That piece with the three tabs on it you found after the Crucifix is part of a Rosary, probably the same one the Crucifix came from. Very nice finds, though....

I think the beads were wood sadly, I took a sifter to the hole after finding those bits and nothing else came out.

Cool! Yeah, definitely piece of rosaries. You might still find the beads there unless they're wooden or rose beads then that would be a challenge. Great hunt!

I actually pulled a ton of dirt out of the hole and sifted through it for beads or other metal bits but didn't find any. Judging by the old look of the cross I suspect they were wood and rotted away with time.

It always makes you thankful to wear those gloves when you find a knife open lol... great assortment of finds Ryan!

Thanks! The park it was in is more or less the giant public lawn of Omaha's first major water treatment plant so I think it's original to the plant.

Thanks! Even though many would call this park hunted out, when I go for those ultra deep VDI-less chirps I can always surprise myself. And I bet there's even more that today's detectors can't reach that are just waiting for the next wave of tech to be found!

This park is pounded bad too, but also covers half a square mile or so. Even still everything left is so deep it barely registers so I always go for the deep, VDI-less chirps

You have to be willing to go where others won't. Hit the fringes of the park and a little into the woodline. Swing slow to give your machine a chance to react to the deep targets.

I was thinking the same thing! I tried to dig out under my plug and find the beads but none surfaced which leads me to believe they were wood and disentegrated over time.

Bugeater Metal Detecting I’m swinging a Whites MXT. I actually have found some old coins in a basement of a old bank building that I was allowed to detect. It had a dirt floor and I really didn’t even need a metal detector. Just kind of sifted through the dirt. I’m not really experienced only been out a few times so far. Really need some tips on getting permission and places to detect

We love the wheaties ! The religious items were great too! And of course your cant beat silver! Mercs are one of my favorite coins to find!

That first old coin will come quick! Old county atlases are a great resource for finding long lost farms, churches, and schools that are just farm fields now. Those sites will certainly have all sorts of old stuff and tilled fields bring a lot of targets to the surface so most of them are easy to hear

Sadly, everywhere in the UK, we need permission. Land that is Council owned is an absolute no chance as they all have a blanket ban on detecting. Most farmers have a 'no detecting' clause in tennants contracts (or already have given permission to someone else) and private land is also most likely a no-go (If anyone UK based knows different, please comment)

You are 100% correct. Nearly every square inch of the UK is owned by someone, and due to the actions of a minority, landowners treat detectorists like lepers.

Sorry to hear that, I never have had any issues though I always double check for signs or ordinances before going out to courthouses or parks. In Omaha we can buy a cheap permit that covers all public land

the cross you found and the three point medallion are together which will be a rosary the needs will be there also if made out of glass or metal.

Just know metal detecting is allowed in state parks. The Ohio Revised Code came handy when I had a park ranger pull up on me, I feared he was going take my equipment. Until I showed him the Ohio Revised Code

Are you also in the midwest? I've heard that's really common on the east coast but out in Nebraska it's all fair game aside from one odd town that has a ban on metal detector use in general.

Looking at a rosary and the whole you’ll find beads that you’re probably not gonna find those on your metal detector you need to come out and pan it or possibly run it through a screen

I was there on a Saturday, but things are a little more laissez faire with public land in the midwest. I've hunted a few courthouses with no problems, though I'm very meticulous about leaving the lawn the way I found it.

Some states have antiquity laws, it's illegal to metal detect in parks and on land deemed to be historic sites.

In the midwest parks, courthouses, public lakes, etc. are fair game unless an ordinance is posted. Laws are more tied to state historical locations like Gettysburg, or in my area the Fort Atkinson state park.

@@BugeaterMetalDetecting ... Not in Iowa. Some parks only allow beach areas during certain times of the day and certain times of the year. The Antiquities Act of 1906 and The Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 are federal laws that were created to protect history and make it illegal in almost all cases to metal detect on federal land. State laws vary from state to state; however, those allowing metal detecting on state property require a permit.

Only issue I would see you having detecting would be digging up a yard such as that court house dig. Might be OK to detect it but they might frown on the size of hole even if filled in. That's a issue in Omaha with detecting in the parks too many A$$hats digging to China an leaving that crater for someone to trip in. Grrrrrr rumor is there going to revoke permits an getting them due to this issue by lazy folks. Guess will see... Time to take the Simplex+ out to a few places to get used to it now.

