Mexican Guy Speaking Fluent Finnish Language - How Did He Learn?

Today I'm joined by Mexican friend Raul, who speaks Finnish very well, almost fluent Finnish. In this video we'll talk about how did he manage to learn Finnish. He's been living in Finland for 6 years and has reached great Finnish skills during that time. He will share his story and tips on how he ended up in Finland and he learned Finnish.

Raul's Finnish is so good that most of the time he does not even have any accent. He must really be gifted with languages, this is really not the standard after year of studying Finnish. Good for him, he has majorly upgraded his options in Finland getting his degree in Finnish. My husband is American and we live in USA, he took some Finnish classes when we first started dating, he lasted 2 hours.

Hello Aleksi ! Inspiring video cause actually I'm from Mexico too ! I've been trying to learn Finnish through videos and apps, but it's not easy at all! I just know some vocabulary words related to food, colors, animals, numbers and greetings. I've started with some verbs and some grammar points.. And I agree with Raul it's difficult! Pronunciation is quite similiar to Finnish, buy vocabulary.. damn!! There's no way to relate words to Spanish or English!! However it's a beautiful language and culture, so I won't give up! Listening to music is another way to learn and practice. And since I found your videos, i can know a little bit more about Finland! 🇫🇮 Thanks for your videos! Kiitos! 🤗😍

I have to disagree with one thing: Listening to music doesn't help much to learn a language. The lyrics are often "poetry" or almost gibberish and pronounced in a way that not even native speakers understand what the heck they are singing about.

The thing I love about this video is that Raul is speaking Finnish and that he is telling us about his wonderful journey in the target language. There are so many videos on KZread where self-proclaimed 'polyglots' or bilinguals talk about how they learned a particular language, but the videos are always in their mother tongue (English, French etc.). In fact, there are some people who claim to be polyglots and they have dozens of videos about how to learn the languages that they have learned, but you will never see them speak the target language, except maybe for a few memorized sentences in one or two videos. It is hard for me to take what they are saying seriously. One exception is Steve Kaufmann, who has several videos in which he is speaking different languages impromptu. That is the kind of person I would want to listen to. I can sit here and claim that I speak 20 languages and pontificate for hours on how you can become a successful 'polyglot' like me, but if I never speak any of the 20 languages in front of you, I will come across as nothing more than a braggart. People will be as wary of my advice as they would be of the advice given by a homeless beggar about corporate financing, or of the advice given by a 600 pound dude about how to lose weight. Thanks for making the video in Finnish, and props to Raul!

Hey Aleksi, nice videos man. I'm an American in Finland with a very similar story to Raul's. I thought about messaging you actually for an interview but I'm not that brave yet if you said yes :) I have been told I speak Finnish quite well for a foreigner and I am close to the level of where Raul is but not quite yet, after studying/practicing/speaking Finnish for 3 years. It's always nice to meet a foreigner who speaks Finnish well and you can definitely see the similarities in how we are taught the language in school. I notice a lot of Finns have low expectations for foreigners speaking Finnish so they usually compliment you when you do speak it decently. And I notice a lot of foreigners expect to learn Finnish in about 6 months or a very short time even though they hear it's impossible, which is not realistic for most people. For most, Finnish takes a lot of work to read, write, understand and speak so many give up, I have had to invest a lot of my personal time and effort to learn it, a lot of self-motivation and courage, it's become a lifestyle goal like changing your diet or something instead of just a hobby that lasts for a season or so (you don't learn Finnish, Finnish learns you!), I have felt like I have failing miserably at it all the time, but it is amazing to finally start to understand it a lot and speak it decently, for me at least it really does feel like a super power because I'm not a super student and never in my life thought I would learn another language fluently, especially Finnish. Glad you're making this videos, you're on the right track with videos like this :) interviews are great.

I agree with you that if one wants to learn a language, consistency, being patient and good learning strategy are important. I myself was able to pickup Japanese in a year with the aforementioned qualities and as you said, people don't need superhuman skills to learn a language fast. Keep learning! Aleksi, thanks for being one of the people who helps Raúl by speaking Finnish with him! :) I agree with him that this is indeed one of the biggest challenges nowadays of learning a language - getting your friends to speak it with you, instead of English (especially for me, as a native speaker of English). I don't speak Finnish yet, but I experienced this difficulty with Polish and German. Sometimes I even got angry with friends for always speaking English to me. I am curious how the language dynamic evolved between Raúl and his wife. Does she speak Spanish? Or did they start off in English? Do they speak Finnish now, and did she help him? Was it difficult for him to convince her to begin speaking Finnish with him?

I think that the finnish people feel like it's much more courteous to speak english than finnish. That foreigner might feel embarrassed because of the the mistakes that are about to happen and because of it, the english is better because it's neutral (both makes mistakes) or that only the finnish makes the mistakes. In a sense, they are trying to save pro-actively the foreigners from embarrassment, not realizing they are making things worse. Also one big reason is, for some finnish, that they so rarely get the chance to speak english that they also would like to have the chance to practice. However, that being said, no finnish is going to decline if asked to speak finnish. It's just the first assumption about what the common language will be and if asked, they will all accommodate.
