Metroid Prime: Return of the Scan ft. MatPat

Ойындар

It's time to re-complete Metroid Prime! Joined by the talented MatPat from Game Theory, we tackle one of my reviews that started it all. This version of the game gets a bit tricky as it wasn't made to include motion controls. Regardless Samus Aran is back ready to scour the map for upgrades and solve the intriguing puzzle bosses of Metroid Prime. Let's jump right in for our Metroid Prime review!

@@OpXarxa 3 still has so much of the story and detail, the subtle nature of the plot, while there's just more action and people to interact with. Samus works for the Federation. Did you never think we'd get a game where we interact with this giant galactic government? It doesn't need to be isolating to be a good Metroid game. It still keeps the plot and deep world building, just affords the player more options for scenarios to be in and more interaction with different beings. It's still, in moment to moment gameplay, the same game, telling the same story, with slight variation on the formula. You still explore planets and infiltrate the space pirates' base. You still obtain new suits and upgrades. You still get the vast lore we've come to expect from every game. You still do everything Metroid is supposed to do. I never played _Super Metroid_ as I never owned a Super Nintendo, so _Metroid Prime_ was my first experience with the Metroid series and the Metroidvania genre. I loved that the pace of the game and the carefully-crafted visual design would absorb you into the world with the masterful soundtrack that stretches the range from mournful, curious, thrilling, and unnerving, as you studiously scan for hints and lore and hunt for secrets around every corner. Just like irl, the quiet moments, puzzle-solving, and preparation that constitute the majority of the experience are a backdrop for short periods of intense action, and the fact that the game uses fps mechanics but wasn't designed to be action-filled places _Metroid Prime_ in the same arena as trendsetters like _System Shock 2._ I believe the above aspects make it one of the forerunners of modern fp survival games and immersive fp horror. My original playthrough of _Metroid Prime_ in 2002 was the first time I can remember feeling completely immersed in a game experience (I was mostly a strategy and platformer gamer prior to that point), and my experience with the game fostered an enduring love for Metroidvanias and fp survival that I still feel to this day.

If I may interject here: You CAN distinguish between scans you need for the log and therefore completion and scans that are not needed. To complete your log you have to scan everything alive and everything with a RED scan symbol. If it's not alive and has an orange scan symbol, you don't have to scan it.

I remember playing Metroid Prime at a Wal-Mart Gamecube kiosk long before I ever owned it or a Gamecube of my own, and felt a combination of wonder at what had been my FIRST FPS experience and solving puzzles, and nausea because around the Gamecube era was when I discovered I suffered horribly from motion sickness, and couldn't play games from that generation onwards as long as I had been able to play Super Nintendo and N64 games. I also believe that Metroid Prime was actually my first exposure to the Metroid series, since I'd missed Super Metroid on the SNES despite being a 90s kid with a Super Nintendo (I had Mario and Donkey Kong Country, but missed Star Fox, Metroid, and Kirby) and never picked up Metroid Fusion. Nowadays I've put time into a fair number of Metroid titles, I've beaten Super Metroid a handful of times and enjoyed it immensely, played all three Metroid Prime games and ultimately picked up the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii (I'm hoping they will re-release it for the Switch since I will DEFINITELY purchase it), tried out NES Metroid, Fusion, and Zero Mission, completed Other M once to mixed feelings, and am looking forward to Metroid Dread whenever it comes out.
