Metal Shaping Tools!! SHAPE-O-MATIC Power Hammer (Helve Hammer) | FULL Demonstration & Overview

Let him know Japhands sent you!
On this episode of Make It Kustom, I’m giving you a full rundown on one of my favourite tools at the shop! The ‘Shape-O-Matic’ power hammer from Sosa Metalworks! This helve hammer is amazing for metal shaping and in this video you’ll see a demonstration on a circular piece of sheet metal, as I use various dies to shrink the metal into a dish shape. To help smooth it out, I finish it off on my planishing hammer.

Woodworkers: Now let's ensure all our safety guards and stops are setups and secure before we begin operations. Metalworkers: Let's spray this sharp metal with WD-40 before pushing it into a hand crushing hammer swinging at ludicrous speeds.... haha. LOVE your work man, keep that artform alive!

Sign me up. Great demonstration, enjoy watching a craftsman at work. Im a lifelong custom woodworker, built boats, kayaks and worked on corporate aircraft. Do custom work on metal lathes and mills but have not explored sheetmetal. Damn one can be creative. Very interesting processes. Thanks for sharing your passion and we craftsman and craftswoman know where the passion for sharing is coming from.

From your experience, to your attitude and positive vibes...it's awesome being able to watch not only what you do, but also how you do it. Very good instructing and teaching, I started here with your MIG welding video and now I've probably watched around 60% of your channel content!

Karl...You have an awesome channel..my favorite hands down!! I learn something with every episode. As Gene Winfield says so often, "every day is a school day". This video inspired me to purchase Christian's kit. Could you please clarify for me the intended wall thickness for the 2x2 top arm? I assume it's 1/8" but not sure. My plan, because I have the steel, is to do that piece in 1/8", the 4x4 upright in 1/4", and the other 2x2 bracing in 3/16". Does this make sense to you? Also, having used the machine for a while, would you suggest any changes such as working height or possibly adding 2 legs in the back so it could be moved on casters? Thanks brother for all you do and your help with my questions.

What kind differences are there between theese tool and the pneumatic Power Hammer?

Wow! I used to waterski with the guy who invented the thumbnail die. He sold the invention to Dake. Here's a video of Denis demonstrating the power hammer, he designed the whole unit and the dies. The was actually filmed in his garage in. You'll note the Drake unit is a lot quieter. RIP Dennis. ☹

I want to know more about making basic hand tools . I have a wood bat I want to build into a hammer, what are some common anvil shapes needed that I can add to my bottle base anvil/stump. How do you make a shaping sand bag?

  • @MakeItKustom

I usually make them as I need them. I use “T dollys” a lot which are round bar welded to flat bar. The bat will make a great shrinking hammer I’ll make some more videos on this stuff

Hard question: If you only had $8000 US to spend on shop tools for fabrication, metal shaping of all kinds for automobiles) what tools would you get. You can excluded welders, compressors, and any cheap hand held tools like metal shears, etc. I'm thinking of things like the one in this video, english wheel, brake/shear, stretcher/ shrinker...etc....

Noisey bugger but it only saved two years of hand hammering out the piece. Lol I'm gathering information to build a couple hammers for myself now I've decided to go with hollow tubing so I can fill with sand and reduce noise

Karl, what is the stroke on the eccentrics that drive the lever? What is the rpm and HP on the motor (1750?)?

  • @MakeItKustom

About 2” stroke and 3450 rpm but 1750 would be plenty.

Do you think you could make a really remedial video explaining the dies and how they are moving the metal to shrink it? You kind of lost me when you touched on it and it would be really helpful to see it explained again in more detail. I want to understand it but I’m just not grasping it very well. I’m sure it would help some other guys like me who follow you and may be struggling with understanding what’s happening to the metal when the hammers are going. Keep up the great videos!! 💪💪
