✅ VIDEO DESCRIPTION
How safe is it to cross the border into Mexico for cheap dental work, prescriptions and eyeglasses? Liz crosses the border SIX times to find out.
🇲🇽 GENERAL INFO ABOUT CROSSING THE BORDER
Yes, you need a passport. Real ID will not get you back into the US.
Five states (currently) offer Enhanced Drivers Licenses: Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont, New York and Washington. You can travel to Mexico without a passport if you have the Enhanced Drivers License.
Info about Enhanced Drivers Licenses: www.dhs.gov/enhanced-drivers-...
No guns are allowed into Mexico.
If you bring your dog, you will need proof of current rabies vaccine and a current health certificate.
Before you go, check with your phone plan to ensure your cell phone will work in Mexico.
Try to arrive early and on a weekday to beat the crowds.
The walk across the border is short. Bring with you your prescription bottles so the clerks can match them, a bottle of water --- and your passport. Also, you will need cash or credit cards.
LOS ALGODONES (new Yuma Arizona)
I parked in the US and walked across the border.
From Interstate 8, take Exit 166 south. You will drive about 1.75 miles to the parking lot. The parking lot is easy to miss. Watch for the green “Last U Turn USA 900 Feet” and turn before that sign. Once you make the turn you will see you are in the QUECHAN PARKING LOT.
You will need $6 cash to park, and maybe more if you are in a camper. The parking lot is big rig friendly, easy to get in and out.
Of each of the 6 times I crossed NO ONE was in attendance on the Mexico side to check us. This means if you forget your passport you will not have an easy time getting back out!
Los Algodones is supposed to be on Pacific Time (California Time) but the border shops all follow Yuma Time (Mountain Time).
NOGALES (near Tucson)
Take I-19 South to the Burger King on the US side, 47 N Sonoita Ave in Nogales AZ. Parking is just $5 all day.
Walk through the $2 an hour lots across the street, cross the next street and then cross the border into Mexico.

I've been to Los Algodones for dental work 5 times in the past 5 years and I've had great work as far as I can tell. Los Algodones is literally on the other side of the border wall and there are hundreds of dentists in about a 9 block area. The people making it sound scary don't understand how safe it is in that small area where the town relies on Americans being safe and getting great service. You don't have to go deeper into Mexico unless you want to experience it more fully. I think our dental work has saved about 2/3 and we've had a great road trip besides.

Well said, and my experience with dental in Los Algodones is pretty much as you state. I would NEVER go into Mexico beyond those few blocks of the border at Los Algodones, but felt perfectly safe in that little city. It really is a remarkable island in the mess of what organized crime has done to much of Mexico.

I've been to Algodones many times beginning in 2019. My brother and I had a lot of dental work done. Saved many thousands of dollars. Better care than here in the US. Wonderful dentist. Dr Ruis. He is building a new office across from Hotel California. His wife is also a dentist and specializes in root canals. I was there in September '23. Food is great in Los Algodones too.

@@denacollins352 Hold it. The people who were shot were in a notorious cartel border town - Matamoros. Right by Brownsville. Extremely dangerous area. Not only that, they DROVE into Mexico, something I would never do even when it was safer. One of the ladies was going for plastic surgery, not exactly medically necessary. Still, it is tragic they were apparently caught in crossfire between two rivals. The dentists and pharmacies she is referring to are in Nogales, Mexico. Yuma is apparently the same but I can’t speak to that firsthand. They are literally a 30 to 60 second walk from the gate. The dentists are excellent, American trained with modern, spotless offices. No one I know who goes there has had a problem with the exception of one lady who said she got an infection from an implant. In the US an implant starts at around $6K. I’ve had 3 implants done in Nogales costing me about $1,800 each. I walk straight to the dental office and after straight back to the CBP gate to return to US. It’s a real shame the Mexican government doesn’t take care of the cartels once and for all. The US military could, but the vapid clown in the WhiteHouse, does not care. I doubt Mexico even WANTS to do it because they are probably getting kickbacks from the cartels who bring tons and tons of fentanyl into our country.

