Thank you for your impartial love for this song. I have heard far too many complaints about their English songs, from “they aren’t deep like the Korean songs”, or “BTS phoned it in on the English songs”, or “they caved to the American music industry, using them to gain ground in western music”. Why is it so much worse to make English songs than to make Japanese songs?????? BTS does everything for a purpose, and Butter, Dynamite and PTD were wonderful uplifting songs for a time they were desperately needed!!! I too love PTD!!!! There is SO much to see and love in the MV! Hobi and Suga, JK’s spins, the guys in the background of each scene, the vocals!!! It’s jam packed!!

I love PTD- the message at the time the song came out was what we needed. Using ASL in the choreo was noticed and appreciated by so many in the deaf community. The fact that they performed this at the united nations AND it became a tour where I was able to see them LIVE! SO it is def one of the most memorable songs by them for me 💜🎶🎵

Great reaction! The necklace JK was wearing is a traditional Navajo necklace called Naja. It was to protect the rider and horse from evil. I loved that they also used sign language in their song. 💜🫶🏽🫰🏽

Thanks for sharing your reaction - this is one of my favorite songs too! So sweet that this song came out during COVID and was a way to cheer ARMY up. The video incorporates the love of dancing, music, a feeling of connectedness (all age groups, including the hearing impaired). I just love it. I can't help but smile when I watch it. BTS does that to people!

This song is so full of hope and kindness. It’s so inclusive of all people and highlights those at the time most impacted from office workers to the elderly and children. Its not just a pop song but pure hope and happiness. Those who dismiss the English sings really miss out. Also they are the only artists who have ever performed in the UN general assembly (others have performed outside on the lawn). They had to record this after flying in from Seoul starting in the middle of the night they did so well. Also this was played right after their speech to the whole UN about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) all 7 spoke alongside the president of Korea it’s well worth watching the whole 17 min speeches. This song is also historic for everything around their 3rd UN speech. It’s adorable to see how beloved and appreciated they are by the assistant UN Secretary General etc. Yes more deep dives!

During their speeches, they urged people (especially the youth) to get vaccinated. Major role models. They said they got theirs and hoped the precautions would allow them to perform in person again for Army. So many lost loved ones, we all needed to hear them make this plea for compassion and support. Freakin love them and this message.

I love your deep dives John. I felt incredibly emotional about this song as well for the same reasons. It doesn't bother me that it's pop because it was made to include everybody in the singing and the dancing. That's why the choreo was so easy. I consider it a one-off, and it's a terrific song. I love it so much. Finally, Jin looks extra, extra hot in the filming of and music videos. They're all gorgeous, yet Seokjin really stood out here. 💜

Oh, John! I think I could write a novel about this song/mv! I'll try to keep it short. First, thanks for getting it and loving PTD as much as it deserves. Your reaction was so fun to watch, and it brought me back to my first experience of the mv. This song and video just seemed like the right thing at the right time--its friendly, joyful rebellion, its diversity, it's colors--and when people started pulling their masks off, I got downright choked up! And them performing it at the UN! Yep, there's BTS, uniting the nations in a world-wide hug of a dance party better than any policy makers could ever do, no matter how well-intentioned. And last, I was a baby ARMY at the time this came out, so I was kind of confused about the laundromat setting, but now that I know about Spring Day, that part really gets me. I remember hearing in the explanation of the Spring Day mv that a lot of the survivors of the disaster felt guilty that they had lived while so many others didn't. So I always felt like the scenes in the laundromat were BTS's personal message to those survivors reminding them that they didn't need permission to live full and joy-filled lives. So beautiful! Don't miss the dance challenge compilation either--it's postivity on steroids! 💜

You're very welcome. I think it is important to let people know when they bring you joy. I started watching reaction videos to discover new music/singers/bands. Got me hooked into things like KPop, Ren, sea shanty revival, nu metal, scream metal, a cappella groups, you name it. But I found that some channels were able to bring me some relief from my loneliness and funk because of the person doing it. I crutched hard on it during the lockdowns, I didn't have a lot else. If it wasn't for a couple gamer friends and KZread, I don't know if I would have made it through those years before the vaccine came out. I'd go weeks at a time without seeing or talking to someone, unless it was a zoom meeting or gaming. Anyway, sorry to ramble, just wanted to let you know not to worry about the naysayers. The emotion, joy, and sincerely is what matters. Whether it is Ren or BTS, I get you, and that seems to be a rare thing lately. Thanks again mister handsome, wish you the best

Thank you for your reaction, John, and your deep dive into this lovely song from the boys to cheer us up and remind us that we are still the bosses of us. Some people have criticised the English language songs as being too poppy; they seem to forget the context to these songs and their release, when most of us were in the throes of Covid restrictions driving some into really dark places. These songs were gifts of light from the boys to see us through to the end of the pandemic. Love that Meg chose the performance at the UN - this would be around the time they spoke to the General Assembly for the third time and Jin delivered his famous "welcome generation" speech. Being totally shallow here, thanks to the producer (or whoever) who got those extra two buttons undone on Jin's shirt - gave him a more liberated look! Also loved the dance challenge from the Whatcha crew - yes, love those guys too.

It was actually the BE album and Dynamite that were released during the worst of the pandemic. Permission To Dance dropped in July of 2021, when restrictions were beginning to lift. They actually gave their 4 concerts in Los Angeles the same year a few months later, in late November/early December. All three English songs were meant to cheer people up, though, so you're still right about that.

