The Phantom Pain is the perfect title for the game where he loses everything because, while his body may recover, and he may find a new team and get revenge: He will NEVER fully heal or forget who he lost. They will always be his Phantom Pain.

My Word is Gospel: someone did their research good job

Did ya know that there's constant *red flags* in the game that you're not playing as Big Boss? Like how the 6'3 Big Boss is shorter than every enemy in the game. Or the fact that Big Boss never wore a vest prior, nor tucked his pants into his boots, but Venom Snake does. Furthermore there's the fact that Venom Snake seems completely lost to many references, I.E. "engravings give you no advantages whatsoever" and Venom Snake looks completely lost. My personal favourite is the fact that Venom Snake smokes an Electronic Cigar. This is a reference to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker when Huey tried to get him to smoke an electronic cigarette, Big Boss replies what I feel about Venom Snake: *i don't like imitation. The real thing is always better.*

Venom Snake has many scars and that shrapnel “horn” embedded in his head that couldn’t be removed without causing a brain hemorrhage, and let’s not forget that prosthetic hand. In MGS4, when we see Big Boss again, his hand is perfectly fine, and his head is hornless and free of scars. Venom Snake has a green eye; Big Boss is known for his blue eye(s). When Venom asks who Ishmael is, he responds “You’re talking to yourself.” Venom Snake is very quiet and reserved while Big Boss fires of jokes and quips like ammunition.

Someone with only casual interest in the subject aren't guaranteed to go back and watch the other two parts, but if you just have videos specifically focusing on something like 2D or 3D MGS games then they won't feel like they have to be caught up on previous parts.

You missed the Pequod reference from Moby Dick.

I had no idea about the "Snake, that was perfect" line in Ground Zeroes, despite S Ranking the mission. Why? Because I wanted to see if I got an S Rank asap to see if if I made a mistake and had to play the mission again. Also didn't know about Kojima scrolling the missions on the Menu, that's pretty cool

Your Next Line is playing the games makes understanding the story QUITE difficult, unless you know what you are looking for, and do multiple playthroughs. Also the vast overload of cutscenes with (seemingly) unrelated images, names, places thrown around make it very difficult out of context. Maybe I was too young when I played the PS1 and PS2 1-3 versions, but still. Without that video I'd still be confused as hell ;)

Kojima might be insane, but hot damn, you gotta respect his willingness to tackle heavy and disturbing topics in regards to war, offendatrons be damned.

there's only one thing wrong here: 4:10 the phantom pain isn't preceded by peace walker (directly). it is preceded by ground zeroes that, in its entirety, is a direct sequel to peace walker. Bear with me, the full chronological order of MGS goes like this (Attention, spoilers ahead): 1. Operation Snake Eater and Death of The Boss (1964) 2. FOX Unit Dismantle (Portable Ops - 1970) 3. Peace Walker Incident (1974) 4. Mother Base Invasion (Ground Zeroes - 1975) 5. Outer Heaven, (The Phantom Pain - 1984) 6. Death of the Phantom and Destruction of Metal Gear (1995) 7. Comatose of Big Boss and Obiteration of Outer Heaven (Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake - 1999) 8. Shadow Moses Incident (The Twin Snakes - 2005) 9. Manhatann Tanker Incident and Deaths of Solidus Snake and Emma Emmerich (Sons of Liberty - 2007 to 2009) 10. Guns of the Patriots Incident and Deaths of Big Boss, Major Zero and Solid Snake (2014) 11. Raiden's Revenge (Metal Gear Revengeance - 2018)

The one-shot in Ground Zeroes' intro seems to me more of a reference to the final scene of the movie Sacco e Vanzetti, which has that exact same song "Here's to You" playing in said scene as well.

It's weird they touched on the Moby Dick references but didn't mention the whole Moby Dick Studios thing.

In addition to being a "Rope" reference, the long single take style Kojima employed in TPP was useful for performing tricks to fool the viewer, as well. Things like models appearing and disappearing, jumping around, and having impossible physics often goes on just outside the camera. Beware doing any more DYK stuff with Metal Gear Solid V! There is a lot of deception involved in the game's story, presentation, and operations. For example, the game isn't in 1984. The Phantom Pain starts when V comes to in that hospital... but it's 1986. There's a hallucination of Paz that will show up on Mother Base at some point and she's described as being stuck in a time loop, where she still believes it to be 1974. Since she isn't real, then that "stuck in time" symptom is one put there by Venom himself, who is hallucinating all this. Venom knows he is stuck in 1984, reliving the same day. The proof you can get for 1986 is in the tapes you can find--the song The Final Countdown can be found in a tape as soon as you start the open-world segment of the game, and that song didn't release until 1986.

