i wish youtube was around when i was 11 playing this game in 1999. i think it took me a solid 6 months to finish, but it was the first game i was ever fully invested in and 100% completed. last time i played it i beat it in like 4 hours with breaks.

For anyone super panicked on time like i was or who aren't great at this game like myself, I had 2:21 when i got the last PAL key for the furnace, so when I finished I had 2:43, so just as long as you're in that ballpark you'll be fine. I had 2:44 on my last playthrough before facing Liquid and I ended on 3:01. so just keep those times in mind

dude thank you so much for this guide!! i remember beating this game on extreme when i was a teen and had forgotten how painful the comms tower section was lol. For those struggling with the comm tower ascent, rope section and subsequent outdoors corridor, you can try the boba skip, saves you 2 minutes and health. Also, for those who want to play on integral, if you're playing after already beating the game once, you'll notice that enemy placement and patrols have changed, to change this, select new game, and hold L2 and R2 (LT and RT) before selecting the difficulty, this will make enemy patrols go back to normal. now all i have to do is do all 300 vr missions lol . amazing guide dude, thanks. earned a like and a sub

played this so many times as a kid, and knew the first section due to replaying the pizza hut demo disc so many times, that i was able to get big boss rank on extreme and not even realize i was going for it. when i finally get this - after they update it some more - then hopefully I will still have it in me to destroy this game lol. great run though and always fun to see others just genuinely play/enjoy games instead of trying hard for them.

This is a nice trick for those who don't know. When Snake is choking out each guard with camouflage on the elevator and he breaks their necks, there is a sequence where Snake slowly let's go of the guard. If you want to transition out of that sequence quickly after snapping a guard's neck, equip a weapon and unequip it fast by double tapping on the R1/RB depending on which console you are playing. This is something I learned when I was kid in the 90's when this game released. You can do it to any guard in the game but seeing that he was shot a few times in this run though I wanted to highlight that.

Also when droping them to the floor, yeah, the animation is faster than the neck break but it makes for a smooth "cqc" drop

Nice video! There is actually a tip can be given that can help a lot. When you take down a guard with square button, you can skip the animation but equip a weapon fast. This helps a lot, especially on the fight of tower.

I love how we can quickly equip the pal card near the smelting pit to quicken the card color change quickly. Considering its the longest path to complete the metal gear operation start up.

I’ve played this game for 15+ growing up and I’ve never been able to achieve BB Rank… you’ve helped usher me into that. I only failed because I thought you HAD to kill the soldiers in that beginning sequence with Meryl

This was enjoyable. The approach was pretty original and the narration was great. Despite you saying stun gun. I've played this game a lot of times in the past, but only in the "normal way" which involves taking a lot of damage. Gonna try some of these tricks. I was able to get top ranks in MGS 3 and Peace Walker without guides but for this one and MGS 2 I need some ideas outside. :)

you can use the card board boxes to travel in this version too. Jump into the back of a truck, and equip a box. Then just sit there and don't touch the controls. After a few seconds, a guard will come and drive the truck. Where the truck goes depends on which box you equip. #1 is to the heliport, #2 is to warhead storage, and #3 is to the snowfield.

Played through this masterpiece so many times over the years, best I was able to get was Fox rank. Never could finish an Extreme run. I may have to boot it up and refresh myself and see if I can finally get the coveted Big Boss.

,........I can't fricking believe that Raven can be cheesed so easily.... In the first elevator fight, you can strangle the guard just as you did, then equip and unequip weapon to drop him fast and go onto the next enemy. You don't take damage. For the rat, you can claymore the rat entrance/exits and he'll just die the moment he gets out. Great video man! Thumbs up.

I remember trying to finish this on extreme years ago and got stuck on the lift part where you had to fight the soldiers wearing the stealth suits. I only had a tiny bit of health and no rations so i kept dieing. Must jave tried a hundred time 😅

I am making my way through Big Boss for the first time in over 20 years and I’m mortified of this part coming up 😂 I am hoping to complete a run without using any Rations but I just may use one in this part when I get to it. I remember it being a nightmare.

​​@@kobiblade No, Integral was a Japan-only Re-release of MGS that included a second disc of all VR missions. The first commenter is referring to the JP-region version of the Original MGS1 release, which did not have a difficulty selection because it only had One difficulty. That difficulty is the equivalent of 'Easy' in other regions, but allows you to get Big Boss rank if you meet the other requirements. Part of the reason they even Made integral was to give Japanese players the features that were added to other regions' versions of the original, like multiple difficulties, and they added the VR missions to sweeten the deal. Since the US and EU versions already had the features that Integral added, Konami just released the VR mission disc by itself as 'VR Missions' in the US and 'Special Missions' in the EU (with some minor tweaks to each.) If you have the recent Master Collection version, you can access the original JP version by choosing the normal 'Metal Gear Solid' and picking Japanese as the language.

Emulators are amazing. This once very pixaleted game now looks all sharp and crisp.

After the codec at 1:38:28 you get the elevator cutscene but immediately after that the camera spots and shoots me before i can even move, ive tried multiple times and even stood in different spots but every time i get spotted Edit: i finally beat the game and got the fox achievement but the stealth suit achievement didn't unlock :( i had the same issue on my first play through with the bandana achievement not unlocking, niw ill never have 100%

In the last part (liquid snake) with the car if you use the second joystick you can move the guards. Try it yourself.

Which version are you on ? I started playing on Integral with your guides but it appears that the guards emplacement is different between my game and yours. So maybe it is because of the Integral version

The TORTURE is BY FAR the TOUGHEST PART of MGS no matter the difficulty! I did it on Extreme but had to resort to "Auto-Fire"! ODDLY ENOUGH, the game just "lets you by" with doing that! Though, I DID find a "little trick" known as the "Spoon" trick. Never tried it, though! If you can PASS the "Torture" in MGS, the REST is EASY! On the staircase a REALLY GOOD STRAT is to use LAY "Claymores" behind you as you run. GETS 'EM EVERYTIME!

1:50:25 You can actually ignore the guard in the middle here and kill him last. Although hes shooting bullets none of them will actually hit you

You have to rapidly equip and unequip a weapon and you never actually step on the grate because the animation is bugged

It's amazing to see how many people are still complaining about the MGS collection when it was announced that the game was going to be a direct port, not a remaster or update. Like, it wasn't a "gotcha" moment, they were very transparent about it being THE ps1 version from the get. People cry about game preservation, but when they get it it's just not enough to appease people because they actually wanted a rebuild or remaster, or even a remake a la Resident Evil 2/3/4 and the new versions.
