I don't know about "struggling". The series only had two brief bursts where its games were being developed regularly, and in both cases they sold fairly well, if not at Zelda/Mario levels. If we're at the point where Nintendo thinks "if it's not selling at Mario levels it's bad" something is truly wrong with this industry. The problem is that the series stagnated after the Gamecube era. The Prime games are all rather same-y, which isn't really bad per se, but for the fact that Nintendo didn't do anything new with the series beyond that. Prime's story was definitely a side plot for the series' main storyline, and after Fusion nothing new has been added. Even Other M is a blatant knockoff of Fusion. We've had over a decade to see something new happen after Fusion or to get a better look at Samus' childhood/adolescence.

lol, have you ever played "Other M"? It's ATROCIOUS, a huge step down from the Prime series. It all goes back to the fact Nintendo caters to their Japanese fans first and foremost. The Prime series was not as popular in Japan as it was in the States, so they reverted to the Super Metroid/Fusion storyline, except they did it ALL WRONG. It looks like here they're taking some of the good elements of that game (such as Melee attacks) and fusing them with the classic Metroid scheme. At least we're finally getting Prime 4.

nahor88 Metroid never was popular in Japan, 2D or 3D they never cared for Metroid or any other Sci-fi games, Other M was an attempt to please the 2D Metroid fans, Prime fans and attract casual players(being so simple in controls and linear), but they failed. By other side Federation Force was their shot to japanese audience, and they failed again.

I'm so glad Metroid 2 is getting the love it deserves! It's so underrated in the Metroid community.

No, it's not underrated at all. It's like the worst Metroid game. Even the original Metroid on the NES and Federation Force are better games (each one in their own genre, of course) than Metroid II on the GameBoy. But with this remake that will change. It could potentially rival Fusion, Zero Mission or even Super.

Notice the vast difference between this and Federation Force... never forget Nintendo.

It was a solid game, not my thing; was something well put. Is just that Metroid fanbase is the bitchiest subfanbase of an already bitchy fanbase (Nintendo). Between Other M and Federation Force passed 6 years. That's nothing, specially for a franchise that was overheated and needed restructuring. Metroid isn't in the level of popularity of Mario or Zelda. Metroid isn't even in the level of popularity Fire Emblem or Kirby. Metroid is a "C" tier franchise for Nintendo. You need to be more grateful.

They made a couple areas with spikes that are too narrow for space jump. Makes grapple beam still useful, but situational still

+AshXXMayftw Yes! I personally never bought a Metroid game but after checking up the lore last year I realized I have missed a really good franchise. We need to make sure that Metroid can live in this world. Metroid Prime 4 will be the real test but we need to make this one a success first and foremost. This is as you say our last chance to make a place for Metroid to live in. If both games fails in sales that will be the last time we will see Metroid ever again.

I was never a fan of the classic pink or prime purple grav suits. It clashed too much with the green/yellow of the suit body. Switching green out for blue helps meld the look together, making easily the best looking Gravity Suit thus far.

It's going to be interesting to see how the sales play out for this game. Metroid is a franchise that Nintendo fans seem to be clamoring for, despite being a very poor selling franchise. I hope everyone puts their money where their mouth is.

Metroid only really sold poorly in Japan; save for Other M and Federation Force, it's done fairly well internationally. However, since Nintendo (like most companies) carries a domestic bias, they've spent a good chunk of time being under the false impression that Metroid is not profitable enough to practically continue, hence why it maintains a rather low presence compared to the likes of Mario or Zelda.

Prime 4 is coming to the switch. and who knows, if this sells well. we might see another 2d metroid game for the Switch in the future. And idk, i love my switch but i still play on my 3DS more. It got so many good rpgs, which i love. And a lot of new nice looking games coming for it aswell. Metroid just being one of them. And i'm not even a big metroid fan.

Can metroid fusion mode be unlocked after beating the game instead of amiibo? They are not easy to find. Please nintendo.

Metroid took a ton of inspiration from the Alien franchise from the outset; the plots of the original Metroid II and Fusion are noticeable homages to Aliens and Alien: Resurrection (respectively), and the Metroid life cycle directly copies those of the Xenomorphs, to name a couple examples.

Bring this and the prime trilogy to the switch, make more 2D Metroids and a sequel to fusion ❤️just bring everything Metroid to the switch. This series deserves it more than anything else

I'm happy to say that this is the first game I've ever pre-ordered. Two new Metroids announced in one day? It was the defining moment of my life.

This is beautiful. I love how it incorporates some of the battle mechanics of Other M. It's perfect because while I dislike Other M's story and dialog, I do enjoy the game's fighting system. And it works great with this game since, being a remake of Return Of Samus, its innate 2-D perspective complements the cinematic style of combat.