I really enjoyed the way the game played and honestly didnt paticularly care that you werent big boss cause they pulled the big boss but not big boss trick a couple times before so not massively surprising. Although having said that you can clearly see there was supposed to be a little more to the game but we wont see it and at least the series didnt finish with metal gear rising so we should be thankful of that.

did you know that when you play mgs5: TPP, on mission 15 when your at the part of extracting the truck in Africa. you can actually hear the SAME radio broadcast in P.T. no BS. I tripped out!

Als worth mentioning, there's a radio in the second map that plays the same radio message from the PT demo. There's also a cassette of the chandelier swinging.

I just rewatched the Quiet trailer and i noticed, not one single cut frame. It's all one continuous shot!

You obviously didn’t. Characters like Zero, Paz, Miller, and Big Boss get some major character development. We learn that Big Boss is a dick, Zero isn’t actually that evil, Miller is going crazy, and Paz was more than just a double agent. But whatever, apparently it;s cool to shit on this game.

+Yamaneko81 been an avid MGS fan since i was a kid (damn near since it came out on ps1) and have beaten every main game multiple times and loved them. Its not that we hate it (well i dont at least) its that its a MAJOR disappointment, right down the marketing slogan. You go in expecting a next-gen metal gear experience, a well polished story, nice cinematics, some light hearted humor midst a rather grim setting, the works. With V, you get repetitive mission after mission, ruined characters, little cutscenes that are just throwaways, a silent MC which really doesnt work, just overall, and VERY disappointing end to a well loved series, the gameplay is phenomenal, but the maps are so empty and barren theres nothing to really do, yeah its in a desert, but its in a soviet occupied afghanistan, wheres the skirmishes between soviet and afghan forces? wheres the cave networks? and why do the bases all have more or less one or 2 buildings to go into that have only 1 room? i saw quite a few hallways that could've lead into an installation for you to explore and whatnot. This is why long time fans of the series dislike it (and not saying the other games didnt have faults either, this one just has an overabundance of faults)

+Yamaneko81 Exactly. If you've played through everything in all the other Metal Gear games, the true ending of MGSV would make sense right away, explaining what has been hidden in previous games. E.g. how Big Boss survives Outer Heaven, etc. Kojima is a genius. MGSV is indeed unfinished, but definetly not bad.

Great work!! I waited until I finished the game to watch this. Another reference to Moby Dick: the helicopter codename is "Pequod," which is also the name of the craft that Ahab and Ishmael ride in the novel.

MGSV does take place in 1984 as the game directly states this multiple times

You compare Metal gear to the likes of Hitchcock and Moby Dick... Its an over-convaluted anime style story with no real characters in it, just archatypes and parodies of personality. Every character has one motive and view and it never changes, or develops. Japan cant write characters or people, never have they been able to.

Am i the only one that feels its kinda...redundant to make an MGS movie? The games are already 99% cutscene, 1% actual game. (Note that i havent played one of the games before, mainly because im the type of gamer that skips most cutscenes in every game and just cares about gameplay and controls so if i say anything wrong, correct me). It just seems weird taking a cinematic game thats mostly just a movie that you play for 2 minutes and then move on to another super super long cutscnene.

Well yeah, most people who like MGS like story over gameplay and know what they're getting into when they buy it. Its just to me story is the least important part of a game. You could have the worst story ever and have good gameplay and controls and youd be a good game to me. On the flipside, you could have the best story in gaming history but if your gameplay sucks then its a bad game to me.

+Jira If you have a problem with cutscenes than I would say avoid Guns of the Patriots, but other than that you should probably play all of them. They're pretty good.

Yeah, if i play a game im skipping all cutscenes. If i want a story ill go to a book, comic, or movie. I go to games for good controls and gameplay.

MGSV is anything but cutscenes dude. As someone who also hasn't played any other game in the franchise, I was skeptical about playing it since it's usually a cutscene heavy game. And apart from the opening hour, MGSV barely has cutscenes. And the gameplay is bloody amazing! I really wanna play the older games now, even if it has long cutscenes.

i doubt chapter 3 was anything. maybe it was leftover from the ground zeroes/phantom pain split. And for the story, yes the story is ok in chap 1. but in chap 2... oh no

MGSV was excellent and a ton of fun! Maybe if you cant have fun with games anymore you should go outside in the real world and play there with your friends, which is more fun then any game ;)

I doubt anyone's caught on, but the name "Ground Zero(s)" is a term used by companies when talking about the starting point. Couple that with the Logo Disappearing Mission, and you get a deeper meaning that Kojima wanted to portray with the smaller chunk of the game.

One big trivia you missed froum Ground Zeroes, aside the Deja vu: -Skull Face says two things exactly as Big Boss said to Chico when he first emt him in Peace Walker: -Growing up means choose the way you'll live. -The Pain take the best of us. I first heard about this franchise in high school as a few friends of mine were fans. Although I never got to playing a single one as I am not a console player. Hopefully one day they'll all be brought over to Steam.