The US has imported a lot of Mexico's (and other countries) people and problems in the last 2 years What 800,000 people the first year, another 2 million last year alone? Crime is getting endlessly worse too. Homelessness near me went for unnoticeable to now having 4-5 homeless people in our main grocery center any given time. These are not families on hard times. These are 20-40 year old's that look like they crossed the border within in the last year. Los Angeles is ridiculous. Lines of tents and RV's parked all over

It might be time to take down this video. It looks like you are losing credibility with many of your subscribers. You keep saying how safe it is where you go in Mexico and to disregard what is being shown on the media. If someone takes your advise and has a bad experience, or even worse gets hurt, is it worth it? This insistence on everything in Mexico being safe and good may be your experience, but as things heat up with Obrador making incendiary statements, that could change any moment.

Braver than me. I can kinda pass for Mexican, although I was born in Chicago, my mother is Mexican and is unable to speak English. As such, from a childhood, I had to learn Spanish. I also have family in Mexico. With such, I will not travel to Mexico. When my mom migrated to the United States, she came with a friend, who also migrated. Her friend travels to Mexico. Last year, when returning, she passed thru Mexican customs, then had to pass through US customs. When they checked her car, someone, using a strong magnet, stuck a package with what I'll call "unlicensed pharmaceuticals" and an Apple Airtag under her car. Two of my cousins got pinched by U.S. ICE and were sent back to Mexico. Cops there shook down my cousins, who obviously had nothing, and detained them while contemplating what charges they could come up with while they call someone (me) to wire them some cash. Many of the cops there, are not like cops in the U.S. In America, most police go through an academy and learn the basics of constitutional rights. They might ignore them from time to time, but at least US cops are taught. Many cops in Mexico are not police, they're soldiers. Instead of being taught to respect the constitutional rights of people, they're taught how to aim, to switch the safety selector from "Safe" over to "Rock-N-Roll", then squeeze. Don't get me wrong, I miss Mexico, I have many memories from when I was younger, but I'm not going back.

Los Algodones and Sani Dental have been my solution for full mouth dental reconstruction. After estimates from dentists in Chandler and Scottsdale Arizona ran $50K to $55K. Compare to $14K to $18K (depending on final choices) at Sani Dental including the hotel stays. My implant work and temporary acrylic teeth were done in March 2024. I was surprised at the speed and precision, it was very different from experiences in the USA (a lifetime of dental history after childhood car wreck). I go back in late September-October for the final teeth to be fitted to my implants. Some points to consider: 1. GUNS & AMMO! ILLEGAL DRUGS! Before packing luggage (gym bag, shoulder bag, handbags, etc etc ETC!), empty it out. Unzip every pocket or closure. Shake them out, visually inspect inside with a flashlight. Even a single stray piece of ammunition can get you arrested in Mexico. Same advice goes for your coats, jackets, anything with a pocket. Take no weapons and VERIFY you don't have something that you forgot or escaped your notice. The Mexico point of entry for Los Algodones was undergoing construction and upgrades when I was there, every car and all luggage was being searched for everyone entering, 100% including on foot. Take this seriously, don't just think you know what you've got in your bags! 2. On your return do not think for one moment you can conceal anything you are bringing back. There are always limits on what you can bring back and Customs inspectors are adept at spotting deception. If caught in a lie, if caught trying to conceal, the criminal or civil penalties are infinitely worse than the import tax or confiscation on a declared item. 3. For dental do your research online first. If the work is major, plan a visit for evaluating more than one dental practice, and they you. I had dental records and x-rays from several years before and emailed these to three dental practices. After initial email and phone contacts made, I made a trip just to be evaluated and get estimates from three offices that looked good in my online research. I paid for the exams and imaging at each one ($150 to $180). Possibly some dental practices will offer free or discounted exams and imaging to prospective patients, I didn't bother with that. Two of them had either free hotel stays or deep discounts offered. 4. Sidewalks in Los Algodones are uneven and constantly changing as you walk along. One shop may have tiled the old concrete in front of them while the very next one has something completely different to walk on. Not a problem for most folks, but for the elderly or impaired it can be an issue. So pay attention. 5. Tip Jars, you will see tip jars in all sorts of businesses. Don't be cheap, these folks earn very, very little compared to most visitors. That includes pharmacies and little convenience stores, you will see tip jars. Put some money in them, needn't be a lot, there's no rules or standard amounts. I made a point of taking along all my loose change (not the pennies) and plenty of $1 bills. 6. The wait to cross back into the USA can be, often is, quite long. If you are on foot plan to use a bathroom before setting out for the crossing. Plan on the weather, the line to walk back into the USA has shade structures but for all my crossings, I spent at least a half hour in the sun before reaching the shaded sidewalk. Take water to drink. I also had a compact travel umbrella in my suitcase (a carry-on size, wheeled, typical sort). My longest wait in line was 2 hours.

