"Gojira. Are they death metal?" Nope. But they keep getting placed into XM Liquid Metal and showing up on my recommended on YT and Spotify. I don't listen to them, but algorithms and djs(?) who make placement choices have decided that they are death metal. Technical probably, but not death.

I would argue that they did start out as a Death metal band, but over time just been cutting it out bit by bit, and perhaps becoming less interesting (for me anyways). Though i did read somewhere that vocalist was talking about next album going back to heavier direction, but will have to wait and see.

i was really curious about who they got top5 if they put Spencer at 10 and Hannes only 6th and i have to say it's a really good list even tho i'm not really a massive fan of their 1st pick or Duplantier or Derek Roddy and i enjoy most of their mentions more than these guys

They have changed in recent years, but yeah go back and listen to literally anything pre 2016 and it's death, but especially 2008 and older it's like, really death metal. The first 2 albums are straight up caveman death metal. I've watched some interviews and it seems like Mario is still more technically inclined than the rest of the band, and he wants to do more extreme music, I think Joe's just wanting to go in a different direction due to many reasons.

Um... lmao are you deaf? What do you think gojira's first 2 albums are??? The link has some of the best and most creative death metal drumming ive heard. They literally started as a technical death metal band for fucks sake. Hell, there's a song on l'enfaunt sauvage thats like 80% blast beats... Gojira isnt only stranded. Fucking cringe metal elitists

If you've heard one death metal band, you've heard them all. Obtuse and musically irrelevant, sans Opeth, where they use the otherwise dull brutallity to good effect.

Thats just unequivocally false. Death, Atheist, Pestilence, all amazing bands that fuse brutality, technicality, and in the last 2 bands cases, elements of jazz fusion. Maybe know what you're talking about before talking.
