    Hello Bemusing Bill [ @BemusingBill ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community 🤘

    Hello BemusingBill, Nightwish Army Italian Division reporting for duty. I can give you some small answers to your questions before General Gabriel Bardac arrives to give you all the information relating to this band. This concert was played in front of more than 82,000 people but believe me any of their concerts, in front of 100 or 100,000, is always of the same very high quality. The band is of Finnish origin and in 2013 the line up was: Tuomas Holopainen (Finland) on keyborads (he is called the Metal Mozart and he is the songwriter of 95% of their songs), Marko Hietala (Finland) on bass, Emppu Vuorinen (Finland) on guitar, Jukka Nevalainen (Finland) on drums, Troy Donockley (UK not present in this song) and last but not least the Queen of the Valkyries, the Goddess of symphonic metal, the wonderful and unique Floor Jansen (The Nederlands ) on vocals. The symphonic instrumental part, if I'm not mistaken, was recorded in London by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. You talked about "Phantom of the Opera", well, it's actually the Nightwish version of the original world-famous song. You can find two different Nightwish versions of this song live, one with Nightwish's first lead singer (Tarja Turunen) and a second recorded in 2022 at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam with Floor Jansen. Two masterpieces. Welcome to our wonderful family and get ready .... the Nightwish Army is very numerous and ready to shower all the love and emotions possible on you. Oh I was forgetting.....the goosebumps you felt are called "Floorgasm" . BTW very good reaction so new subscriber here ;-)

    Hey and I hope you continue on your Nightwish journey, they are incredible. I discovered them almost 4 years ago, now I can't get enough. The guitar is a Warwick, and they are out of Finland. The keyboardist is the founder Tuomas, he is the songwriter/founder/composer for the band. The singer is Floor Jansen from the Netherlands, and the greatest vocalist I have ever heard. She was classically trained so does opera, she also loves metal, and can sing any style or genre of music out there. She also growls when she wants, nothing is vocally beyond her. Great reaction!! Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" is a master of emotion and melody), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor Jansen can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and bassist Marco Hietala is a Finnish metal legend and also has an incredible voice (and when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). Their studio tracks are great, but their live performances are phenomenal, Nightwish is one of the best live bands of all time. I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). To get a sample of their diversity I highly recommend any of these live performances, which are some of my personal favorites: (From Wacken 2013): Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Amaranth, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Ever Dream; (From Wembley 2015): 7 Days To The Wolves, Yours Is An Empty Hope, Nemo, Elan, My Walden, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Shudder Before The Beautiful, The Poet And The Pendulum; (From Tampere 2015): Sleeping Sun, The Islander; (From Buenos Aires 2018): I Want My Tears Back, Dead Boys Poem, Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean; (From Tampa): Sahara; (From Hellfest 2022): Tribal, How's The Heart.

    From Nightwish,there is two version from "Phantom Of The Opera" and yes,it is cover from that famous song.Both versions are great but my opinion is that if choosing "End of Era" version from year 2005, you can also find how great singer Marko Hietala (bass guitar) is. Generally, what ever live performance from Nigthwish you choose(Specially with vocalist Floor Jansen),it is pure warm ear-honey. My personal opinion is that Floor Jansen is not human,she is Goddess of Rock who had took human body and just pretending to be human for us,mortals.

    Bassist Marco Hietala plays a Warwick Vampire bass. In some songs he also plays a Warwick Infinity / Panthera double-neck bass and guitar. The Wacken Open Air in Germany and the Hellfest Open Air in France are the biggest metal festivals in the world and every metalhead should visit them once in his life. Both are always sold out with about 85 - 90,000. If you want to get a ticket, you have to be extremely fast and extremely lucky, because after about 2 hours there are no more tickets. I would like to give you a recommendation for Phantom of the Opera, because there are two versions by Nightwish. One is from 2005 with the first lead singer Tarja and this version is more metal than classical. The second is from 2022 with Floor as the frontwoman, as well as guest vocalist Henk Poort (original Dutch Phantom). This version is classic and Floor delights everyone with a 12-second high note as the highlight. I would recommend you check out both versions, because both are absolutely world class! They also have a multi instrumentalist who wasn’t on stage for this number who is English. The bass that Marco was playing is made by Warwick. The guitar that Emppu plays is his own signature model made by ESP. This band will amaze you. They mix metal with different genres, from the heavy to folk. I think you would appreciate one of their more heavier numbers. So, perhaps “Romanticide” from the same concert. It also shows Emppu can shred with the best of them. I first discovered this fantastic Finish band a couple of years ago through a reaction video and fell in love with them right away. My wife, Carol, and I had the wonderful opportunity to travel from Phoenix to see them live at the historic Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on May 18th, 2022 and the show was incredible. I highly recommend that you read all of Gabriel Bardac's comment and follow the link he provides at the end. That will take you to his community page where he provides many more links to other fantastic Nightwish live perfomances. Nightwish is the rare band whose live shows are even better than their studio productions. Hope to see you back again soon with another Nightwish reaction.

