MF165 Independent PTO Clutch and Hydraulic Assembly

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I install the independent PTO clutch brake parts for my MF165 tractor. Then I place the PTO clutch drum and hydraulic assembly together and insert steel roll pins into the clutch drum to prevent the brake disc from slipping over the edge of the drum.
The pins were not original to this tractor but a service bulletin from Massey Ferguson included this update on later models. This tractor had the roll pins installed about 20 years ago when it was overhauled the first time. Unfortunately for me when the brake disc shattered last month I found that both roll pins had broken at some point. I couldn’t get the old blind roll pins out and since drilling them out would have almost certainly led to a busted PTO clutch drum I opted to drill a new hole beside the old pin.

Hi Dennis and thanks for the question. In order to get all of the parts I needed to rebuild my PTO clutch I ended up having to take the serial number of my tractor into a Massey Ferguson dealer and have the parts department look up the individual parts that way. They have a list of everything you’ll need. Some aftermarket kits that claim to be complete just aren’t and they are of questionable quality. My dealer told me that a complete clutch assembly was no longer available, which is why I had to order the individual parts. The total cost to rebuild my PTO clutch was around $1200.00 US as of early 2017. It cost that much because I had to replace part of the clutch drum and the control valve assembly. You may not have to replace those parts so your cost could be much less. That price does not include the hydraulic pump which I also had to replace. The pump was $800. Unfortunately, due to the age of these tractors the parts are becoming more and more scarce as time goes on. My tractor was made in March 1968. The dealer can tell you that information if you give them the serial number which is located under the battery access door on a metal plate just in front of the shift levers. This repair set me back quite a bit, but I haven’t had any problems since this repair was made. It took me and a friend nearly 4 days to complete this repair. The most difficult part for us was putting the two halves of the tractor back together because we couldn’t get them to line up right. One more word of advice. If your tractor has multi-power there is a short hydraulic hose that connects between the two halves of the tractor. It supplies pressure to the multi-power clutch. I was going to reuse mine because it looked like new. When we were putting the two halves back together that hose ripped in half. It was dry rotted. We had to take it out and have a hose made. It's a lot of trouble getting to this hose, so just go ahead and replace it while you have the tractor torn apart. If you don't want to order from a dealer, go in and get a list of all the parts you'll need and get a printout of the part numbers. Take those part numbers and look them up online and order them that way. I did this at first thinking I would get better pricing, but my local MF dealer ended up being less because they didn't charge me shipping. I wish you luck on your repair and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.
