MFSB - Mysteries Of The World
Old school classic from 1980 with a great bassline.
MFSB, officially standing for "Mother Father Sister Brother" was a pool of more than 30 studio musicians based at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios, home of the Philadelphia International Records label. They were the originators of the signature smooth "Philly sound" that dominated the early 1970s. They worked closely with the production team of Gamble and Huff and producer/arranger Thom Bell, and backed up such groups as Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O’Jays, the Stylistics, the Spinners, Wilson Pickett, and Billy Paul.
It was the 1972 release of their first album, MFSB, that put them on the map. This marked the beginning of a string of instrumental hits (the theme music for the TV show Soul Train being one) that brought major attention to a large orchestra who laid the foundation for The Sound of Philadelphia. They also employed Dexter Wansel as arranger and producer for their latter recordings including this one.
The bass: Fender Jazz, 1977 (neck pickup only)

Thank you! I'm very glad that you were inspired to give this one a try for yourself. It's a cleverly constructed little line, though relatively simple in terms of the number of different notes. The challenge I found when trying to recreate the tighness of the feel was to realise just how much all the notes are played on the front of (almost anticipating) the beat. Wishing you all the best in your bass studies!
I was just made aware of this song yesterday. I’m planning to do a bass cover, and I wondered if anyone had done it already. Very nice.