    Welcome to Nightwish world, have fun exploring their music. Definitely all-time great band. They are not well known in the US but very big in Europe and South America. They have been doing world tours since 2000. Important to know that they are very versatile and stylistically they go all over the map. It's called symphonic metal but these genre-this-genre-that talks really don't mean a lot with this band.

    Welcome in the gorgious world of Nightwish. Your life will never be the same again! I divide my life in the period before Nightwish ( b.n.), and the period after the discovery of Nightwish (a.n.). The period of enlightenment that is. Not really joking actually. My life really got more beautiful when I discovered Nightwish. All their songs out of this world. And via Nightwish I discovered Ayreon which is another journey that runs perfectly well alongside Nightwish. This part of the music scene, symfonic metal and progrock is just energizing and amazing. And the Dutch metal Goddesses are mindblowing. I am talking about Floor Jansen, Anneke van Giersbergen, Simone Simons, Marcela Bovio, Sharon ten Adel..... It must be the food in the Netherlands..... Most of them grow into the clouds and demolish concrete walls with their voices..... and at the same time pour your tears out with sheer beauty. The combination of Floor with Nightwish.....alien. Not from this world. It is lonely at the top.....

    I have the DVD of this show and the entire 90 min set is absolute magic - you can't go wrong with Wacken 2013. Nightwish were headlining this particular evening so I suppose a large number were there to see them primarily, but this being a festival it's clear that they enthralled the vast majority of the other festival goers too. They've been around since the late nineties and have had 3 lead singers in that time - current singer Floor Jansen took over in 2012. BTW Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime is in my top 10 albums. Would've been great to see Floor & Geoff Tate sing together when he was at his peak.🇬🇧🤘🤘

Then, like you I got a recommendation after watching a Megadeth reaction - also for GLS with Floor. Actually they were closing the whole festival. They came on stage after Alice Cooper. This was one of the 6 foot 1 inch Floors first appearance with the band in Europe and whilst many of the Waken crowd would have know her from her 1st band - After Forever - (which she joined at 16) and her own band - ReVamp - many were eager to hear the latest iteration of Nighwish.

    Hey Bill, greetings from UK Thank you for checking out my favourite band 😉 Since you are interested in their kit, here is a video that 'Gear Gods' made whilst checking out their kit. The main difference is that the drummer you just saw (Jukka pronounced Yoo-ka) no longer plays due to ill health. He is still in management with the band. He passed the baton to his good friend and mentor Kai Hato (formerly of Wintersun). The drum kit in the 'Gear Gods' video belongs to Kai kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJictc2fkqu-esY.htmlsi=TtN4YyqjHPX3HP5X Nightwish play with a backing track which has the orchestral sounds and various other sounds which might be required for the song. This allows them to have their rich, full, multi layered sound without having to have the orchestra on tour with them. All orchestral pieces were composed by the keyboardist Tuomas and recorded by 'The London Philharmonic Orchestra'

    "A little bit about me [...] Prog Metal[...]" So, sooner that later we will meet again when you react to "The Day That The World Breaks" by Ayreon, because in my book, that song is the very definition of Prog Metal. And once you have seen it, for sure you will agree. I know...a bold statement, but true none the less ;-P

  • @WNYretiree
    @WNYretiree7 ай бұрын

    OK, that was a great reaction and I have subscribed in the hopes that you will travel further along the Nightwish road. This is a band of exceptional musicians who play for the song. You will find, as you explore further that each member of this band has complete mastery of his/her craft. You will find that every song is different, and there isn't a bad song in the bunch. This song is just the very tip of the iceberg. I agree that with your musical background, you will probably like Romanticide from this same concert. And, by the way, Marko, the bassist/male singer plays a Warwick. The guitarist, Emppu, plays his own special ESP. They have several versions of Phantom on KZread. IMO the best is the 2005 version from their End of an Era concert. Best Phantom ever.

    Mentioning some European and Skandinavean bands with a high level, huge catalogue and great live reputation, they are at the moment headliners all over the world and have lots of reaction material on the tube: Opeth (Sweden), Gojira (France), Nightwish (Finland), Jinjer (Ukraine), Rammstein (Germany). The thing with Nightwish is that you still have around 25 live performances to go that are all very impressive and surprising as well, without mentioning the numerous side kicks. Fine reaction, succes en have lots of fun.

Love old school Genesis as well, the Peter Gaberial years for sure. I just had to smile when you kept asking for more info on this incredible band because I knew that the army would be arriving and giving all of the info you asked for. Also like you when I first heard this song I had goosebumps as well and a tear in my eye. When a band and a singer do that to you you have no choice but to be a fan. FYI those goosebumps are called a Floorgasms and if you keep checking into Nightwish and her other projects you will have many more of them. Yes you really should check out Phantom of the Opera both the version with the original singer Tarja and the most recent version with Floor and Henk Poort. Both are awesome.
