"Cliff Burton received co-writing credit on "To Live Is to Die" as the bass line was a medley of unused recordings Burton had performed prior to his death. Because the original recordings are not used on the track, the composition is credited as written by Burton and played by Newsted. The spoken word at the end of the song ("When a man lies, he murders some part of the world. These are the pale deaths which men miscall their lives.") was written by German poet Paul Gerhardt, but was erroneously attributed to Burton in the liner notes. The second half of the speech ("All this I cannot bear to witness any longer. Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home?") was written by Burton." (Wikipedia) * wipes tears *

It's ironic to me that the two best Metallica albums without Cliff Burton, ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL and DEATH MAGNETIC, both have mixing issues. Everyone knows the "There's no bass on ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL! " thing and DEATH MAGNETIC has a distorted quality in parts, mainly during some of the snare drum hits. The funniest thing, at least to me, is that not only do I but pretty much everyone else let's it slide because those albums kick ass.
@mkfanforever58

I would say you could barely hear bass in Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. They're not as bad in terms of mixing issues as AJFA is though. I think Kill Em All has almost perfect mixing when it comes to mixing in bass. And Cliffs tone was pretty overdriven on RTL and MOP is that what you mean by distorted?

They wanted Death Magnetic to be as loud as possible, so they used compressors excessively, until there were no dynamics left. Still, they raised the volume more than the audio could handle and thus the sound is digitally distorted at some parts. It's such a rookie mistake I'm really surprised it was made by expert sound engineers. Oh, and Death Magnetic is mostly forgettable. Especially the instrumental...

Even if Cliff was alive, i think they would’ve made this song but in a different way. The main riff was written by Hetfield in 1982 on a jam tape with Dave Mustaine, lars and Ron Mcgovney. Cliff wrote the acoustic intro/outro and the basslines in the middle part of the song and the lyrics. If Cliff was alive, this song would’ve sounded ALMOST the same here

It is quite interesting to try to imagine what this album would have been like if Cliff Burton remained alive; I am not sure if they really wrote any of the other songs before Cliff died, but I guess this track is the closest that the album comes to an "if Cliff had stayed alive" type of composition, since it was at least partly written while he was alive.

Bad ass, one of my Metallica favorites!
Enjoyed it very much! Well done!
@mkfanforever58
