METAL MUFF w/o THE TOP BOOST THANK YOU LORD

Trying out the Electro Harmonic Metal Muff Mini pedal! They removed the Top Boost! It's like a dream come true!
Disclaimer: EHX sent me this pedal but it's going back after demo has been made. EHX does not have a saying on how I make or what I say in my videos. This is not a sponsored demo.

I like the unique "grind" sound you get when you dial in the mids just right. It's sort of HM2-ish, yet a little cleaner on the top end. Great demo!

guitar it's a mid-range instrument, you don't need anything beyond 6000hz and anything below 80hz, because then you start conflicting with the cymbals and the bass

I got one and the low-mids seem scooped a bit too much, but those carefully dialed in mids really make up for it. You may want an EQ to keep the crunch somewhat under control. It certainly got the job done when I was playing along my favorite Nasum songs.

@@Helena-gk4uiyou absolutely need treble and presence beyond 6000hz and sub bass below 80hz in your guitar track. if you put your favorite guitar track through a 6000hz low pass, it'd sound terrible and lifeless. you also generally do want some level of sub-bass for your palm mutes. yes, if you have to much of either, it'll will also sound terrible. but everything needs to lock together correctly in the end. otherwise your mix wont "mix" and sound natural. as for the mid scoop with this pedal, it might be a little excessive for most peoples' tastes, you generally have to fight extremely mid-centric speakers in your guitar cabs and mid-centric pickups.
I love your honesty. Being a consumer it helps. Thanks Ola
Mids up high is almost in Swedish Chainsaw territory, but minus the fuzzy broken insanity sludge

That's the first thing I thought of as well
Killer demo, ola 😎🤘🏻🎸 and this pedal is a major improvement from the previous metal muff. The noise gate feature is so much better than the top boost(which sounds unpleasant). And I do dig the tone of this pedal by itself.
This pedal is my backup rig that I bring to every show, and I run it with a little poweramp pedal. It's a life saver, and honestly sounds good enough that no one even notices if I need to use it for a set (which unfortunately happens, as I have the WORST luck with my tube amps).

The top boost took me forever to work out but it can sound good. Turn the treble down, it will make the top boost is usable up to around 11/12 O'clock and really adds a lot of clarity especially when you've got the distortion cranked. The metal muff top boost is a great example of WAY too much of a good thing, but you can balance it because of how wide the EQ is.
Sounds killer!! Sure do see a lot of them on the used market here in the U.S. Thanks Ola Skål! 🎸👍😀
Sounds good. I've always been a fan of the EHX Metal Muff, used to have a Joyo clone that was surprisingly legit. Love the fuzzy, thick midrange sound
@HCkev

Joyo clones are all pretty legit. I use an Ultimate Drive for my boost pedal. It's supposed to be a Fulltone OCD clone, but its sounds slightly different. I like it!
Love this channel!!! Love the honesty and of course all about METAL!!!
I have this pedal and it's my favorite! Got exactly the tone I wanted, good chug and the noise gate is great.
With the OD and the gain turned down a bit it sounded really nice and gnarly.
This pedal would slay for nasty black metal or old school death metal tones. Gross, over the top, gained out to holy hell. I think I might have to get one of these. Cheers Ola!
Honestly it reminded me a lot of a Boss Metal Zone. It didn't sound like a fuzz at all. There is a great thick mid range tone to be had here though :)
@JulianA-tr6pt
3 ай бұрын
That's because it's a modified Metal Zone and has no connection to the Big Muff. Had one, distinctly MT-ish.
Thanks Ola! I appreciate your review ms and this is no exception. I bought the Nano Metal Muff for the 3 band eq plus gate and I feed it with a J Rockett Archer and I really like how they sound together !
Woah, it's cool seeing Ola use one of my first pedals. The East River Drive was, I think, the second pedal I ever bought with the Boss DS-1 being the first. I bought it maybe 10 yrs ago. It sounds pretty good on its own but I mainly used it for boosting distortion pedals. Nowadays I use the Spark pedal by TC Electronic to do that but I still love my ERD.
Love the sounds and love the shirt! let’s go!!!!
Sounds really cool. Really cool
That's one buff muff! Seems bottom end is lacking but brutal distortion gain. 🤘🤘🤘

_This seems like a good addition to using a Laney Dualtop amp to record some nasty yet brutal industrial metal. 🤘🤘🤘🤘 Definitely one pedal on my radar!_
Ola, would love to see you demo the Steel Panther 1987 pedal - just to hear your thoughts 🤘
You are best, Ola. Thanks.
Sounds surprisingly good!
Reminds me of a Boss Metal Zone, maybe I'll compare the two one day.
I owned a Micro Muff on a couple occasions. A 6 band MXR eq after the pedal makes it sound amazing

Same Mine is the chintzy beringher eq, but it works wonders to reign in some of the piercing highs.
I have bought this pedal and it's so great! I use it with my bass as well and it's a pretty cool little thing!

