, it's not like I did all this without any preparation. The first time I tried extracting the targets it also took me 30+ minutes. So you did fine :) And yeah, of course I'm excited for the next Hitman. The developers promised that it's going to have Absolution's graphics and AI + large non-linear levels like in Blood Money, which sounds pretty cool to me.

There are 4 stealth games to be released in 2015 (besides TPP) that I'm currently interested in: -Batman: Arkham Knight -Invisible Inc. -Routine -Volume Speaking of videogames in general, I'm also looking forward to these: -Pillars of Eternity -Witcher 3 -Dying Light -Carmageddon: Reincarnation -Sid Meier's Starships -Galactic Civilizations 3

    Batman Fanatic I played the story campaign for several hours (haven't tried Survival mode). I thought it was great as a horror game, but bad as a stealth game. Impressive graphics and sound design, but everything else is very so-so. Sneaking past humans and androids is too easy, while alien is too unpredictable and random to be interesting.

    Have you ever thought about playing or played Splinter Cell Conviction?

  • @francispersona4186

    It's been a while since I've last seen one of your videos, and I'm always impressed by the amount of preparation, skill, and forethought that you're able to put into your stealth. I can't imagine how much time it would take to achieve this level of near perfection, the hours that you put into understanding how the AI works. As such, I wanted to ask you for your opinion on the stealth mechanics of the Splinter Cell games. I've only played Blacklist, and found it to be quite good due to the options that the open-ended level design (in some missions at least) gave me as well as the gadgets and tools I was given access to (although some are more useful than others for fast-paced stealth). Do you like the Splinter Cell games and the way that they approach stealth? I know that you're the sort of person who tends towards fast-paced stealth with high risk and high reward, but what are the sorts of mechanics and design decisions that you appreciate in general for stealth games? - I await your answer with bated breath =)

  • @prenatual

    @prenatual

    Francis Persona Sorry, I don't have much time to answer your question in depth right now, so I'll be brief. My favorite SC game is CT. I absolutely love its cautious and methodical stealth. The levels and AI were designed appropriately for it, so I never really minded the slow pace. Plus, it fits the main character very well, who is supposed to be a 50 year old grizzled veteran. OCP and the noise concealment mechanic were also very interesting. Blacklist is great if you go for Ghost+Undisturbed style. I can't say I liked that it moved the emphasis from hiding in shadows to climbing though, because it made it feel too much like an Assassin's Creed game. And it's too damn easy if you play it like a third person shooter, especially if you stop worrying about points or adhering to a specific playstyle and use all available gadgets and weapons. The first two games are obsolete at this point. Too linear and too scripted. Can't comment on Double Agent because I played it a while ago and don't remember much about it. Conviction is a fun but pretty easy shooter (just like Blacklist). You can try to play it like a stealth game, but it can be stupidly difficult (in a non-fun way) at times, if you want to do it with no detection and minimum amount of kills.

    Hey prenatual, I think I have a challenge idea in mind: playing a speedrun of the Blacklist campaign while wearing sonar goggles the whole time, on Perfectionist difficulty. Привет, Пренни! Ох, уж этот МГС))) На первый взгляд очень смешная в плане стелса игра. Может я ошибаюсь? Продолжение будет?

  • @prenatual

    @prenatual

    9 жыл бұрын

    TheMidavchik Продолжение будет после выхода Phantom Pain. Когда выйдет -- пока не изестно. А стелс в игре и правда довольно примитивный и не особо оригинальный. Во многом напоминает Death to Spies, только качеством повыше. Впрочем, если проходить миссии по одному разу, то стелс может показаться весьма неплохим. Рекомендую попробовать, если еще не играл.

  • @prenatual

    @prenatual

    9 жыл бұрын

    Nath Gilt Я уже подробно расписал в своих комментариях в чем именно заключается "примитивность", поэтому повторю кратко: 1) крайне старомодная бинарная система обнаружения с идиотскими правилами, где, среди многих прочих недостатков, тебя замечают мгновенно на растоянии менее 30 метров независимо от процента видимости тела (торчит чья-та коленка из-за угла? мгновенная тревога на всей базе); 2) реакции со стороны противников чрезвычайно заторможенные и легко обыгрывается в пользу игрока -- я в одном из комментариев привел длинный список, где по пунктам указал, в чем именно AI в GZ хуже чем AI в Absolution в аналогичных ситуациях; 3) количество гаджетов не идет ни в какое сравнение с Blacklist или с любой другой игрой из серии Splinter Cell. Гаджетов, ориентированный на стелс, только два -- бесконечный запас магазинов и дымовые гранаты, которые еще и искать надо. В том что касается набора возможностей, GZ на 95% идентична первому Crysis, а Crysis -- это чистый шутер, без всяких претензий на легендарность стелса. 4) бесконечный рефлекс и неограниченная маркировка противников с подсветкой через стены. Обсуждать TPP будем тогда, когда она выйдет, и она действительно может оказаться лучшей стелс игрой всех времен и народов, но вот то, что представлено в GZ -- это курам на смех. "Комплексной" игра может показаться только тем, кто ничего сложнее Assassin's Creed в жизни не играл. А то, что в игре ползать можно, так это такой же минус как и плюс, учитывая, как коряво это сделано (перешел в лежачее положение = стал невидимым для всех противников дальше 30 метров, даже посреди бела дня).

