My two cents: The original mix is slightly lower in pitch; the opening chords in your mix are higher, and there's more space for the instruments themselves. The snare is tighter, breathing less but hitting harder in unison with the power chords. The difference in pitch effects everything so the pick-up guitar chord (0:06) doesn't sound flat either. The tom rolls are easier to hear in their entirety-not simply the first beat, but the whole triplet each and every time. The kick sounds *very* loud and clear (0:09). I love those boosted tom strikes at 0:29, but also the bass, which is also more audible; both sound very distinct, pounding and blurbing in lockstep while James riffs at the left end of the mix. The snare roll (0:38) sounds boosted and lean, with less rattle and more punch; and the instrument itself is much less compressed overall. The cymbals are much quieter (0:42) except possibly on the accents, making it easier to appreciate the snare and the kick. I can hear little details easier, too, like the eighth notes (0:52) on the snare, and the kick-drum triplets (0:54). James joins in (1:04) and has a little more space to sing, not nearly as crowded by the thrashing power chords. As he sings, I can make out him, the guitars, and the drums, and they all have a different location to be heard from. I cannot stress enough how you've improved Lars' kit. There are moments where the cymbals are audible for a whole bar (1:53), but only then. The amount of control you've impressed on him adds a feeling on contrast to the proceedings that simply didn't exist before. Sometimes I can hear more of the snare; other times, the kick-drum feels more prevalent (2:01). The effect is a punchier mix, with flashes of lightning inside the storm instead of nonstop, droning thunder. It also makes James easier to understand during the verses (2:11). Again, so is Lars (if you listen closely, you can hear a double kick at 2:33). He comes in clear as day (I love the snare-kick pattern throughout the bridge section; the bass drum was completely inaudible in the original mix). The higher pitch really also makes the staccato guitar chords slash at you, just before the bridge. Kirk's solo (2:48) sounds more localized, but less overwhelmed by noisy bandmates. He's definitely quieter, simply because he doesn't need to be loud; I can still hear every note. At the very end of the first half of the solo, Lars comes into focus with those muted cymbal strikes (3:12); in the second part of the solo, his snare roll (3:23) rises while Kirk slides down the neck, hammering on and off like mad. The slight reverb added to James' voice at the very end is cool, too. I loved this one! It sounds less doomy than the original, but much, much clearer and tight by comparison. I used to listen to your original Whiplash remaster while I was in grad school, and I'm glad you decided to revisit it and make it even better! Awesome work!

Austistic Communist its mostly true but it’s not for the reason mentioned the drum kit has been re-done and since the separate tracks of whiplash are out there you can merge it nicely with the other instruments. That’s it because most of the bad audio comes from the bad quality of that recording with that original kit

@@smarkmalark That is a possibility. The general theory is they took the bass out of Justice in a tribute to Cliff. Jason said later in interviews he was pissed about it since he worked hard on it and then you can't even hear him. I like Justice, but it still sounds like Lars is banging on paint cans. That said, it's a great album in it's own way and part of the Metallica legacy.

Goddamn Kirk looked insane playing that solo, and watching cliff's right hand is mesmerizing
