Yeah I agree, especially with the fact that standards can still exist and they’re even good in most ways but elitism in the metal community is just really someone proving they’re the most metal of them all and they want a trophy for it.

It's a sad desperate attempt at trying to be special and "better than" others simply based on your taste in music. Which is ludicrous considering music is art, and art is subjective.

I just got into Darkthrone not too long ago after listening to A Blaze In The Northern Sky. I really liked it and am exploring their other albums. With Burzum, Fallen was a really good album, I thought, and even his latest project of The Ways Of Yore was very pleasant to listen to (though it is not a metal album).

I am slowly exploring into Black Metal tryna get into it, So Far I got into Greek Black Metal band's Lately been saturated with N.W.O.T.H.M, Heavy Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Death/Thrash Metal, Death Metal, Power Metal, Nu-Metal, Gothic Metal and Alternative Metal, Avant-Garde Metal and Doom Metal. So far these genres sticks into me and I realized elitist mindset disregards every rights to listen into metal that they like and that is just sucks because Metal elitists would go and tell people they're being a poser for liking bands those metal elitists didn't like, derogatory🤔.

The funny thing is these people think they're keeping the genre "pure" by "weeding out false fans" or some lunacy like that. Insulting people who are just getting into a genre isn't "keeping it pure" it's making the elitist look like an immature sociopath.

I guess another problem with the metal community (especially on social media) is that everyone is beeing a jerk to oneanother because of the bands or the subgenre they listen to. Not much tho, but it still gets on people’s nerves. On the other hand if I see someone posting about a band I don’t like, I just tend to leave the person in peace and don’t get triggered. I mean what’s the point of hating on someone because of the bands he listens to? I like the shit i like. And so does the next person. I’m fine with that.

Yes. Definitely is a big problem with people on social media being unnecessarily negative and rude over differing opinions and musical tastes. It's incredible the amount of insecure knuckle-draggers congregate around the Metal scene (considering Metalheads are SUPPOSED to be one of the more intelligent music fans). Like, you I don't usually make a big deal about other people not sharing the same musical preferences as I do. Shows maturity and confidence.

Of course. I used to hate on people for beeing into different bands than me. But with the years in the scene comes the revelation: why beeing a dick to others? Just enjoy metal for what it is. People ain’t gonna change on command.

It’s still happening today. Music is supposed to be fun. It seems to me that enlists have something to prove and that’s why they’re so serious about it. I just like music and I happen to gravitate towards metal. Elitists are making the experience of discovering new music less fun.

Or at least that was how I saw it when I fully started to embrace myself as a metalhead when I was 17. What you're saying here is pretty accurate. A really sad truth.

As a personality trait. Dumb asses like you would clam to be goth with out understand shit about the sub culture. Then again we live in any age in which ever one clams to be a part of a culture they don't even live or are not a part of. Kind of like how someone from Africa or the Middle East or the USA will go to Norway live there for a few years say they are Norwegian yet not live one damn fuck part of the culture or learn of the history. No they spend more time trying to change it because they are a special little snow flake. You either are a metalhead or you are not. You are either Goth or you are not. You are either Norwegian or you are not. You are either Japaneses or you are not. You can't be half way anything. So yes it is about being unique and being some that is different. If I wanted someone who was 100% like me I would clone myself. I want someone to have there own tastes like and dislikes and so on. If they don't how the fuck I'm I going to find something new or hear a new band that from a total different genre of music that I may happen to end up liking? I

I am 100% with you on all the points you made in this video and I'm glad since I tend to favor death metal more so I don't see too much of that because I think it's more of a black metal problem over all. I love old school death metal with a passion but I don't tell people to only listen to shit from 1989 to 1994 or that all modern day metal bands sucks because you will only be missing out on good bands of today. In short people should listen to whatever they enjoy and not shit on other people's tastes because art is very subjective and has complicated layers to it.