Even Other M has some decent concepts in it. There's a lot of flaws with its gameplay, but they really mostly just boil down to lacking what other Metroid games had (i.e. exploration), as opposed to being objectively bad changes for the series. I certainly think there's room for a third-person 3D Metroid game. The clunky switch required for missiles is definitely something that'd need to go, but just having a lock-on function that changes your controls a bit (which we've seen all the way back in Ocarina of Time) would probably take care of that. Add in a brief precision aiming control which gives you a few seconds of slo-mo to manually target a weak point and you're pretty much set; it'd make standard weak point boss mechanics doable without making missiles themselves clunky.

Nyzer A lot of people are just worried about the series becoming too gimmicky like other m was. :P im actually optimistic about this game though. hopefully its as good as AM2R!

I'm gonna buy the game because I'm a huge metroid fan. But at the same time I'm upset that the UK has waaaay more physical goodies with their special edition. All we get is a soundtrack. They get a morph ball metal key chain, the soundtrack, a metal pin, a steel case resembling metroid 2 for Gameboy, and the game. That just isn't fair man. I would buy it here in the U.S in a heartbeat. Day one. I have the 3ds pre ordered and the limited edition game but man do I *REALLY* want that U.K edition.

Many people here in the U.K share your sentiments. Given that it's out of stock and the only ones people have managed to catch a glimpse of are on Ebay, from scalpers asking for outrageous amounts of money. Honest opinion, here. Be thankful you've managed to get your special/limited edition, since very few people that are actually fans have gotten their hands on our special edition.

I've only played one Metroid game so far, Super Metroid for SNES. I loved it and this looks like it's going back to the roots. I'm going to buy this game, even though I'm not a hard core fan and never even looked at one of the 3d games, simply because I immediately fell in love and want to support the franchise.

Well I have the Prime trilogy and the reactions on the internet on Metroid Prime 4 were pretty impressive, too. Got me hyped for something I know almost nothing about. I don't know if I can get my hands on Fusion or Zero mission. Is any of that on the eshop for 3ds, Wii u or Switch? Also I'm happy to read some positive replies and suggestions for a "casual fan". Sadly a lot of people aren't that welcoming.

Fusion mode? My favourite GBA game gets attention... YAS!

I buying a 3ds just to play this game. Preorder the Samus Returns 3ds, cant wait the 15th.

that piece of music is actually from super metroid. it plays in rooms with suit upgrades in tem (beams etc) and in boss rooms AFTER you beat the boss. it was used in prime too, to add that metroid signature. infact alot of music from other metroid games were included in prime 2

That's the Metroid "overworld" theme; it was the theme of "the first level" in the original NES Metroid; that said, it _does_ sound a lot like the Tallon Overworld arrangement of it from Metroid Prime :)

The 'first level of the original NES Metroid' theme you're referring to is the Brinstar theme, which is similar but not the same. This music is indeed a livelier version of the Tallon Overworld theme from Prime 1 and is used as the 'Item Collection Rate Screen' music in the Prime games, especially 3. It's also pretty much my favorite bit of Metroid music. Fitting that they would set Item Collection Rate as the background music to describing the items to collect in real life to unlock extra features.

I LOVE Fusion but I hope next one is a brand new game not remake, Fusion is already pretty good and the control is still up to date. If there must be a remake I hope it is Super Metroid, because the graphic and control seems outdated compared to GBA Metroids.

If any Metroid should be remade, it's Other M. I get that you might not like the idea, but hear me out. It can be rebuilt as a traditional 2D Metroidvania, cutting the fat from the story and finding a better reason for Samus to lose her suit upgrades. Here's a suggestion. Samus is attacked early on by the deleter or MB or whatever, and it disables her upgrades leaving her with the basics. However, the Bottle Ship crew were trying to reverse engineer her Chozo Tech, and by finding their prototypes around the facility, Samus can salvage the parts and repair her suit. You can also keep Adam as an optional hint system and keep Samus' dialog internal Fusion style rather than interacting with the NPCs. Do this, and we can have a new 2D Metroid, make Other M non-canon and fix any continuty/characterization issues Other M had.

Super Metroid had really bad controls that the GBA games refined to an excellent degree. Having a run button is fine, but forcing players to scroll through power bombs and missiles that could've been handled as ZM and Fusion did - with a hold-to-fire trigger rather than taking up UI space and time-wasting, dexterity-disrupting button presses - was just... very poor compared to the systems they developed afterward. L = aim up/down - R = Missiles/power bombs Face buttons = Jump, Shoot, Run, Shift for grapple and X-ray (hold/toggle option in place of auto/manual icon option) Select = Toggle super/normal missiles Or something like that. Maybe give some smart-locking to the grapple. On top of all that, stability updates apply. Metroid, RoS and Super all ran very poorly compared to the GBA titles, and Super is now the only title left without a stability and optimization rebuild.

Well further down in the comments many people are posting angry comments saying things along the lines of "so this garbage game is why am2r got taken down?". Which is why i said too bad more people aren't excited about the game because i really want it to sell great, hopefully making nintendo realize that the people love 2d metroid. I really do think this and prime 4 could be the last metroid games if they don't sell well, although i'm very confident people will buy em.