I've found that if I show respect for the public lawns like at parks or courthouses (assuming no signs or ordinances posted against detecting) no one bothers me. If Omaha tries to outlaw detecting the parks you better believe I will show up to contest it. But myself and a lot of people I know have encountered their fair share of craters and bad plugs in the parks, the only thing we can do is fix it the best we can

Yup, learned after the fact that they were separately punched so there's a lot of variation in position and rotation

That Mercury dime is in mint state, due to the full split bands. The mintmark is just the way that they did them that year. But, your find may be worth $28-63 or more depending on how it would grade. Take it to someone who might give you an honest opinion. Woohoo!!

The key is to check jurisdiction before hunting any park (or courthouse, in my area most of them double as public parks). If there's no jurisdiction disallowing metal detecting or signs posted then it's fair game on public property. If someone were to question me I would cite the jurisdiction, even if cops are called I'm still in the right. I have had to explain to people that if they don't want me or others metal detecting they would need to pass legislation and post signage because it is public land that is maintained by my tax dollars and that I as a citizen are free to use unless there's jurisdiction against it.

Yeah the main reason I stopped detecting here in NY is because I was constantly getting hassled by people and it was very hard to get permission to hunt private property...I see lots of people on KZread hunting private yards but I never had much luck with asking permission...I love this hobby but my spirit was shot down and most times I went home after driving around aimless looking for places to detect..I don't understand why some people dislike our hobby

I run into that a lot in my area as well, there's a lot of people out there who are really offended by detecting in general. I have had a lot of days where no matter how many doors I knock I can't get a permission and sometimes it's even ended with a landowner resorting to violence or neighbors who physically saw me ask for and be granted permission calling law enforcement to accuse me of trespassing and vandalism anyway. With the public places in my area if people criticize or try to stop me from doing my hobby I can wave my permit or the laws of the area in their face and tell them to leave me alone because they're in the wrong to harass me.

As for permissions though, have you thought about asking permission for colonial era farms out in the country? I hunted one while I was in NJ a year ago and did extremely well in a field backed up to a 1723 house. I find that the chances of getting permission go up significantly in more conservative areas such as out in the country where people are more trusting of others and take interest in the area's history, whereas the big cities can be extremely tough at times for permissions because people are more rude and a good number of them have no interest in or hate the idea of the area's history.

I'm about 60 miles north of NYC in Putnam county which is definitely loaded with history..There is lots of old farms and old houses dating back to the early 1800s. I'm not gonna say I never get permission and I have found some good old coins and relics but most of the time I feel people frown at me when they see me..I've had people stop me in a park and say I'm not allowed to detect there and get angry...And most homeowners say they would rather not have anyone on their property..I'd say it's 2 out of 3 times i get a NO.. It's discouraging..

The Crucifix is where you begin praying the Rosary by making the Sign Of The Cross and then pray The Apostles Creed. The second piece you found is in the 14th position when praying the Rosary and is when you recite the Hail Holy Queen prayer. I realize this video is 3 years old, but I would offer a word of advice and caution. Those two pieces seem to have been discovered off the beaten path so to speak. Since they once had been on someone's personal Rosary Beads, they were left where they were for a reason. It is always best, as well as respectful, to replace items of that nature where you found them; they were never meant to be "found and picked up" by a stranger for any reason. You have no way of knowing what may, or may not, be attached to such things. Trust me on this. The St. Christoper/ St. Joseph medal goes on that sterling silver chain. That legitimately fell off someone's neck. ~ APRIL LIPKE

Not at all, I also know I'm not a door to door salesman either. I just try and go straight to the point of my hobby and why I'm there, if there's research involved I always bring a copy of my notes to offer them to learn more about the land.

No, if there are no ordinances against metal detecting city and county property is fair game. State and national parks tend to have more limitations.

the grass is not damaged. sprouts after a few days. Just cover your hole perfect.

When you find things like rosaries and other religious relics, you really should leave them in the ground. People would put those there especially in their yards, as a blessing or good luck. I don't think they should be removed or owned by anyone.
