I was there at this concert. We were in our last school year. Yes, not all people were safe there. A lot of people were drunk and they were throwing bottles. Some people people were injured with those bottles. But I wasnt. And my friends were ok also. The Event was massive, and yes, there was 1 million+ people. The entrance was free. We didnt buy any tickets.

Legend states that there are still people making their way home from that concert... ahahaha. What's even crazier is that in spite of the crowd being that size, there were 0 fatalities and 0 major injuries throughout the entire show. Minor injuries only, as you spoke to with the people throwing bottles. It gets me every time I watch one of these reaction videos and the reactor says something to the effect of, "I hope they were all safe," or "That many people, something is bound to happen,". It didn't, not really. Unlike Astroworld 30 years later which had a small fraction of that number of people and yet had multiple deaths. Proof, in my mind, that we CAN do massive events like that correctly.

Props to MrLBoyd for not giving up on the live Metallica videos after all the awful live video suggestions. We finally got the Moscow reaction we deserved.
I just can't imagine how it feels to absolutely nail this solo LIVE in front of over a million people. I would be shitting my pants for sure.
I don’t always rock out, but when I do, it’s with 1.5 million people!
the opening song is called Ecstasy Of Gold it is from the movie The Good the Bad and the Ugly. Metallica has been using that song to open their concert for years
This concert took place one month after the attempted coup of Russian government. Gorbachev was held prisoner at his vacation home and Boris was the holdout and eventual leader. The Russian people were amped at this point. The concert was free to attend.

91, all of the Soviet union. Radio outside of the USSR had only been for a year. First question verse allowed in to give concert. These people were desperate to celebrate their freedom and we’re willing to give it all. People traveled from three days away. The crowd was almost the size of the total population of Moscow at the time. Yes soldiers all throughout the crowds but it’s uncontrollable. Notice the enthusiasm and smiles in the crowd. But you’re right almost 500 people died in the crowd and getting out when it was over. PS I always understood the Sandman to come once you were sleep. The one who left all the sandy crusties in the corners of your eyes when you woke up. If you slept with one eye open(stayed awake) he couldn’t come. Prayer was one we prayed before bed almost always with parents. Kinda creepy if I think about it now. “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, and if I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take”.
The first story about the Sandman was published in 1818 by German writer E.T.A Hoffman. The story is about a mythical creature who throws sand in the eyes of children who won't go to sleep, causing them to fall out of their sockets.
Regarding making it home safe, there is a Russian expression that goes something like, "They are still on their way home from Metallica", that references those who fled Russia during the collapse of the Soviet Union. The large crowd size is due to being denied rock music and any number of things, under communist rule, and the enjoyment of the new freedom of movement they were previously denied for decades.

Yea bro this one was legendary. Celebration of the end of the Sovoet Union. Before this a concert featuring western bands would have been impossible. Ive seen Metallica in concert 5 times and they always play flawlessly and bring an energy you cant imagine.
I got curious and looked it up. This ("Monsters of Rock") was the 6th most attended rock concert in history.
It's kinda hard not to get pulled into that energy. It cracks me up that people think about this as a kids song.
@zoegartham312
9 ай бұрын
The energy behind it is why I can't listen to the studio version of this at all anymore unless it is a specific thing-such as Larnell Louis playing it near perfectly after listening to the song only once. Otherwise, this is the only version I accept. Sad that MRLBOYD didn't listen to the coda/outro of the song, stopping it where he did. Oh well.
The intro music is one they used to commonly play at beginning of all their concerts. They may still use it. I haven't seen Metallica live in a few decades. There is a documentary on the event (Monsters of Rock festival). "For Those About to Rock: Monsters in Moscow"
Very popular but still one of the most underrated rock/metal bands. Many of their songs are deeply philosophical and poetic but disguised by the popular trends and genre elements of the time.
@jamiemacdonald436

Using the words "underrated" and "Metallica" in the same breath is laughable. I think I get your point, but underrated is not the best choice of words. They were literally the biggest band in the world, Metal or otherwise for quite a few years.
@steffenml

@@jamiemacdonald436They can still be underrated, even by the people who like them. There are lots of themes in their songs which you have to actually pay attention in order to get. Lots of details that get lost. It’s of course weird to call them “underrated” considering their popularity, but a band can be insanely popular AND the depth of their lyrics and music still be underrated.
@GoldenMean743
10 ай бұрын
@@jamiemacdonald436Even in the height of their popularity, they did not sell like Guns N Roses, but their talent far exceeded GnR. They aren't The Beatles or the Stones, though their lyrics are often deeper than those bands. But yes, I was mostly referring to aesthetics and the complexity of their music being underrated. Their critical success has not been to the level it deserves, and no, this is not laughable. I work in academia, and I've seen academics study the art of Tupac and The Beatles. Have yet to see any professional critics explore Metallica, though I'm not saying I've read every academic critical piece.

