About the album art discussion, it’s actually a piece made by artist john baldessari in 2006, it wasn’t commissioned for this album specifically

I loved this episode, I hadn’t spent too much time with MGMT previously, mostly just little dark age. But this album was really good, I mentioned on the Spotify Q&A that yall should try listening to the album in reverse order cause it has such a different feel and is so good! (Normal order is still super amazing but personally reverse order was just something else) Also, if y’all ever need a rec for an album (which I doubt since there’s so much good music and new stuff is posted regularly), I would 100% recommend listening to angel in realtime. by Gang of Youths. It’s such an emotionally charged album with really beautiful writing. It’s got a decent number of religious undertones, but they kind of just help play into the feeling of loss and finding closure and hope that the album explores. Really beautiful work that I think y’all would enjoy and a ton of stuff to delve into with the backstory and material in the lyrics and instrumentation!

That opener feels more and more intriguing as I look into it. The old Welsh poem is introducing the audience member to the bard Taliesin. To make it old-timey, they are a travelled bard sharing their wealth of knowledge with a curious audience, if only for a time until they need to pack their bags and move to the next village. The "child-like wonder" you two were talking about wasn't something I noticed on my listen tbh but I find that interesting to think about. It reminds me of my grandmother and her attitude when it came to sharing her experiences with others, at least in her excitedness to communicate experiences and memories. One interesting detail about the poem is that it's written by an anonymous author, whose name was lost to time. Their poem lives on, though.

the beautiful thing about the message of the poem is its simplicity, really its just love but you don't fully understand that until the cycle is over at least once. It's message works to explain why MGMT might feel such angst and sorrow over certain plights in their experience that lead them to existential and frightening realizations at times, but simultaneously that very same ethos explains why they feel the need to share the highs and lows of their lives with others despite their cynical mannerism towards existence. For example what Alex picked up on (didn't realize this either until you pointed it out) with their portrayal of parenthood as seemingly a hassle "I wish I was joking lawl," but simultaneously deciding to make a song out of such a silly thing. A reason to be is a torturous thing to MGMT it seems, if it wasn't so meaningful. Perhaps I'm barking up the wrong tree here but I like interpreting it that way. It makes the Part 2 thing make a bit of sense to me; the second part of Loss of Life is a new beginning, a beginning that feels just a bit more hopeful and nurturing as you begin the Loss of Life again.

great episode, skaters! speaking of "Loss of Life", you should check out death (get it? LOL!) metal Dying Fetus' 2023 album "Make Them Beg For Death"! It also talks about topics such as death, and ermmmmm death and uhhhhh ah carp i dont frickin know but its good album!

Ngl, I tuned into the album because of that feature and I enjoyed visuals a lot more 😅. I feel like lower bpm makes the album bleak (compared to LDA), but I loved it lyrically, instrumental solos are beautiful and it still has satire that people keep coming back to since OS (even matured a little). It's kinda silly to write an album about life and death cycle right when your band member becomes parent, but I get that, we need unique perspective. Dancing in Babylon reminded me of Les adorables étoiles a little bit with retro sound and was surprised Chris wasn't in credits. The song is really cute tho. And speaking of Charli, I think Gone with him, imo, is a remarkable song that defines 2020s pop sound like Bad Romance did 2010s

MGMT story I tell often, and I hope they've grown up since, but before their first album my friend put on an indie show in NYC and booked MGMT when they were called The Management. No band, just them and an IPod. They were first on a four or five band line up. When they finished playing they smashed a durian on stage and cleared the entire room, due to the smell, ruining the concert for every other band. Whenever I hear that OS is saterizing the indie scene I think of how they were acting just as immature back then. That being said I really dig Little Dark Age and Loss Of Life.
