Does electroless nickel plating increase the impact resistance of 3d prints?
It turns out water washable resin is actually a very good substrate for electroless nickel plating!

Sadly Electroplating on 3d prints do not help with toughness. Try print the driver in Ultem 1010. Parts printed in that filament is impossible to destroy according to Zack Freedman.

Try FDM printing PETG. Anneal the print in powdered salt (there are videos on how to do that). Annealing will make the print essentially one solid piece by melting the layers together, and PETG has some flex so it has great impact resistance.

you don't have to edit out the breaths between each sentence. cool video otherwise.

This would absolutely help with strengthen the part if you properly electroplated the nickel with a thick base layer of copper then replate with nickel

Great video. I have the same setup as you but the electroless nickel is hopelessly inconsistent, even on solid steel parts. Buyer beware of Caswell, their products are garbage and their customer service doesn't understand how the products are supposed to work.

is tpu able to be metal plated? would think it'd hold upto the impact better but idk if its possible

I ordered from the same people but you got further than me. One thing I read is that the formation of bubbles can prevent plating it looks like that might be what happened.

Man I loved the sequel even more than the original. I am really hoping this becomes a trilogy. I didn’t fully follow if only that print material could be plated but would an FDM printed head with different material possibly handle impact better? Watching a bunch of these 3D printed airless basketball videos out there right now where pla shatters but some of the PLA tough manage to distribute force enough to bounce without cracking while tpu absorbs so much force they don’t bounce.

Not sure about PLA but I've read that etched PETG can work pretty good with electroless plating.

What material properties are you looking for? If you’re looking for actual metal, we are a startup 3d print house specializing in metal 3d printing. If you are interested, please reach out and check us out! We can print in stainless steel and have the ability to create this part with a variety of infill patterns to help reduce weight, yet still retain strength!

Can you get the plating thicker for strength?

In theory you can electroless nickel plate indefinitely if you have enough solution! But I think there are definitely easier ways to improve strength

Fun fact: some of the parts for early nasa rockets were built by electroplating over wax (or something similar). They needed thin channels within the metal so they manufactured the inner side of the rocket nozzle out of metal with ridges which they filled with wax and than they electroplated the rest of the needed thickness. Afterwards they just melted the wax and had their hollow channels. So it is possible to add real substance to the object that probably adds robustness. 8g of copper is not very much and the blotchyness probably means that the shape of the metal can't hold its shape by itself

@@Schwuuuuup That's crazy! And they actually sent that into space! I think the blotchyness was caused by excess heat which caused "plate out".
