MG Rover K Series VVC Timing Check and Fix - Stuck at Only 5500rpm max?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

If the VVC system on the MG Rover K series engine is not setup correctly or has a fault then the engine is limited to only 5500 rpm instead of over 7000 rpm. In this video the VVC operation is checked which involves checking the VVC timing, cam timing, HDU operation and VVC solenoid checks and fixes.
After doing all this (and also buying a cheap, £12 OBDII scanner to use with an iphone and finding a temperature sensor had gone) the engine was back to operating at 7000 rpm again.

    hello great video, i have 1.8 vvc in a rover 200. i have an oil leak coming from the hydraulic control unit, the leak is between the base plate and upper housing, is it possible to replace this seal without messing around with the cam timing and removing rocker cover?

  • @comeinhandynow

    +Kruger Kruger Thanks. Since you will have to remove the vvc control unit (hcu) then there is the danger that it will move one cog when putting it back in, so you will have to check that the vvc timing hasn't changed by checking for correct alignment, as shown in the video.

    ah ok, thanks for your reply, if i decide to do this myself it be my 1st time removing a cam belt cover and rocker cover, would i need to drain the oil from the engine?

    My idle is 2500 rev when hot. If i turn it off and on its fine for a minute. How do i dissable vvc?

    I doubt your engine idling at 2500rpm is due to the VVC system. More like a problem with the IAC valve or you have an air leak into the inlet manifold. There is no reason to disable the VVC.

    Cracking engines, but if you have problems don't waste time trying to locate it yourself, go and have put on a T4, that will diagnose it correctly within 5 minutes, then you can decide whether you wish to sort the problems out yourself. Plenty of ex MG/Rover garages still have these diagnostic machines.

    Yes they are. I am sure a T4 diagnosis is good, but my videos are all about doing it yourself and DIYers would not normally have the T4 software and hardware.

    Just be careful not to over tighten those cam cover bolts, they are small and all to easy to sheer off if hand tightening with lost of pressure. The Haynes manual is useful for torque settings amongst other things.

    Hello, I'm trying to do the same but the VVC piston (shaft) is stuck, the only way to make it move a bit is by rotating cam gears. How did you get it out?

  • @comeinhandynow

    @comeinhandynow

    You’ll see in the video from about 5m50s onwards that I had the same difficulty with a very stiff VLC control arm. Remove the end belt so that you can rotate the camshaft to a position where no valves are depressed and the control shaft and hence VVC piston/shaft should move a lot easier.

  • @TheIKAIKAIKA

    @@comeinhandynow I did exactly that, and it moved slightly up and down, but I was not able to get it out.

    It’s hard to help without seeing it, but I would suggest removing the VVC solenoid housing and levering the piston and VVC control shaft out of its hole whilst at the same time rotating the camshaft back and forth or round and round in order to relieve pressure on the arm.
