MG3 hybrid Kerb weight is 1685kg so it's fairly close to a large EV Crossover/SUV such as the Tesla Model Y which is 1985kg kerb. The Model Y is significantly larger and has way more space and power. MG3 is actually 260kg heavier than a Corolla hatch hybrid @1410kg

TBH, I was really expecting MUCH, MUCH MORE by way of fuel economy from the MG3 Hybrid+. It's becoming clear now from all the various reviews that are emerging, that the claimed 64 mpg is strictly for the birds & 55 mpg is sort of where reality lies. It strikes me that any gains the MG3 designers hoped to make from all the clever tech they've installed have been negated by the (considerable!) extra weight said tech adds to the vehicle. The real life fuel economy of the new Suzuki Swift is comparable to that of the MG3. It's far less 'clever' but it is 350 kg lighter & that matters!

I went inside the new MG3 Hybrid+ in my local showroom; pretty well equipped and for me doesn’t feel cheap. However, I don’t like the fact that it doesn’t have split-folding rear seats unlike the outgoing MG3 (which wasn’t available in Ireland).

I agree about the new MG3 being well equipped especially on trophy trim and does not feel cheap at all..in fact the infotainment screen has been improved over the MG4 one apparently. Thank you for this comprehensive review. There was a comparison between swift and mg3 on the "what car" channel. Interestingly, the new swift consumes less fuel. Probably because it is lighter, but shouldn't we expect better fuel efficiency from a full hybrid car? They even found the new swift more successful in many ways. What is your general opinion?

Prices of MG3 across EU starts at 19990 EUR. MG4 starts at 30990. ZS is now even cheaper ...16490 in Germany and i think it's best valeue for money car in EU. HS starts at 22900 EUR. It would be epic if they could offer MG3 with that basic 1.5L engine from ZS with starting price arround 13-14000 EUR since all cars in that class (Clio, Fabia, Corsa) are now extremly overpriced.

I have a feeling they will have to discount this for it to sell well to UK customers as the Cloi will give it a good run for the money as will the Swift just the use of a 3 speed Auto I find a trifle baffling whats it like trying to drive enthusiastically? What might save it is the limited competition but other Chinese brands might step into the market yet.

Another great review, so please note this comment is about MG only! The reason this is ‘so cheap’ (at 23k!) in comparison is because China offers state-supported subsidies to advantage their manufacturers over established brands. These ‘advantages’ include below-market credit, tax cuts by local (to China) regional governments, and preferential rates on land leases. The EU is investigating these due to concerns about state-level unfair advantages.

Not all hybrids are built the same, Toyota's patent protected eCVTs are hard to beat But then again, the last few years for Toyota's lineup such as the Yaris, Yaris Cross, CHR, Prius etc are seriously faff beyond measure. What's rhe point in making a more efficient, updated drivetrain only to negate the gains with needless posh items, larger and wider wheels and/or SUV styling? Just for profit?

Great review as always Mark. I really want to like this car....why? Because its a hatchback, not a SUV. Because its a hybrid, not a 2 tonne plus EV. But I can't like it because its Chinese, a country with a lousy human rights record, who are flooding Europe with cheap cars with questionable build quality, questionable spare parts back up and what will happen if a trade/real war ever breaks out between the west and China? Where will you get your spare parts? If this was a European car, I'd hope it would sell like hot cakes but because of where it is from, they can keep it.......and judging by the thousands of unsold MGs stockpiled at European ports, it looks like many other buyers feel the same.