  • @prenatual

    @prenatual

    9 жыл бұрын

    Nath Gilt 1) Я имел ввиду *другие* комментарии к данному видео -- в ответах Covert и PlayRough089 я все объяснил на два раза с картинками и примерами. И акцент в моем ответе тебе я делал не на том, что слишком быстро поднимается тревога на базе, а на том, что на ближних дистанциях (>30м) тебя замечают мгновенно -- *независимо от процента видимости тела*, как я уже сказал. С другой стороны, на расстояниях более 30 метров противнику требуется *10 секунд*, чтобы среагировать на игрока и пойти проверять его позицию. Дисбаланс сложности полнейший. 2) Противникам в GZ требуется где-то в полтора раза больше времени (по сравнению с Blacklist и Absolution) чтобы среагировать на событие, завершить его проверку и вернуться на место патруля. Плюс, в игре присутствует бесконечное количество предметов инвентаря (чего ни Blacklist и Absolution не было), что в итоге делает задачу отвлечения противников элементарной. То же касается скорости реакции -- противники в указанных играх оборачиваются намного быстрее, когда слышат шумы. 3) Огнестрельное оружие под категорию гаджетов не попадает -- иначе GZ тут проиграет даже первому Хитману, где оружия было в разы больше. Гаджеты в стелс играх -- средства для манипулирования и нестандартной нейтрализации противников. Если подобных средств и игре нет, и если игра никаких интересных механик не предлагает (смены маскировки, как в Хитмане, или укрывания в тенях, как в Splinter Cell или Thief), то играть в игру *как в стелс* становится попросту неинтересно. Что тут непонятного? "Песочница" в GZ -- полупустая, и играть в такой песочнице может быть интересно только тем, кто никогда не пробовал качественные игры. А перл, о том что смысл оружия "прежде всего не в убийстве ИИ а в уничтожении бочек или лампочек" -- глупость несусветная. Ну да, а нос человеку дан чтобы носить очки. Еще какие гениальные мысли есть? 4) Мне нет никакого дела до проблем разработчиков и исторических бэкграундов. Я анализирую только то, что происходит передо мной на экране во время игры, а не чьи-то влажные фантазии. Если даже на высшей сложности игра делают задачу отслеживания противников слишком простой, то это большой минус, и никакие отмазки тут не помогут. Маркеры в Crysis и Far Cry простительны, потому что эти игры во-первых, являются шутерами с легкими элементами стелса, и во-вторых, на порядок сложнее GZ. Даже если ты знаешь положение всех врагов, тебя все равно могут убить за полсекунды, в отличии от GZ с супер-быстрой регенерацией здоровья и криворукими противниками, которые с 20 метров по игроку попасть не могут. Что касается специализированных стелс игр, где есть рентгеновское зрение сквозь стены (Absolution и Thief), это зрение становится доступным только при активации спец режима и питается ограниченным ресурсом. А в Blacklist и Conviction, где присутствует метки, их количество ограничено, и они не показывают ориентацию противника сквозь стены. Строить стратегию и тактику это не мешает. 5) Темно-синий костюм на фоне светло-серого асфальта, светло-коричневой земли и зеленой листвы при ярком дневном освещении должен быть прекрасно виден всем, кто не страдает дальтонизмом и близорукостью в тяжелой форме. Тот факт, что тренированные американские солдаты не способны заметить ползущий по земле темный силуэт на растоянии более 30 метров -- это просто смехотворно. И раз ты упомянул Far Cry, то там дальность зрения у обычных противников была более 100 метров, а у снайперов более 300 метров: если ты мог видеть противника, то он мог видеть тебя. Все по-честному, а не казуальное позорище, как в GZ. Замечание о том, что "сделать открытую игру с тремя позициями очень сложно" -- очередная глупость. Ничего сложного в этом нет -- тот же Far Cry это проделал идеально с первой попытки в 2004 году. На данный комментарий можешь не отвечать. Из твоих реплик я понял, что ты один из тех квази-религиозных фанатиков, которые полностью неспособны видеть недостатки предмета своего обожания и которые с пеной у рта будут доказывать что черное -- это белое, даже после того, как их ткнешь носом в очевидные факты. Я тут уже потратил три дня на одного такого долбоеба, так что давай-ка я тебя лучше забаню и сэкономлю себе время и нервные клетки. Если тебе хочется пофлудить о божественности и недосягаемости MGS, найди себе другое место.