I love this song too. It was so needed in its moment, and the video makes me tear up because of all the cuts to regular people all over the world dancing. It sounds like cheerful pop but you read it right: it's a very defiant song. Defiantly hopeful. We were all feeling pretty hopeless, and believing in the future felt like a huge leap of faith. Ed Sheeran wrote s good song. 😁 I loved the shooting sketch of this one because they had so much fun and so much input. The direction was loose and it makes so much of the video look genuinely fun and spontaneous. It's the simplest choreo ever. They wanted everyone to be able to dance along. And the sign language is such a sweet touch... and Yoongi won my heart a little when he talked about it and it was clearly important to him. 💜

The "big-ass necklace" JK's wearing in the laundromat is a Navajo Naja, (crescent). They're worn as a display of wealth (they're thought to come from the Moorish "arms of Fatima" evil-eye-warding symbol, but they don't have particular cultural significance to the Navajo except as decoration.) What's more interesting to me is the dreamcatcher over the door when he first comes in-- they're supposed to catch bad dreams from entering while you're sleeping. (And you KNOW how important dreams are to BTS!) You might've seen it and just didn't have time for it, but there's a fun "making of" for the UN Permission to Dance, too. The whole thing came together rather quickly (and they had to get up REALLY early in the morning for the filming). In one way, the pandemic aided them-- since Broadway was closed at the time, there were a TON of dancers available to work, so they were able to put their "flash mob" together really quickly. ^_^

I fell in love with this song the instant it came out for the exact reason you said regarding its rebellious undertone. Plus it’s just happy as hell, and it always makes me smile. I also loved the sign language dance, such a sweet touch. I got to see it live in 2021 and being in a stadium of 70,000 people all dancing and singing to this song while we batted giant balloons around with streamers and confetti….so incredible. Just getting to be together as humanity again was something I will never forget. I kept crying lol. Love their looks in this video. Iconic. The icecream 😂 They’re such dorks! 🥰 I’m never gonna stop being in awe of how they can just slip so perfectly into different positions when dancing, like watching water flow! It’s amazing. I was so proud of them performing at the UN. Aside from them making history doing so, they’re also one of only a few artists in history to actually perform there. Literally everywhere is a stage for them!! (The behind the scenes of the UN video is a fun watch as well). My brain can’t process my love for them!

Yes, to the deep dive of BTS videos. Loved this. There’s a hilarious video of The World Health Organization taking a dance break to PTD.

Thank you for this deep dive! Your enthusiasm and your thoughts about PTD helped me to appreciate it more now (I think at the time I was honestly kind of resentful about it because I interpreted it as a, oh pandemic's already over song since the situation in SK was vastly better than how the US was handling it and how my fellow Americans were over the whole "let's keep each other safe" part of how public health works, and not as an aspirational/hopeful song). I loled at WG2S being gleefully tossed at you, I remember BigHit was doing a "submit your video doing this dance challenge" and that was WG2S's entry for the compilation! They're having so much fun and you're clearly having a blast watching them :D Also you may want to watch this on your own time: in case you didn't know, I think BTS popularized the trend of reacting to their own music videos and old performances, and there's a Bangtan Bomb of them reacting and giving a bit of extra behind the scenes thoughts about PTD! kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4KZ1bqhlaiygLw.html So lol you can probably tell I'm a fan of the deep dive reactions, where you get to explore more about a song and go beyond a first impression. So I'm supportive of you doing that in the future, especially if you can include related Bangtan Bombs and the guys reacting to their own stuff (lol react-ception) :D (Bangtan Subs has subbed some of them, if the version on BangtanTV isn't subbed)

The guys themselves said that they were allowed to shoot this clip at night, closer to the morning, and in the afternoon they spoke at a meeting of the UN Assembly with a report. Have you noticed that there are exactly seven doors in the Assembly, as well as BTS participants? And on the lawn, real ARMYs danced with them - New Yorkers, who were invited as extras. They did without rehearsals, as half the world has already learned the simple choreography of the song and flooded the Internet with videos.

Thank you so much! When this song came out I loved it exactly for the "yeah it sucks, but we can dance!" mentality. It meant so much to me, I honestly couldn't understand why more people didn't like it. It's definitely my favorite of the English tracks.

Thank you very much John😊💜. I love your plan to do deep dives of BTS songs, let's freakin' do it!! 😂. I recall during their live performance at the UN after BTS delivered their speech the sign language interpreter smiled and stopped doing the sign language when BTS started doing the sign language choreo.. There were even videos of deaf people thanking BTS also for thinking of them too 😊.

When this song was released, it was like a deep breath of oxygene ! It was poppy, bright and hopeful, and it was really needed at this time. I remember crying the first time, when I see the girl keep off the mask !! I can understand why Ptd (with Dynamite et Butter) are not beloved by all the Army (specially non english speakers) : it's not because they are bad (they are not), but because after 7 years of struggles and hardwork, with more than 300 beautiful and meaningful songs with deep lyrics, poetry and philosophy, BTS exploded in popularity in the US and became mainstream with the only songs not in their langage and not songwriting by them. A little bit upsetting for some fans. But these 3 songs have attracted new listeners, who then turned into devoted fans, and even if they are not my favorite songs, I enjoy them. Specially Ptd, it really help me a lot in 2021 and I can't listen to it without a big smile on my face !

This is the only English song of theirs that i actually love. It was the perfect song at the time during the pandemic when we needed a glimmer of hope that there would be an end. I also loved the inference by the writer (Ed Sheeran) that we didnt need their permission to live our lives. I also get teary eyed when i hear this. It's one of my favorite MVs, and i never skip this song. Im not a fan of poppy sounding songs but this one hit soooo different. I LOVED IT

Think of the people most affected by the pandemic restrictions... schools/school children, restaurants, older people, anyone who delivered mail/packages, entertainers, and at the end of the MV it's the crew members of the MV shoot. I love PTD for the sentiment.