Republicans talk tough and do nothing. Democrats pretend the border is safer than ever. I've no love for either party. Just the same, I found Los Algodones to be an exception. It is a remarkable place for the safe access to low cost dental care. Its very existence depends on Americans and Canadians being safe to come and spend their money. Nobody knows if there is any sort of protection money being paid to the cartels, but it is so profitable that Mexican locals get dental care cheaper than Americans pay. Sometimes, it is free to locals. What I'm getting at is there is a heck of a lot of financial pressure in place to keep the little town safe for foreign visitors.

I think this episode is a huge mistake. Resent activities have proven that Mexico is not safe and you are not qualified to post this as being ok for people to do. It’s been shown that often the drugs are expired or not of the same makeup of the prescription you are to take. Drug companies sell goof ups overseas for Pennie’s just to dispose of them and there are a lot of counterfeits.. I trust my pharmacy, my dentist and my eye prescription. I just ordered 2 pair of eyeglasses yesterday for just a little over $100 and they are guaranteed. I don’t know how easy it is to deal with problems, especially since you don’t live there. If I have problems with dental work I can immediately get it fixed at no cost. Retired Americans are easy pickings especially since Mexican police probably won’t be any help.

My friend and I crossed the border into Mexico, from So. California. She got excellent dental care for a very low cost We both stocked up on med's. However, I must disagree about buying antibiotics. It's absolutely critical for testing to be done to determine what infection is present, in order to know which antibiotic is needed. The U.S. has an extremely serious problem with antibiotic resistance, due to the doctor's careless prescribing of them, and people self diagnosing, buying and taking them willy-nilly. A note of interest: I lived in Norway for years. And antibiotics are virtually impossible to get. During my years there, I was given no antibiotics even when very sick. My understanding is that doctors there believe the body heals itself if left alone to do so.

You may have a good trip a few times but at some point you will be a victim and with someone who speaks Spanish you have better odds of getting out free and with your money!

Liz, I love Mexico and have been there 3x just this winter. I have a guy that I text when I need service. He gets my appointments for me and is even willing to meet me at the border to walk me over. I didn’t need that because I always feel safe. Everyone is friendly and I get treated so nicely. I am served coffee while waiting and my exam was way more thorough than I’ve had in the states. The news media loves to instill fear in us. People buy into it and it keeps them from enjoying life. It is sad, really.

I was in Algadones the other day, we have a small car and usually drive in and use the public parking lot in town for $2 (must have mex. insurance though) Got my teeth cleaned for $25 last year a root canal for $300. Bought two pair of glasses frames and single lens for $50 each. Meds are so much cheaper than even using my insurance here in the states. The food is great and very safe as long as you go in the day time. Note most business close at around 3 pm in the after noon so it is best to go real early.

1:59 I understand people buying Amoxicillin for "just in case situations" but I don't think it's a good idea for a couple of reasons. 1-Overuse and indiscriminate use of antibiotics contributes to the antibiotic resistance problem. 2-Amoxicillin has it's place in medicine but it may cloud an issue by partially and ineffectively treating a bacterial infection. A medical provider has the expertise to use the right antibiotic for a given infection. For example, treating a dental infection with Amox may just keep the infection smoldering whereas a better antibiotic will knock it out completely. 3-Often a culture and sensitivity will be done to determine which antibiotic is best for an infection. You can't get a C&S unless you see a provider.

Another great video Liz. As a Texan who lives relatively close to the Mexican border, both your destinations look 5-Star when compared with our border towns. What used to be safe and fun is a thing-of-the-past. Church groups used to regularly travel to cross over. My wife would return (along with dozens of other women) loaded down with pots, dresses, trinkets, etc. and felt 100% safe. Sadly, that's no longer the case here. Many winter Texans still cross over for dental/meds/glasses but are much more cautious. For those who do go over, the savings you mention are very real. Good luck on your journey towards 100,000!

I’d do the optometry and maybe get some pills but really for me the savings realized on those items doesn’t warrant two or three hours on the freeway in an RV or hotel. Bariatric surgery isn’t a walk in the park and if complications come up and you’re back in the states you probably will have to go to the ER first. Maybe the savings on dental work would make it worth the trip but what am I going to tell my dentist if I show up in her office with a fresh implant that I didn’t want her to do?
