So how do you feel about the tone this record? Obv you're on point with the tone here, but I mean overall on the album. IMO it's a little weak, kinda disappointed with it if I'm being honest. Needs more crunch, it's got bite in mids or higher end, but I was hoping for some heavy crunch. Would love to hear your take on a beefed up 72S tone. Gonna be dope when your AJFA-ized versions of some new songs drop 🤣🤣💯

So. I don't "make videos" but I almost want to make an extensive Review of this album and a "look back" at the last 2 albums in comparison. Imo, as a fan since 1987, I obviously love their last 3 albums MUCH more than the Black Album through St. Anger. Those albums to me were weak and even the Black album was one riff per song arena rock boringness. 72 Seasons has really good songs. Production wise, it may be the best produced Metallica album ever (people will say the Black album but... again. That album came out over 30 years ago and production technology has increased dramatically since then. Put them side by side, I think 72S sounds fuller, thicker and more crisp... also, I just plain do not like the Black Album lol). It sounds crisp asf on a good system. But.... Song wise. Is it as good as Death Magnetic? Hell no. I'm a fan of the faster, more energetic material the band has to offer. Songs like That Was Just Your Life, All Nightmare Long, Judas Kiss, My Apocalypse, End of the Line are all better than every single song on 72 Seasons. James' vocals are also really, really good here. Probably the best they've been since Justice. All in all, I have to listen to it a few more times but I put it above Load, Reload, Black, St. Anger and in league with Hardwired maybe above it... not sure but definitely lower tier than Death Magnetic and the first 4.

Idk man I mean I'm 43 and my 15 year old self would agree with you. But as I've grown I've learned as a guitarist that scooped mids and super saturated compressed distortion is not always better. I now prefer the gain dialed back and more mids than my old self. I.m.o it is more percussive, and the pick attack is gnarly and has more dynamics. It's a dryer, more modern tone that's a bit cleaner for them nowadays. It grew on me a bunch. I think their newer tones are the most balanced and powerful I've ever heard. Their old "Scooped" tone was good at the time, but it would get lost in the mix nowadays. You gotta remember, the guitar is a midrange instrument. Just my opinion as a tone junkie audiophile/musician. But tone is subjective at the end of the day, and I can understand your point of view.

102% agree. Everything from St. Anger to 72 seasons sounds weak to me. I just don't understand why they do it. I can't hardly listen to any of 2003 to 2023. It's just weak sounding.

this is one of the best guitar tones they've ever had I don't understand how people just can't hear it. I have never heard a guitar tuned to E standard sound as thick and beefy as it does on this record, and honestly, AJFA was my favorite metallica album for a long time but nowadays I've realized it sounds a bit brittle and weak, it's got lots of bass but it's the "my speakers are farting" type of bass. On 72S (and hardwired) the chugs just sound much more powerful. The fact that the chugs on You Must Burn sound thicker than Sad But True (played in D standard with a baritone tuned an octave lower added in to beef up the chugs in the verses) is testament to how good this guitar tone is. And if you have any doubts, just listen to them play Blackened in 2023 and pay attention to how much better the riffs sound with the current tone. If I had to rank their guitar tones I would go 1. Load/Reload 2. 72 Seasons/Hardwired 3. Ride the Lightning 4. Black Album 5. AJFA 6. Death Magnetic (the itunes remaster) 7. Kill Em All 8. Master of Puppets