That Mid control gives a bit of an HM-2 vibe at the top of the sweep. Though that could be my less than ideal headphones 😅

Mike Matthew probably figured everybody is cloning them and selling them, I'm gonna get me some of that pie. And from what I could gather it worked. That tranche of fairly generic overdrive/fuzz pedals that EHX released around that time got them a lot of money that funded their crazier DSP stuff.

@@Tommy_Thunders Standard operating procedure of a boutique pedal company. Make yet another Tubescreamer/Big Muff/Fuzz Face. Slightly different voiced, maybe some switches or extra pots to make them stand out more.

Thing is not all tube screamers all equal. They all use different variations of the circuit, with varying components, gain stages, as well as different EQs. Check out Josh’s video on the bonsai pedal on the JHS KZread channel to learn more about them.
at first settings with the od as a boost sounds close an ENGL. Nice!
The gate is way better value over the top boost...I got a delux big muff with one and I like that feature.

Planning on grabbing 1 at some point
Sounds descent with the OD!
the East river drive is supposed to be an 808 TS clone. I use it to boost fuzz pedals.
MXR FullBore Metal also has a built in Gate. Mid Scoop button and 2 knobs that control mid's...as well as bass, treble, volume and Distortion. EHX improved the Muff with this compromise. Try them both out. They are about the same size and price.
love the t shirt dude
Yes!👍 It is doing it! 🤘Do it again!🤘
It sounds ok I think you should demo the budget pedal I found 😂it is quite sick I use it live mostly as it has a real balanced tone & the controls are really good on it & it cuts through better than a lot of expensive gear onstage and in rehearsal😁it's been in use with me for around 3 years,I used it on some of my thrashier swolas too as it works great for thrash riffs😁
The boosted up muff didn't sound that unusable, add an 10band EQ right after and you can tweak a lot of heavy tones!!
Definitely chugging my friend!
Nicely priced too!
Great video, very amusing

Great demo. Have or will you demo the mxr fullbore metal distortion pedal. It also has an on board noise gate.
big improvement! But wow is that EQ sensitive
Nice I give a Solid 6/10 !!!
I love you Ola.
Is a pretty standard distortion until you throw an octave up pedal, or an octave fuzz at low gain in front of it. Then you have a ghetto FZ-2.
You will have to try out the new Friedman JEL20 Jake E Lee Junior 20w Guitar Amp Head
That chug 😍
Wow electro harmonics have highly improved their shit!
You need to do the MXR Fullbore Metal. Pretty much same controls but 20 years earlier
I also have this pedal in my Collection. I is one of my Favorite beside Guardian Of the Wurm and the Fleshrot ;-)
I don’t know if you do but you should offer the solar x type (cheaper model) in blue (for dime) the red was a nice choice as well
Hi Ola, would love to see you testing the baghdad pedal from does it doom !_!
Metal muff total distortion..show🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah, that MID KNOB!! wonders
would be nice to hear the muffins in the effect loop of a tube amp
i have this pedal, is great for a beginer like me, the gate noob is really usefull, if you set the eq correctly and boosted with a overdrive (i have the boss blues driver BD-2 and then the overdrive/distortion OS-2) is a great distortion, i think is almost a fuzz with all the distortion noob on full, in the future i am gonna buy some tipe of eq, btu for the price is a good distortion.

