For me it's the other way around. The gateway drug was hearing Dream Theater for the first time, that's what got me into practicing guitar etc. 23 years later, Metallica to me is the gold standard. It's all about the riff, the tightness, the attitude. That's always the yardstick for me. Is this riff Metallica worthy, would this recording be tight and ballsy enough for Hetfield.

I learned my first metallica song the day i got an electric guitar, which was exactly one year after i got an acoustic guitar and one year after i started playing. And yes, that irreversibly changed the direction i went. I literally went from fantasizing about being able to pick as fast as daron from system of a down to actually learning jeff loomis solos in about a year, and master of puppets was the first song i learned that gave me the confidence to do that.

You know, its funny when you look at from a generational standpoint. For me it was early KISS. I think its the same for a lot of my generation. Take Dimebag for example. He kind of started as a huge KISS/Ace Frehley fan. Then comes Eddie Van Halen and Judas Priest and Iron Maiden until Pantera evolved into something completely different than where they began and he changed the face of that brand of music. Very interesting conversation

Yep, Fade to Black made me want to grab a guitar. Kirk really had a lot of potential in the RTL era.

💯! I’m not sure what happened to him over the years but he was absolutely awesome early on. His solos were perfectly crafted for Metallica’s music.

I remember really liking blackened and thought that main riff is simple and slow until I see they play it and I was like mindblowned.like how they play thing so fast I can't hear the E string?.but the song that got me into guitars is dyer's eve.it fucks with my mind and was the coolest thing I've heard in my life.

Can relate. Kirk Hammett’s solos made me want to play guitar but it was Van Halen and Friedman’s playing that got me to buy an actual electric guitar.

I wasn't that into Metallica, although I know most of their music. My gateway-drug was "System of a Down", the songs from their first three albums are quite simple to play and sound amazing. Here's what I play today: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eaJ5uK-go9rWdps.html Oh, and subscribed, I love to support small KZreadrs!
