Metallica - Until It Sleeps (Official Music Video)

Музыка

“Until It Sleeps” by Metallica from the album Load © 1996
Lyrics:
Where do I take this pain of mine
I run but it stays right by my side
So tear me open and pour me out
There's things inside that scream and shout
And the pain still hates me
So hold me until it sleeps
Just like the curse, just like the stray
You feed it once and now it stays
Now, it stays
So tear me open but beware
There's things inside without a care
And the dirt still stains me
So wash me until I'm clean
It grips you so hold me
It stains you so hold me (yeah)
It hates you so hold me (yeah)
It holds you so hold me
Until it sleeps (Until it sleeps)
Until it sleeps
So tell me why you've chosen me
Don't want your grip, don't want your greed
Don't want it
I'll tear me open, make you gone
No more can you hurt anyone
And the fear still shakes me
So hold me, until it sleeps
It grips you so hold me
It stains you so hold me
It hates you so hold me (yeah)
It holds you
Holds you, holds you
Until it sleeps (Until it sleeps)
Until it sleeps (Until it sleeps, until it sleeps)
I don't want it, I don't want it
Want it, want it, want it, want it, no, woah-woah
So tear me open but beware
There's things inside without a care
And the dirt still stains me
So wash me 'til I'm clean
I'll tear me open, make you gone
No longer will you hurt anyone
And the hate still shapes me
So hold me until it sleeps
Until it sleeps, until it sleeps
Until it sleeps, until it sleeps

This song is amazing full of meaning. It’s speaks to the pain we feel, until it sleeps. The older I get the more beauty i see in Metallica’s music and the meaning behind it.

The thing I love about this song is that you really see the range of James's voice. It starts out so soft and smooth, like it's gently caressing your ears. In the next moment it switches to something so raw and rageful, it's like sliding down 3 mile of gravel road. It's a beautiful thing, there's no-one quite like him. See also Hero of the Day for the same feel. (Another underrated gem that I regularly play on repeat.)

Completely agree, I can understand the people that just love young, thrashy Metallica... But if they could broaden their horizon a bit for Load and Reload, with the great songs on them.... I think of the two albums like Stadium Arcadeum from RHCP. A great double album, but could have been edited into one amazing album with single after single like the Black album.

Not trying to sound like a a know it all but thats called dynamic range. In music production dynamic range refers to volume. The range between the quietest and loudest sounds. If you just say range people will assume you mean pitch.

The lyrics of the song, written by Hetfield, address his mother's battle with cancer, to which Hetfield's "it" refers. They can be seen as either describing the emotional pain he feels for the loss, or the physical pain his mother was feeling while she was ill. Both of his parents were Christian Scientists, and did not believe in medicine. The lyrics are also interpreted as dealing with anger issues. Hetfield's father, Virgil, died in late 1996, during Metallica's Load tour.

I happened to stumble upon your comment, and i feel exactly the same as you when you say they have a very spiritual side, one which i feel makes metallica different to most other bands. these guys had the whole "making a kickass song to pull em in again" thing down years ago, they were practically 'god like' in my teenage mind, now I see them as men with a story to tell, done beautifully through epic rock and chonky timeless riffs that will always have a place in my mind rent free lol. Love love love this band, they are like a category of music in their own right and equate to any drug, better than actually, and i find them excellent to cathartisise and channel emotions through, its music therapy and theyre the best

I find it pretty adorable that people claim Metallica 'sold out' when Load/Reload was released. If they were in it solely for the money, they would've just produced another Black Album record out of popular demand and it would've sold massively. But they chose not to because they wanted to express themselves in a radically different way. Considering that their tour schedule was absolutely gigantic a couple of years earlier; it required playing the same songs over and over, night after night for years on end. It's pretty understandable that it felt right to them to do something different. And I think that's more a sign of artistic integrity than just making another Black Album in my opinion.

***** Everybody is entitled to an opinion on Metallica's change in musical direction, but that also doesn't give anyone the right to expect the band to mould themselves to their own preferences and expectations. The only expectations the band should be moulding to are their own. That's the entire point of not selling out.

I hate that people rip on Metallica for this album. I'm a huge fan of their old stuff, Damage Inc. is probably my favorite song by them, but to act like they did a bad thing by not playing thrash metal forever is dumb. For on thing for a band to stay alive, they have to change with the people who listen to them. Secondly, they were getting older and you mellow out as you age. This is still good music even if its not the same as their old stuff.

