For the first time ever I'm reacting to Black Veil Brides' vocalist Andy Biersack - we take a look at their latest single, "Scarlet Cross" and I talk about why his voice actually sounds BETTER now than when he was younger and why their current style direction is reminding me of some of my favorite goth rock bands (H.I.M., 69 Eyes, Type O etc)

    Hi Mary i have a question. Are you the only contralto in metal?

  • @voicehacks

    @voicehacks

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don’t think so! But it’s exceptionally rare! Sometimes I think someone is a contralto but they end up really just being a mezzo when I look at the note range. For example I used to think Cammie Gilbert from Oceans of Slumber was a contralto but I have been her vocal coach and she is a mezzo! She just really loves to use that beautiful low end. But it’s possible the singer from Arkona might be, maybe too the vocalist of Madder Mortem and I think for sure Helen Vogt of Flowing Tears. Outside of metal we can look to folks like Cher, Nina Simone, Tracy Chapman, Annie Lennox - also as low as my voice is the timbre isn’t quite as dark as some of these folks so it’s possible some are dramatic Mezzos rather than contraltos? There are a couple of vocal colors that can fall in each category. I would love to see more low voices though! But even me, I operate more like a regular male tenor vocalist, rather than riding the low end all the time. It’s sometimes hard to tell who is mezzo vs actual contralto without looking at their vocal range closely in a lesson.

    My old bass player Chela Harper from White Empress is another true contralto I have met, but I have met very few!

    A good guide to tell if you are Mezzo vs Contralto is where you peak out on the low end. Most Mezzos lowest singing note usually is D3 if Middle C is C4. Sometimes it’s C3. Whereas a contralto really is like an androgynous voice that follows almost an identical range to that of a regular male tenor. So the contraltos can actually sing to A2/G2. Sometimes I can get F2 out while teaching lessons on a good day. But a contralto range would be like G2-A5 total or something like this. Whereas a mezzo is going to be more like D3-D6

Their vocalist (David) is a beast and the song really slaps. They are an independent band and recently came out with their first single. The band consist of Merel (ex-Delain, MaYaN, Purest of Pain and Gentle Storm), Joey (Drums for Delain) and David on vocals. I've been following Merel ever since her departure from Delain and I'm so happy to see her in Dear Mother putting out new music. It's fairly unknown yet, but I'd love to hear your take on David's vocals and the band!

    I can’t say I’ve heard this band before. The lyrical content and meaning intrigues me. Most of my beliefs are not structured in the “Christian” world. This song is clearly for the left hand side of the “Christian” world if you will, but I still dig it. “The world will stain us with the Scarlet Cross”. I can relate to that line because in an animistic view the cross is the sword that pierces the Earth. Certainly people of this belief system have attacked and tried to eradicate others for the last couple thousand years. So yea the lyrics are relatable for me. Sorry if this was an inappropriate comment, I just find this song intriguing. Speaking of artists and bands from Finland have you heard of Finntroll? Trollhammaren is by far my favorite. I’ve always wanted to re enact that song in a church with some like foam hammers 🤣

    Tbh I remember when I used to be a big fan of BVB, I noticed most of their songs have nearly the same construct in music sequence. I love their songs for nostalgia reasons but as a musician, I've seen them play nearly the same notes with different tunings or cut and paste into different parts so It may sound differently or when they do vocals they do the same thing :( I known its their signature sound and love their discography but it gets kind of repetitive from all the songs I've heard from them :(