Eleventh Floor Yeah why didn't they just destroy the planet? They didn't gain an interest in the metroids until after Super Metroid as they still wanted them exterminated. Would've solved all the problems later with the Space Pirates, Metroid clones and X-Parasites.

I have no idea about the moral code of the Galactic Federation but in this universe there are apparently technologies that track down every single individual of a species without fail, meaning surgically removing the metroids is a viable option, with the added bonus of preserving both the resources and innocent lives of the planet for the future.

Friendly yoyo Remember Zero Mission. GF tried standard warfare against the Space pirates. Didn't work. Then they got desperate and tried orbital bombardment. Didn't work. Then they got really desperate and hired Samus. We all know how that went.

Wow, this is attention to detail! Not only the game, but the trailer itself. The font used in the first part of the video is the same used in the Echoes text in Echoes logo. Just wow

Don't forget, there's this movement starting up called "Operation Samus Returns", it's goal being to make Metroid a successful franchise worth Nintendo's time and effort. Here are some steps towards this goal: 1.) If you're a content-creator, on August 31, make/do something Metroid-related, particularly KZread videos. It can be a Let's Play, an analysis video, a discussion video, anything as long as it has to do with Metroid. Be sure to use the hashtag #OperationSamusReturns with it as well. 2.) Just use the #OperationSamusReturns hashtag in general with Metroid stuff on social media. Spread the word as much as you can, so that more people will be encouraged to do so. 3.) The first major milestone of this movement will be with Metroid: Samus Returns for the Nintendo 3DS; the plan is to have the game be successful enough to outsell the best-selling Metroid game in the series so far. See, as it turns out, the Metroid games have not been very successful in terms of sales, especially when compared to the Marios, Pokemons, and Zeldas over the years. So far, the best selling game in the series was Metroid Prime for the GameCube, which sold 2.78 million units. Incidentally, the second best-selling Metroid game in the series was the very first Metroid on the NES, which sold 2.73 million units. Even Super Metroid, widely lauded as the best Metroid game in the series and one of the best SNES games on the platform, sold a mere 1.42 million units, which isn't even as much as Metroid: Return of Samus on the Game Boy (which sold 1.72 million units, BTW). Therefore, the goal for Metroid: Samus Returns is to try to have it surpass 3 million units in sales, and the only way to make that happen is to spread the word on this game and show Nintendo that we really do want a proper Metroid game after all these years!

I wouldn't mind all tutorials to be narrated by this guy.

Have you even read the comments so far?? Right now YOUR comment is quite at the end of the list and so far I have seen no comment about AM2R at all or complaining about this (except Amiibo...). Those specific whiny AM2R fans are a very little minority! Most Metroid fans love AM2R and can't wait to play Samus Returns!

Definitely the game I'm most excited for this year! Which is something I never thought I'd be able to say nowadays. Got the 3DS, the Special Edition, and the Amiibos all pre-ordered as well as the day off from work, so I'm definitely beyond ready for this game!

Does Samus ever get jobs aside from the Galatic Federation? It's like her title as Bounty Hunter is just for show.

she likely does in-canon, just never in games. technically Super was a mission of her own will because it started with her getting a distress signal then chasing after ridley on her own accord

Now I'll have to borrow someone's 3DS so I can play this And then later when I can afford a 3DS, I'll get the limited edition Metroid Samus Returns 3DS

saving up for Star Wars Battlefront II Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition, and Red Dead Redemption 2, And also, the only games I would get on 3DS are Super Mario 3D Land and Metroid Samus Returns, and Mario Kart 7.... So, it is not quite worth buying it now than it is to wait until the 3DS is officially Replaced my the Switch...

I like the way the planet looks! Seems like they really kept in mind the old aesthetics of the original, simple as they were. I hope the sound design holds up just as well. :D

+iverson silva Well it's not the worst game out there but ignoring the story, it tried to combine the 2D Metroids and Metroid Prime gameplay but failed to match either one. They really should have made it more like Metroid: Zero Mission and remove the 1st person parts entirely.

I'm hype for those amiibos.

I just noticed that Ridley's Theme plays throughout a good chunk of this trailer, even though it released almost a month before the game.

After watching new gameplay from gamescom stream. I think there is 90% chance that this game is going to be much greater than AM2R. They gave Grappling beam new mechanics for puzzle solving. The enviroment looks very varied and atmospheric. Metroid battles are varied and some of them uses harsh environment like lava to good use. The music is so great. They even remixed Red soil theme in the water swamp area. You can find Chozo memories which tells Chozo lore. The level desing is top notch and they have some clever twist. You can also combo aion abilities using for example Beam burst and Time stop at same time. I think this is going to be my Game of the year along with Xenoblade 2 and Mario odyssey.

I'm Metroid fan since super Metroid and I must says this game is one of my favorite Samus have a serious evolution in this game keep the work out in this game a sequel would really great.

I have this on my gameboy and I'm still getting it

Everybody's happy that this isn't Federation Force, and I'm freaking out about the return of the 2D(technically) Grapple Beam!

God I love the black and red Metroid logo they used in this promo. Looks menacing, just like SR388.