I Actually think that Load is Kind of Overrated. A lot of people Consider Load better then Reload, and Death Magnetic. I mean don't get me Wrong, Load is a Decent album but it dies down for the second half. I feel like Reload is a lot better, Songs like The Unforgiven II, Low Man's Lyric, Fixxxer, Etc. I only really like Until it Sleeps and The House Jack built off Load.

He thought they were going to follow suit and do an instrumental for the Black Album, but it was changed to include lyrics before they recorded it. At least on the Live Shit: Binge and Purge box set they show him doing an instrumental version of it live.

Sometimes I don't understand Metallica fans. I consider myself as a great Metallica fan, you know, I've listened every album they have done ( Even St Anger D: ). And althought I have had my "seasons" with the albums ( Like idk, 1 full month just listening to Kill' em all or Black Album ) I can't understand some fans. For example, the fans who think that they just have 3 or 4 "real albums", when I see comments of those persons I think that they just like their "Real thrash" moments, and okay, that's fine. The problem comes when they say that they hate Death Magnetic, really? Death Magnetic is a very good album, with some Thrash riffs, and althought it's not their best album, is a very nice one, you just have to make yourself to it. And about these commercial albums (Load and ReLoad) Okay, they might be commercial, but hey! It show to the world that Metallica can play more music than Thrash, for all the public. Imagine it for a moment, their 9 albums just the same as Kill' em all, that would be very nice for the people who just loves Thrash Metal and who loves their solos ( Bc solos like the one in Jump in The fire are brilliants ), but what would happen to the people who loves metallica and want to hear them all his life. In their "active moments" in the sad ones and well you understood me. What I want to say, is that there are people who just complain about everything and are very closed-minded. And that all Metallica albums are made for a reason, maybe money, maybe love to the music, idk. But they are all perfect (except Drums on St. Anger, BUT THAT'S AN UNIVERSAL TRUE)

I'd say this is the first album where Metallica didn't sound a whole lot different than all the other bands that were popular at the time. In the wake of grunge, many older bands were terrified of becoming irrelevant and desperately tried to cop the darker grunge/post-grunge sound and aesthetic. Metallica was obviously doing the same with Load. Fortunately for them, the band was big enough that they were able to weather those times successfully. And for the record, I really like this album, because I love the music of that era, be it Metallica or whoever. I'm glad they chased the trends with this one.

Until It Sleeps" Where do I take this pain of mine? I run, but it stays right by my side So tear me open, pour me out There’s things inside that scream and shout And the pain still hates me So hold me until it sleeps Just like the curse, just like the stray You feed it once and now it stays Now it stays So tear me open but beware There’s things inside without a care And the dirt still stains me So wash me until I’m clean It grips you, so hold me It stains you, so hold me It hates you, so hold me It holds you, so hold me Until it sleeps So tell me why you’ve chosen me Don’t want your grip Don’t want your greed Don’t want it I’ll tear me open, make you gone No more can you hurt anyone And the fear still shakes me So hold me until it sleeps It grips you, so hold me It stains you, so hold me It hates you, so hold me It holds you, holds you, holds you Until it sleeps I don’t want it So tear me open but beware There’s things inside without a care And the dirt still stains me So wash me... till clean I’ll tear me open, make you gone No longer will you hurt anyone And the hate still shapes me So hold me until it sleeps Until it sleeps

I usually never speak of this- but here I just may. I’ve struggled deeply & personally with mental illness my whole life. Whatever in the fuck you want to call it, I was diagnosed with Manic Depression as a child. I was hospitalized for the first time not long after. I was just a kid. After I was released from the horror of my episode I was watching TV back in the days of yore when there were actually music videos. Music was always my refuge. When this, then new, Metallica video came on I was deeply taken by how precise James’s lyrics and overall vibe of the video described perfectly the mental illness that plagued me. All I wanted was for it to go back to sleep. Everyone else also literally drugged me so as to put this awakening back to sleep. So here I am, a long time had passed. Yet the memory remains. And “it” has gone back to sleep. I live in fear everyday of when it may come back.

some good songs on those albums, unforgiven 2 is the best song on those albums for me. mostly because the albums are neither heavy metal or thrash and most old tallica fans only like the first 4 albums.

Because there is too much filler on both albums. They should've taken the best of both albums and put out one CD. Also, there is a mid-tempo, radio rock blandness to the whole ordeal. There are some good if not great songs, but it's a bit watered down too. Bleeding Me on Load is especially great in my opinion.

Its awsome that metallica has many styles , it shows that they r really creative and professional . People say " oh , im a real metallica fan and i only enjoy first 4 albums" No , thats not being metallica fan. A real metallica fan enjoy all of their album and respect them! Of course u can enjoy more other albums , but critic the bc of the hair? Pls grow up!
