I think A is FF, B is m43 - judging from DoF. I actually find B more pleasing, but this could be the slightly warmer skin tones. Some, like @MarkusPix, even tell people that using log isn't necessary (and I think he even shows it in one of his videos). There are much more important aspects - like lighting, as you've already mentioned. 😉

Yes, you guessed correctly, DoF it's giving it away a bit. It's also LOG on OM-5 but with baked in LUT. So zero changes in post. I guess there are also other pleasing picture profiles on this camera, but I haven't tried them too much. Generally lighting is what matters, I learned this hard way buying expensive cameras first then good lights :D. If other way around maybe I wouldn't buy some of them (cameras).

Log isn’t *necessary*, but it protects the work in case anything is off or the client wants changes. Of course we got by without it when it didn’t exist, but the work to come out of log is trivial, even in premiere or other NLEs that are feature-poor for color grading. For the moment i haven’t encountered a use case where I would *want* to turn off log, so it’s always on

@@The_CGA I'm using log on Sony everytime, yet I try to expose correctly anyway. But there is one exception. For video call I use Cine2 profile. It looks really good straight from the camera.

The OM video is indeed “good enough” for interior shooting to the point it can absolutely pass vs. full frame The bigger surprise for me is the color quality of the OM, the skin tones and the depth overall are excellent. As for depth of field, the truth is nobody (in the audience) cares. If the shot is composed then it’s almost *better* to have everything sharp on frame anyway to avoid the possibility of autofocus missing. Besides, for the time being most folks were brought up on TV cameras which barely had any DOF, and phone footage likewise.

OM5 is actually sometimes problematic. Since it's only 8bit and just 100Mbps code it sometimes falls apart unfortunately compared to 10bit from Sony. But with good lighting conditions it's really OK. And I rarely shoot video on aperture lower than F2.8, but YT is crazy about shallow DoF ...

Left looks full frame, right/head on looks M4/3 to me, tho they both look grat. What lenses were used and at what aperture?

  • @JoATTech

@northofbrandon Your are right. I guess the zoomed out footage gives it away. M43 is OM5 + Olympus 17mm, so in theory 34mm FOV, but I turned on electronic stabilization to have tighter crop. So final crop is something around 2.38. So FoV is ~40mm. I used F1.8 aperture on OM5 so in full frame terms DoF is something like F4 (4.2). Sony is just 35mm F1.8@F2.8, but the camera is a bit closer so frame seems tighter. And since it's closer DoF is shallower (apart of actually shallower DoF based on theoretical F-stop :D). Hope it makes sense :D

@@JoATTech I guessed the same from the depth of field. The A-footage is getting out of focus around the ears and the B footage looked like it had more focus all around the head.

  • @JoATTech

@@gmaas1418 I could also set FF to F4 and use F1.2 lens on M43 :D. But I wasn't that sneaky and I do not have any F1.2 lens for M43 :D. So yes DoF is a revealing factor. Kinda funny thing is that F2.8 seems to be a sweet spot for talking head to separate the body from the background. Anything with shallower DoF does not separate that good, since as you pointed out whole body is not sharp, due to shallow DoF. FF shot here is kinda close that even F2.8 does not keep my whole head in the focus plain.

@@JoATTech was more looking at depth of field! The m4/3 had a lovely depth and your nose, ear, shoulders, everything in focus. Color wise, no problem at all from either