I agree with you that elitist need better arguments than, "you like gay music, fuck off." that said, there are actual arguments that actually do explain why band x is different and prefered to band . It's still subjective in the end but at least then there's an attempt to be objective. Where we fall out is how to deal with bullies, that metal should just be all inclusive, and should always be nice about it. You had pointed out early in the video "at least they're not listening to country and rap". Even you make your own musical filters. metalheads have every right in the world to segregate themselves. my only issue is when they insult my intelligence by stating opinion as fact. Bullies have to be dealt with. Standing up to a bully, no matter how much bigger and stronger does something very positive and helps us grow. that is not a billboard for bullies. just pointing out how empowering it is to take matters into your own hands. being the bigger man snd being able to walk away with your head held high is an invaluable experience. something you'll have with you the rest of your life.

  • @BlackMetalRebellion

Yeah everyone has their filters and lines they draw on which they prefer things. And the people are free to segregate themselves from others. But when they try to start forcing their lines and filters on other people and trying to segregate others from things is where it goes a little far.

Metal elitism in particular is its own brand of elitism. Sure, the normal form of elitism is mostly snobby, and really crass. But, Metal elitism is a different story. It's not just snobby. It's insults with a touch of entitlement. I genuinely don't like Black Metal music, not because of the bands themselves, or the sound, I just can't get into it. The bands that perform Black Metal are certainly talented, and some probably deserve more recognition than meets the eye, but when I say that to some people, they get this scornful look of embarrassment. "You don't like *insert random Black Metal band here*? You're a poser." This mentality shouldn't exist, but alas it will, but we should discourage this. Not everyone is going to like the same genres or subgenres as you. Some people may enjoy Metal but in more moderation, the same people who listen to Nu Metal might not like Behemoth. They're still metalheads.

Metal is an elite form of music by its very nature, if elitism develops it's because people are offended that the shit forms of it ride the coat tails of the good, eg, the plague of terrible death metal of the early nineties. It's not a big deal, the scene has always been fractured.

And yet, unfortunately, saying, well at least you're not listening to country is an elitist attitude. We metalheads tend to do that to fans of mellow music as if it's no thing. Bottom line, no one should give anyone shit for what someone finds enjoyable to listen to. I personally don't care what anyone thinks of my taste in music. I like Emperor and Katy Perry..gasp! Also, this is nothing new. I may have already mentioned to you that this fight was going on between fans of Slayer and Venom with fans of Motley Crue and Twisted Sister. It was silly then and it's silly now.

BlackMetalRebellion I didn't say you were. I was saying metalheads in general do this. It was a comment I was getting ready to make before you even mentioned it. It is a fact that a lot of metalheads do look down on other people's taste in music if they do not listen to heavy metal. Reread what I write and I can see how you thought I was speaking of you specifically, Sorry for the confusion. Was just pointing out that some of us accept this attitude more towards other types of music when it's basically the same elitism. I was once guilty of this in the past myself.

Correct! Bravo! RESPECT! that is what it is!!!! I totally agree!!! The beauty of a conversation is to exchange and share diferent opinions. Some will be agreed, others will be disagreed, and we will still be friends! Metal is a brotherhood, and metalheads are brothers! Why to put somebody down b'coz he is a newborn metalhead? Why to pretend that I am a professor infront of somebody who may knows less from me? For sure there are as well others who know more about me. Would I feel nice if they put me down b'coz I know less from them? Helping and supporting eachother, that's the spirit. But under some cases, we should give negative opinions. Like what the band "Body count" did. I mean, come on it really ruins the whole magic of metal vocals as I'm hearing ice-tea to rap on a well-done music. Another example: it was a channel using the word "blablabla metalhead show" but the only things I heared in that channel was anything else but nothing about metal reviews, suggestions and stuff. Random situation and most of time mentioning pop artists and shit. As a subscriber I argue "how can u call youself a metalhead, when you are not saying anything about metal?" next thing, she made a video 2 hours long crying about my massage, and she finally changed her channel name :))))))))))

I personally know how it feels to be bullied by others. Being a metalhead, less friends and less people are looking and taking us seriously. But being a person with disabilities, and blind (ability of vision 10%) plus being a metalhead, they are looking and acting like I m an unearthed creature. So, personally I say "Bring me more people like those, b'coz I love it that I am a niddle in their eyes"