The MM has so much distortion, I can't imagine what it sounds like with two OD boosts.
As a NYC'er, I do like the name "East River Drive"
I’ve tried the top boost engaged but not turned up much I think if it was voiced for more upper mids there’d be a lead guitar use
I sure would love to get one of your Vola guitars and can I get it in Barbie pink
It sounds like what happens if you combine an MT-2 and an HM-2. Both grinding/crunchy and gritty. It also has the compromise in regards to those two pedals - way too touchy controls crossed with useless controls that have to be maxed out.
Bruh.. i bought this pedal yesterday and because i let it in the heat it doesn't work. I waited months for this pedal and now im kinda sad.. The funny part here is while im contacting with the store i bought it from, i see a notification from your channel for this video😂😂. Olaaa, you're playing with meee
@claudevieaul1465
11 ай бұрын
It's very rare that a pedal stops working because you kept in the heat... 🤔 With that I think you mean in full sunshine? Shouldn't affect a pedal, I would think. Unless it got so hot inside that plastic parts warped, or maybe even some soldering came unstuck (but that's an extreme scenario)
@panagiotisioakeim834
11 ай бұрын
I believe it's from heat, because as a stupid man i am, i let in the hot sun inside the car and it got very VERYY hot. So i guess that's why. Anyways the store replaced it and im pretty happy. It's a very nice pedal, i truly recommend it.
Max Gain and you see Ola smiling🤘😎
Ola so just checking the overdrive before or after the metal muff on my pedal board?
Hey Ola, have you ever tried the Empress Heavy? If not it could be a pedal to look at one day, and if you have already, they have a new revised pedal, in a smaller package too.

wow nice.
Maybe the Top Boost is for you to plug it straight to the power amp but no the preamp 🤔?

What does the gate do exactly, take out unwanted fuzz?
This pedal slams hard
Hi Ola Englund Have you tried the ehx big muff rams head reissue
Is the top boost supposed to be a tube screamer? Also if not would you recommend me using a tube screamer without the top boost ?
Oh I laughed so hard to the ending, Ola throws the pick to make like a bunch of rebounds, so funny! 4:21
Is Ola tune to D standard in this video?
Cool. They made a Metal Zone clone pedal.
Ola your a beast 🤘🏻
Sounds pretty damn good at the very end when you had lower gain
What is the closest to the “end all” distortion pedals you’ve tried/used?
I would love to play with a Ola Muff😂
Hello ola make a video about Boss ns2
brutal shit man this cool pedl is useful
Very good Pedal. Keep it Simple
Ola, please make a Precision Bass chug.
What gauge and brand strings he use?
Honestly it sounds decent. Especially for the price! 😈🤘
How much usd sir this cost from nepal I wanted to know
For a hot sec, I mis heard ya, which makes me think,..... they should make an Oladrive Pedal. :)
I'd still turn the gain down a bit on the main pedal, and turn the gain on the OD to 9 o'clock, but that's just me. I tend to like my distortion a little smoother for my main tone, personally, with the low end very tight, mid forward, and a lot of low-mid information (I love Orange and Mesa amps for a reason), then I blend that with either a marshall/friedman type voiced amp/preamp or a turbo rat boosted with a chainsaw pedal.
Can try boss power stack..
I wonder how long those pedals will last before they break? I have had no luck with EHX.
@bbq4126
10 ай бұрын
My east river drive broke after a month or two. Not fault of mine but EHX quality control is shoddy.
Note to everybody - this pedal sounds like a Metal Zone because it is a modified Metal Zone. It features a different type of EQ, basically. C'mon it's clearly not a Big Muff circuit! I had the original, large Metal Muff w top boost back in probably 2011 when I was younger and getting into some metal playing. Yeah, that top boost was useless! I had it set to 0.5, where it'd just "change" the EQ rather than boost. I made a true bypass mod for it (probably one of the only OG MMs with true bypass ever) and ended up putting in on reverb years back. It's out there somewhere!
Sounds almost as good as my fillhore metal pedal
🤘🤘
Jhs legends bender into eq ❤️🔥
Why do people use expensive petals when we have axe fx and neural dsp?
I liked it when I heard it back in the day, I still like it. 🤷🏻♂️
I have a Big Muff from back in the late 90's and pll are always trying to buy it off me lol..I also have one of the original Digitech Whammy pedals and guitar isn't even my first instrument 😮 I'm a drummer but learned guitar so I could lay down and loop different ryhtms and riff ideas to practice over 🤘🧐✌️
Metal Muff by itself ain’t bad. It’s that damn top boost that gets the pedal a bad rep.
Has anyone compared this with the Metal Zone and the Ibanez Pentatone? 🤘
