EXO got me into the game too but different from you I have not been able to move on and dive into the music of many other artists 🙂. I hear a few other artists here and there but I am still head over heels with EXOs music and their solos since 6 years now. Never have I ever listen to an artist so religiously and for so long and I am still not over it. That’s how good they are.

Same. 11 months ago they started "creepin" in my heart. After 10 months, I started listening to other SM artists here and there. But I'm still heavy duty EXO-L.

I felt the same about the comeback. I watched their anniversary fan concert live that year and they sang Let Me In as an album teaser. It was crazy enough that I was actually listening and watching EXO live in real time, but to be hearing new music from them in real time at the same time all the other fans were hearing it for the first time is something I'll never forget.

SuJu LSS did that with several of their songs, first time that I saw that done in Kpop, don't know though if it actually was the first and whether it's a new strategy that SM came up with to create extra buzz. They ask people not to spoil the songs with fancams, but some do anyway as they probably expect. In the case of SuJu the songs premiered in their Japan concert so there was even an official Japanese TV broadcast that was ripped, snd fans were quite excited for the studio versions to be released, first Japanese and then Korean, and in their Korean concert they then added another new song, "Joke", for which the MV came out soon after. So they knew exactly what they were doing and it worked great for them.

honestly it does seem to be a small trend, even Blink 182 is doing that now, on tour! so now of course the ticket sells increase because there is new music that no one has heard

Just getting something sooner with a lot of money and effort that I know I will get later for free would be the least likely reason for me to motivate me. Blink 128 certainly try to draw attention to themselves since the run around naked while not exactly looking like Kpop idols. Also not a strategy that would work with me. Suit up please.

What you said after Growl about their vocals level, i totally agree!as a fact if you listen for example to their live versions of ballads from years ago, you can totally hear the difference on how they gain soooo much stability, elasticity and technicity...

I feel like EXO is probably the most balanced group I've ever seen in Kpop in terms of talent. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that they were designed to operate as 2 separate groups initially, but put them all together and the talent level right across the board is quite incredible. Maybe you can branch out into more of the solos and subunits? Xiumin has some good solo songs, so does Chanyeol and Chanyeol and Sehun have a subunit.

Yes, it was like the culmination of everything SM had learned so far (people joke everything before EXO was just practice), and they also got very lucky - except with the Chinese members, oddly they almost always have problems with them for various reasons. But to be fair, TVXQ was very good as well, but not quite as polished yet (and of course they were soon reduced to a duo) and Super Junior had an entirely different concept, they weren't supposed to be a "proper" idol group in the first place (amazing that they were good enough to be one after all). S&C are among my least fav rappers though, both technically and their style, I find their concept a bit offensive as a duo (arrogant womanizing machos with little substance; note that Im not talking about them as real people). But within the group their voices add a nice touch, Sehun is a great dancer and he's a standout visual of course.

@@aligensa S&C aren't necessarily my favourites, but it is interesting to see what they did with them as compared to EXO. I prefer Chanyeol's solo music. I like him better as a singer than a rapper.

I think thats a pretty fair statement, I feel like that with every group there is some gives and takes but I do think that is a correct observation. I think EXO is super well balanced in terms of talent as well which I think is something that other groups will struggle with, and sadly enough especially with newer groups, now it feels like a group is lucky to have an ace where this generation of groups were almost all aces especially EXO

Love this! Weird, I thought you had already done it but it was TVXQ. They, EXO and MAMAMOO are my fav Killing Voices so far. Sorry to rain on your parade, but even these performances are enhanced and pitch corrected in post. Someone on YT has analyzed this in detail in the case of MAMAMOO, and there's a British vocal coach who has some very interesting videos on this trend in general (in western music). Still great performances though. Btw, even some members of EXO's vocals are a bit weaker raw, but I don't remember anyone there being off pitch as badly as Donghae almost all the time in ballads (he does better with lower register rap parts and dance songs) in SuJu and Jonghyun and sometimes even Onew in SHINee. MANAMOO does pretty well too, so the analyst actually regarded the compression as a pity. But in Kpop even when it doesn't go as far as autotune so that you actually hear it it's obviously a stylistic choice because fans have come to expect perfection and also because the instrumentals are mostly all electronic, so the "analogue" human voice which has a greater spectrum of sound "around" the note even when it's well in pitch doesn't "fit in". I do get that. Personally I dont mind some weaker delivery esp during dancing, but being off pitch too badly spoils a performance so much I can't listen to it. I also don't need competition in the form of "my idols can sing better than yours" (esp not while hardly anything is raw live anymore anyway). Kpop has always been a partly artificial product anyway, enhancement if the voice is like cosmetic surgery for looks. Ironically the only thing they can't "fix" (yet) is the dancing, that's why they privilege that for newer groups in casting, even though music critics have the least respect for it. Either you like the overall product and accept it for what it is or you don't, but I still want to know what Im getting and why. :)

Have you actually watched them live, though, to make this claim that some members have weaker voices live? What sets great vocalists and artists above everybody else is that their lives are always consistently great and then they will have several performances where they are just mindblowingly amazing. No one is perfect 100% all of the time, not even the greatest of greats like Celine, Whitney, Michael. I strongly feel this applies to EXO and they are the greatest vocalists in all of KPOP ever, and some of the best of our generation across all genres. I’ve watched EXO fanmeet in Seoul in April, I was 11th row from the floor, I’ve seen Beyonce 2x live in Berlin and Warsaw, Guns n Roses in Singapore, Bruno Mars and Adam Lambert in Manila… EXO is right up there they were fucking insane live. Even with Baekhyun and Suho feeling sick that day and I knew they didnt sound as powerful as usual in certain parts, they still sounded amazing. Xiumin was a revelation, to me he was the most pitch perfect and clear and on point live. And Kyungsoo is just such a treat because he always switches up the harmonies and runs and adds a lot of extra adlibs different from the original. He keeps you guessing all the time. They were all amazing live. I’ve also watched Kai live in kpop flex 2022, it was seriously unreal. He is so good live. The only ones I havent seen live are Sehun and Lay and looking forward to doing so soon let there be an exoplanet #6 😂

@@M-de-Vale No worries, I meant weaker on a normal human level as dancing affects the voice. And everyone in concerts, esp with dancing uses support with backing tracks, so you won't even hear raw live when you're actually there. You can in some old TV music shows. And my comments were mostly about pitch, and I explicitly said I don't remember any of them being badly off key.

yes! I have done this! I wanted to do the Mama Monster and Wolf, it was something I wanted to revisit that every year but I remembered that they did the Killing voice, so I wanted to revisit it with fresh ears and eyes! 😊