Mr. LBoyd, I love you to pieces, and respect you more than you could know. I also know how easy it is to mis-speak when you're trying to listen AND speak at the same time. Having spent many years In radio, I know exactly what it feels like to say the wrong thing and not even realize it until the station starts getting calls to correct what you said. I have seen several reactors call this "The Lord's Prayer" for some reason - maybe just because it is such a famous prayer and the first one that comes to mind. I learned the prayer in this song as a child and it was not until Metallica released this that I realized what a terrifying thing that was to do before leaving a kid in a dark room alone! The "If I die before I wake..." part gave me many sleepless nights.

@pastorofmuppets13 My mother wouldn't let us kids say it. I learned it from my cousin, and my mom said it was a horrible thing to teach a kid. I didn't let my kids say it, either. I told them we just don't plan on dying in our sleep. We ask for protection so we stay alive. Now the grandkids are picking it up from their friends. People don't think about it - they just teach it by rote to their kids. Since my oldest grandkids are 25 and 24, I guess I'll be teaching great-grandkids soon! Lol

The song is about S.I.D.S. (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). For a long time they never explained it because they were concerned how people would react to knowing this.
No one was safe, not even the performers. But for the crowd it was the safest day in their life up to that point. They were USSR shortly before, now they were free of that regime. Everyone came to enjoy stuff that was forbidden and illegal just short time before this concert took place. For celebrating the end of oppressive Soviet regime and the beginning of perhaps not as oppressive regime that will come into power this was about the safest it could have been. Location is improvised stage on what was major military airfield of strategic importance during the Cold War. Edit: Oh, Creeping Death from the same concert. James being American singing "DIE, DIE, DIE" part at this predominantly Russian audience and them yelling it back at him was bonkers moment. Pantera delivered one of best live guitar solos in their entire existence as a band on this same event.
With every reaction the crowd size grows.
Intro: The Ecstasy of Gold
Can you imagine standing there, with that thing your doing with your fingers on those strings making 1.9 million people bounce!
I love the Spaghetti Westen music that they intro with.
There were 54 casualties at this concert. AC/DC, Pantera, and Motley Crue also played.
This was celebration concert for their freedom, the people of Russia. Celebrating the fall of the Soviet Union. The intro song is Metallica’s I try song to every concert they do.
My bigest "crowded" concert I whent to was Pink Floyd in fact and the "the big 4 concerts" with metallica. But over one million is just insane
Big crowd. Epic performance.
That was at the time "The Black Album was released and also, USSR had ended a couple years ago, so everyone wanted to enjoy they opening to the western world... Combine those two factors, and you have a perfect combination for a huge crowd

This song started out being about still birth. They made them change part of the lyrics because of the shock value.
Fun fact: ducks can actually sleep with one eye open. This lets half their brain sleep while the other side remains alert to danger.
The concert was free to attend. It was more than just Metallica also.
No the beginning is " extacy of Gold", they do it at most concerts for the beginning of the concert or the most popular song.
that opening was also used my Opie and Anthony from New York Radio back in the day when they were competition to Stern
“This is an AB-normal amount of people.” 😂
creeping death from the same concert is amazing
Your commentary throughout the song makes me wish you did the video even as epic is this crowd is it's now been out done it's like the 4th or 5th largest concert of all time
Metallica have opened every single show they've played since 1983 (sans Load / Reload era) to Ennio Morricone's "Ecstasy of Gold" composition, originally featured in the 1966 Clint Eastwood film, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
This song is a lit night terrors that kids have
Check out the history of this. Monsters of Rock show for the FIRST TIME IN RUSSIA! Multiple bands played there for the first time because this wasn’t ever allowed there. 1.6 million people were there. And btw it was free admission. Just got home myself 😂
I love the "1.6 million people....but why?!" 😂
Sublime 😊
I'm glad to see you figured the song out. The Sandman is a good guy, it's the dreams that can be evil.

Sand man is considered bad. I was told by my parents that if I didn't close my eyes to go to sleep, the Sand Man would come and throw sand in my eyes to make me close them so I would go to sleep. That's what all kids were told way back in the 70's.
The army was there!

1.6 million people
No, everyone wasn't safe. Surprisingly a very small percentage were hurt (61 people/?), but still. Have you ever seen the original Metallica music video for this song??? There were 1.6 million people here. They lined up to get in hours before and reached over 250,000 several hours prior. This was, if memory serves, the year the USSR ceased to exist. This resulted in the sales restrictions to be released. Pizza Hut, Pepsi, others. When the Pepsi license ran out, Russia traded multiple naval vessels to renew the license (ships to be sold for scrap to... Sweden I think). Anyway, Pepsi temporarily became in one of the top ten largest naval powers until the ships were sold. Funny stat. To say that Russian people were looking to get out from under the cold war was an understatement.
0:54 You're right that it's not Enter Sandman. All since their beginning Metallica have opened their concerts with Conquest of gold from The good, the bad and the ugly.
I think there's still people walking home from that
The Russian Military actually flew helicopters over the crowd so the down blast from the rotors would keep the audience cool in the hot weather.
If you want to jump down a rabbit hole you need to check out a band called ice nine kills. They have a whole story to tell in order starting with The American Nightmare. With all the songs being from a horror movie
They say 55/60 people died that day in the crowd....
Great reaction. React to: Shootyz Groove - The Craze. (album version) One of the best rap/rock bands out there.
1.9 million
I read that 13 people died during the concert and that is way less for a city of the same size.
I was hoping you would get to this..
In Soviet Russia, you don't control crowd, crowd controls you. This was the fall of the USSR in real time and near proof that the cold war was ended by a guitar solo.

I was scrolling through the comments looking for this one. Glad someone came through with the Soviet Russia joke.
those helicopters were flying around to keep air circulating
Safer than a Travis Scott concert by far
Yes it wasn’t safe because I’ve heard around 50 people died from heat stroke and trampled and drugs. The helicopters were misting the crowd with water to cool them down. Just imagine being in the middle of the crowd and having to go to the bathroom no way you’re going to get there. This was a festival.
Monsters Of Rock, Moscow, 1991: 1.6 million
Really wished you mentioned something about addiction
I believe the count was closer to 1.8 million, but who's counting. Wish I were there. But I did see them in Dallas 1998 at the Starplex Amphitheater. Real life changing experience.
It's an extremely dark song, there's no silver lining to it. And hell no 1.6 million people in Russia get not get home safe. One of my favorites though. The "sandman" represents the terrifying realities of our world. This song wasn't written for kids.
The song is about crib death
Six fatalities and thousands of babies were made that day
Life regret #11 ( I don’t know seemed like a good number)… not seeing Metallica live in 1992 with my current husband… instead I went with a real idiot. Lesson learned. Regret #12 would be not seeing Van Halen in 1984… what was I thinking??!!
The intro music, which you seemed familiar with, but couldn't place, is from a Sergio Leone western movie, likely with Clint Eastwood, but for the life of me, I can't place it? The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, maybe?
Oh to have had the vodka concession that day.
I think the official death toll was 58. And I’m not kidding

Even a biger crowd than the bigest of pink floyd
You would be correct. Not safe. Idk the actual # but there were deaths attributed to suffocation, heat stroke, and a few misunderstandings between the crowd, and the russian military resulted in at least one beating death.
That concert was pretty much Russians Woodstock 😂
Since you dove back into a metal song, and haven't done a Babymetal song in a while...you should react to one of babymetals more serious songs...try "Rondo of Nightmare with Mischiefs of God intro Budokan live" (invite only arena, showcases the Kami band).
I actually prefer the performance of the next song, “Creeping Death.” An American metal band leading a million (give or take) Soviets on the outskirts of Moscow in a chant “Die, die, die!” just a few weeks before the collapse of the Soviet Union is surreal.
I think this is when American heavy metal arrived in Moscow.
A lots of people died, Google says 53
